Expression of glutamine/glutamic acid-rich proteins in rat submandibular glands.

The expression of GRP transcripts was found to be highly specific to the rat submandibular gland. GRP cross-reactive species were detected in the saliva of both inbred and outbred rat strains. There was no evidence of GRP transcripts in RNA prepared from bovine, ovine, porcine or murine submandibular glands. Thus the GRPs differ from the family of PRPs that are expressed in several species. The restriction of GRP expression to the rat suggests a relatively recent origin for a functional GRP gene, presumably after rat-mouse divergence. The ontogeny of the relative steady-state levels of GRP tra

PP037. Family history of cardiovascular disease and maternal vascular function during early pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Women with a family history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have an increased risk of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. Pregnancy is associated with increased physical demands on the cardiovascular system and hemodynamic changes. Cardiac output increases by about 40-50%, blood volume by 10-20% and vascular resistance decreases. OBJECTIVES: Our hypotheses was that women with a family history of CVD fail to have an adequate cardiovascular adaptation during pregnancy. METHODS: Fifty healthy women with singleton viable pregnancies were included in the study who were recorded

Brain MRI Findings of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis With a Heterozygous PRF1 Gene Mutation Masquerading As CLIPPERS: A Case Report.

Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a rare and potentially life-threatening genetic condition characterized by unsuppressed immune activation and hypercytokinemia. Chronic Lymphocytic Inflammation with Pontine Perivascular Enhancement Responsive to Steroids (CLIPPERS) is a central nervous system inflammatory disorder characterized by punctate and curvilinear gadolinium-enhancing lesions in the brainstem, cerebellum, and spinal cord, which responds well to corticosteroid treatment. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis has been known to mimic CLIPPERS on neuroimaging, and patients previ

Housing Interventions and the Chronic and Acute Risks of Family Homelessness: Experimental Evidence for Education.

This study considers risk associated with family homelessness for school functioning and experimental evidence on the effects of different housing interventions over time. Students in homeless families (N = 172; Mage  = 7.31; SD = 4.15) were randomized to housing interventions that focus on acute risks (community-based rapid rehousing), chronic risks (permanent subsidy), or usual care (UC). A matched group of low-income, housed students served as an additional reference for effects on attendance, school mobility, and reading and math achievement across 4 years. Findings partially support the c

Discussing and managing hematologic germ line variants.

With the introduction of genomic technologies, more hereditary cancer syndromes with hematologic malignancies are being described. Up to 10% of hematologic malignancies in children and adults may be the result of an underlying inherited genetic risk. Managing these patients with hereditary hematologic malignancies, including familial leukemia, remains a clinical challenge because there is little information about these relatively rare disorders. This article covers some of the issues related to the diagnosis and interpretation of variants associated with hereditary hematologic malignancies, in

Parents' Perceived Discrimination and Adolescent Adjustment in Chinese American Families: Mediating Family Processes.

Parental discriminatory experiences can have significant implications for adolescent adjustment. This study examined family processes linking parental perceived discrimination to adolescent depressive symptoms and delinquent behaviors by using the family stress model and incorporating family systems theory. Participants were 444 Chinese American adolescents (Mage.wave1  = 13.03) and their parents residing in Northern California. Testing of actor-partner interdependent models showed a significant indirect effect from earlier paternal (but not maternal) perceived discrimination to later adolesce

Leukoencephalopathy, cerebral calcifications and cysts: a family study.

We present a clinical, neuro-radiological and genetic study on a family with members suffering from an autosomal dominantly inherited syndrome characterised by epilepsy, cerebral calcifications and cysts, bone abnormalities; progressive neuro-cognitive deterioration and paranasal sinusitis. This syndrome shares several features with leukoencephalopathy with calcifications and cysts also called Labrune syndrome and the condition of cerebroretinal microangiopathy with calcifications and cysts (CRMCC; Coats plus syndrome). Genetic studies in this family did not reveal mutations in the CTC1 gene d

Risk factors associated with head louse infestation in Korea.

Head louse infestation (HLI) is one of the most frequently occurring parasitic diseases in children. This study was conducted to investigate the socioeconomic and personal factors influencing HLI in the Republic of Korea. A total of 2,210 questionnaires about various factors related to HLI were obtained from children in 17 primary schools throughout the country. The rate of HLI was significantly lower in children who lived together with mother or in a family where both parents worked. In addition, HLI was lower in children whose fathers or mothers were public officers or teachers. However, HLI

Familial pancreatic cancer in Italy. Risk assessment, screening programs and clinical approach: a position paper from the Italian Registry.

