Model-Based Dynamic Control Allocation in a Hybrid Neuroprosthesis.

A hybrid neuroprosthesis that combines human muscle power, elicited through functional electrical stimulation (FES), with a powered orthosis may be advantageous over a sole FES or a powered exoskeleton-based rehabilitation system. The hybrid system can conceivably overcome torque reduction due to FES-induced muscle fatigue by complementarily using torque from the powered exoskeleton. The second advantage of the hybrid system is that the use of human muscle power can supplement the powered exoskeleton's power (motor torque) requirements; thus, potentially reducing the size and weight of a walki…

A population-based study of the impact of specific symptoms on quality of life in women with breast cancer 1 year after diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Whereas the role of specific symptoms, such as pain and fatigue, for quality of life (QOL) is unquestioned, their relative importance for long-lasting impairments in QOL in cancer patients has rarely been assessed quantitatively. The authors, therefore, aimed to identify symptoms most predictive of limitations to function and overall QOL in women with breast cancer after completion of primary therapy. METHODS: The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire QLQ-C30 and the breast-cancer-specific module QLQ-BR23 were used to measure QOL in a population-…

Stressed out: the skeletal muscle ryanodine receptor as a target of stress.

Over the past century, understanding the mechanisms underlying muscle fatigue and weakness has been the focus of much investigation. However, the dominant theory in the field, that lactic acidosis causes muscle fatigue, is unlikely to tell the whole story. Recently, dysregulation of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca(2+) release has been associated with impaired muscle function induced by a wide range of stressors, from dystrophy to heart failure to muscle fatigue. Here, we address current understandings of the altered regulation of SR Ca(2+) release during chronic stress, focusing on the role of …

Effect of theophylline on diaphragmatic muscle function.

Recent investigations have shown that theophylline improves diaphragmatic contractility of the respiratory muscles in isolated muscle preparations in animals and in normal human subjects. It has also been demonstrated that theophylline can reverse diaphragmatic fatigue and prevent fatigue of the diaphragm when given prophylactically. These effects have also been demonstrated in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, all of whom retained CO2 (PaCO2 53 +/- 3 mm Hg) and had hypoxia (PaO2 57 +/- 8 mm Hg). Theophylline, which increases respiratory muscle strength and delays the…

[Work psychopathology].

Work psychopathology concept is outlined, restricted, however, to different disorders and conflicts whose actual cause is to be found in the intrinsic mechanism of work-related activity. Environment- and life condition-related causes are disregarded. Nervous fatigue neurasthenoid syndrome is understood as a result of a dephasing between CNS neurophysiological timing and work rhythms. The author stresses that taking productivity as a parameter for nervous fatigue measurement--which substituted for the former muscular fatigue criterion in industry--is quite erroneous an opinion. Ergonomy is to b…

Isokinetic strength and endurance of the knee extensors and flexors in trans-tibial amputees.

Significant levels of muscular fatigue alter the co-ordination patterns and the ability to accomplish proper daily functions, especially in patients with initial low levels of strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the strength and endurance of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles in trans-tibial amputees. Concentric strength and endurance of the thigh muscles were measured bilaterally by an isokinetic dynamometer. The measured variables were torque and angle. For the endurance test, a fatigue index was calculated. Peak torque for extension and flexion was significantly higher in …

Quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties of a linoleic acid-modified, low-modulus bone cement for spinal applications.

BACKGROUND: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is extensively used in spinal procedures such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, while its use in percutaneous cement discoplasty (PCD) is not yet widely spread. A main issue for both application sites, vertebra and disc, is the mismatch in stiffness between cement and bone, potentially resulting in adjacent vertebral fractures and adjacent segment disease. Tailoring the cement modulus using additives is hence an interesting strategy. However, there is a lack of data on the tensile and tension-compression fatigue properties of these cements…

Comparison of the Levels of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Released in the Vastus Lateralis Muscle of Patients with Fibromyalgia and Healthy Controls during Contractions of the Quadriceps Muscle--A Microdialysis Study.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia is associated with central hyperexcitability, but it is suggested that peripheral input is important to maintain central hyperexcitability. The primary aim was to investigate the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines released in the vastus lateralis muscle during repetitive dynamic contractions of the quadriceps muscle in patients with fibromyalgia and healthy controls. Secondarily, to investigate if the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were correlated with pain or fatigue during these repetitive dynamic contractions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 32 women with fibromyalgia…

Hybrid Robotic and Electrical Stimulation Assistance Can Enhance Performance and Reduce Mental Demand.

Combining functional electrical stimulation (FES) and robotics may enhance recovery after stroke, by providing neural feedback with the former while improving quality of motion and minimizing muscular fatigue with the latter. Here, we explored whether and how FES, robot assistance and their combination, affect users' performance, effort, fatigue and user experience. 15 healthy participants performed a wrist flexion/extension tracking task with FES and/or robotic assistance. Tracking performance improved during the hybrid FES-robot and the robot-only assistance conditions in comparison to no as…

Is SARS-CoV-2 the only cause of long-COVID?

Around 10% of adults infected with SARS-CoV-2 that survive a first episode of COVID-19 appear to experience long-term clinical manifestations. The signs and symptoms of this post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) include fatigue, dyspnea, joint pain, myalgia, chest pain, cough, anosmia, dysgeusia, headache, depression, anxiety, memory loss, concentration difficulties, and insomnia. These sequelae remind the constellation of clinical manifestations previously recognized as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). This condition has been described following distinct infecti…