In Italy, pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of tumor related death with about 7000 new cases per year and a mortality rate of 95%. In a recent prospective epidemiological study on the Italian population, a family history was found in about 10% of patients suffering from a ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas (PDAC). A position paper from the Italian Registry for Familial Pancreatic Cancer was made to manage these high-risk individuals. Even though in the majority of high-risk individuals a genetic test to identify familial predisposition is not available, a screening protocol seems

ADAM-15 disintegrin-like domain structure and function.

The ADAM (a disintegrin-like and metalloproteinase) proteins are a family of transmembrane cell-surface proteins with important functions in adhesion and proteolytic processing in all animals. Human ADAM-15 is the only member of the ADAM family with the integrin binding motif Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) in its disintegrin-like domain. This motif is also found in most snake venom disintegrins and other disintegrin-like proteins. This unique RGD motif within ADAM-15 serves as an integrin ligand binding site, through which it plays a pivotal role in interacting with integrin receptors, a large family of he

Genetics: what's it got to do with family health care?

Genetics is an important contributory factor in many medical conditions. Having an understanding of the genetic basis of diseases can therefore be helpful in identifying and supporting people who have, or are at risk of having, a genetic condition. Most of the current practical applications relate to conditions which are known to have a definite mode of inheritance (for instance cystic fibrosis or familial hypercholesterolaemia) or which are due to chromosomal anomalies (such as Down syndrome). Current research projects are attempting to identify and understand the genetic factors associated w

Microsatellite instability and immunohistochemical analysis of MLH1 and MSH2 in normal endometrium, endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer from a hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer patient.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC)-related endometrial cancer is associated with mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes. However, chronological changes of these genes in the endometrium have not been studied in women from HNPCC families. Tissue samples of normal endometrium, endometrial hyperplasia without atypia and endometrial cancer were collected at different times from a 41-year-old Japanese woman with a family history of HNPCC. Combined microsatellite instability (MSI) and immunohistochemical analysis of MLH1 and MSH2 predicted the presence of a mutation in MSH2 when she h

Childhood behavioural disturbance in a community sample in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates.

The prevalence of behavioural and emotional problems was evaluated among 620 United Arab Emirates nationals aged 6-18 years using the Rutter Parent Questionnaire. Of these children, 11.8% scores above the cut-off point indicating behavioural disturbance. The prevalence of conduct problems was greater among boys, while emotional problems were more common among girls. Certain unspecified chronic life difficulties, parental distress in relation to their children, family history of psychiatric illness and alcohol or drug use in a family member were associated with behavioural disturbance, but no s

Neuropathology of prion diseases.

Prion diseases include sporadic forms such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), familial forms (familial CJD), fatal familial insomnia, Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease, and acquired forms (i.e., kuru, iatrogenic CJD). The most frequent of the latter include acquired forms secondary to injections of human cadaveric pituitary-derived growth hormone and the new variant of CJD--probably related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The communal lesions are neuronal loss, spongiosis and gliosis and, inconstantly, the presence of amyloid plaques and different kinds of small deposits immunolabel

The T-C(8356) mitochondrial DNA mutation in a Japanese family.

A rare point mutation at nucleotide position 8356 in the transfer RNA gene in mitochondrial DNA was found in a Japanese family. Our proband had migraine and dementia associated with lactic acidosis in addition to myoclonic epilepsy with ataxia and ragged-red fibres in a muscle biopsy specimen consistent with the clinical characteristics of myoclonic epilepsy with ragged-red fibres (MERRF). His mother, who had the same point mutation, also had migraine but without myoclonus or ataxia. His aunt, who had the same point mutation and migraine, developed diabetes mellitus, encephalomyopathy and seve

Homozygous factor X deficiency associated with familial hypercholesterolemia, mitral valve prolapse, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

The family investigated showed the presence of multiple genetic disorders among their members. The presumable defective genes were related to coagulation factor X, familial hypercholesterolemia, mitral valve prolapse, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The parents were offspring of two siblings, and their children comprised a nonidentical twin. While the proband demonstrated factor X deficiency, obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and primary hypercholesterolemia, her parents and her elder sister were considered heterozygous for factor X. In addition, her mother had elevated plasma choleste

X-linked spinomuscular atrophy: a kindred with associated abnormal androgen receptor binding.

We studied androgen receptor function in cultured scrotal skin fibroblasts from eight subjects with X-linked spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) (Kennedy's syndrome) from four families. The neuromuscular and endocrine features were similar in all patients. High-affinity dihydrotestosterone binding (Bmax) was decreased in three patients from one family (average, 11.1 fmol/mg) similar to values in subjects with androgen resistance syndromes. Bmax was normal in five SBMA patients from three other families (average, 26.0 fmol/mg). This finding provides direct evidence for abnormal androgen r
