Grip strength, working memory, and emotion perception in middle-aged males.

This study examined the association between grip strength and emotional working memory in middle-aged adults. Seventy-six males aged 40-60years (mean=48.5years, SD=5.4) participated in this cross-sectional study. They completed a muscular fitness assessment using a maximum grip strength test and emotional n-back tasks under two emotion conditions (fearful and neutral facial pictures) and two working memory loads (1-back and 2-back tasks). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that greater muscular fitness was associated with superior working memory performance in the fearful condition in

COVID-19 Mass Vaccination and Flu Season: Concern for Decreased Public Health Measures and Worsening the Influenza Situation.

Reports show that other ordinary childhood infections like measles or influenza are likely to reemerge. The re-emergence of infectious diseases may happen due to the direct impact of the pandemic on the community because of decreased access to health and medical services, interrupted transport systems, weaknesses in the supply chain, flight restrictions, closings of the border, and international trade problems. The most prevalent cause (60.9%) for low vaccine uptake and coverage during the current pandemic was fear of exposure to the COVID-19 virus outside the home. The expectation and hope th

Cholinergic Modulation of Disorder-Relevant Neural Circuits in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder is associated with hyperactivity in the amygdala-prefrontal networks, and normalization of this aberrant function is thought to be critical for successful treatment. Preclinical evidence implicates cholinergic neurotransmission in the function of these systems and suggests that cholinergic modulation may have anxiolytic effects. However, the effects of cholinergic modulators on the function of anxiety-related networks in humans have not been investigated. METHODS: We administered a novel α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-negative allosteric modulator

'On the different Species of Phobia' and 'On the different Species of Mania' (1786): from popular furies to mental disorders in America.

Benjamin Rush's twin 1786 letters on the different species of phobia and mania sit at an extended historical juncture at which an early modern quasi-medical troping of mental disorder in American social commentary sobered up to mental medicine. The letters' satirical drive hinged on a perennial problem still occupying George Beard almost a century onward: which idiosyncratic trepidation or ill-grounded idea warranted the nomination of national and epochal ill? Rush's mania letter exemplified an established genre identifying popular and especially political crazes; at the same time, it foreshad

Post-herpetic neuralgia - a review of current management and future directions.

Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is common and treatment is often suboptimal with less than half of patients achieving adequate 50% pain relief. As an area of unmet clinical need and as an archetype of neuropathic pain, it deserves the attention of clinicians and researchers. Areas covered: This review summarises the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors and clinical features of varicella infection. It describes the current and possible future management strategies for preventing varicella infection and reactivation and for treating PHN. Expert opinion: A highly successful Varicella Zoster

Mechanisms of visual threat detection in specific phobia.

People with anxiety or stress-related disorders attend differently to threat-relevant compared with non-threat stimuli, yet the temporal mechanisms of differential allocation of attention are not well understood. We investigated two independent mechanisms of temporal processing of visual threat by comparing spider-phobic and non-fearful participants using a rapid serial visual presentation task. Consistent with prior literature, spider phobics, but not non-fearful controls, displayed threat-specific facilitated detection of spider stimuli relative to negative stimuli and neutral stimuli. Miniopen coracohumeral ligament release and manipulation for idiopathic frozen shoulder.

In the management of idiopathic frozen shoulder, manipulation under anaesthesia is known to have serious potential complications including fractures and intra-articular injuries. Arthroscopy is a safer treatment modality but requires special instruments, experience, and involves added cost. The aim of this work was to study the use of miniopen Coracohumeral ligament release and manipulation of the shoulder as a safe and simple method of treating idiopathic frozen shoulder that could be performed as a quick procedure under short duration anaesthesia obtaining a significant improvement of should

Treatment-seeking for social anxiety disorder in a general outpatient psychiatry setting.

Many individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) seek treatment principally for another psychiatric disorder, but when directly asked, a majority of these individuals also desire treatment for SAD. Several reasons may exist for why individuals with SAD do not seek treatment for it, such as the severity or functional impairment related to SAD. The aim of the current study was to examine factors related to SAD severity, impairment, and comorbidity, to gain a better understanding of what factors may be related to treatment-seeking for SAD. In 819 psychiatric outpatients with SAD, initial resul

Radiation: facts, fallacies and phobias.

There is frequent debate in the media and the scientific published reports about the use of radiation for diagnosis and treatment, the benefits and risks of the nuclear industry, uranium mining and the storage of radioactive wastes. Driving this debate is increasing concern about reliance on fossil fuels for power generation for which alternatives are required. Unfortunately, there is generally a poor understanding of the relevant basic sciences compounded by widespread irrational fear of irradiation (radiation phobia). Radioactivity, with special reference to uranium and plutonium is simply d

An epidemiologic perspective on social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is among the most common mental disorders on a lifetime basis, ranging from 12% to 14%. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, categorizes SAD as either generalized (fear/avoidance of multiple social situations) or nongeneralized (fearing only a limited number of social situations), with some overlap between the 2 subtypes. Generalized SAD is associated with more comorbid mental disorders, greater functional impairment, and lower health-related quality of life. Half of SAD patients have onset by age 13 years and 90% by age 23 ye

[Contagiousness of yellow fever in the Netherlands between 1820 and 1825. Medical and sanitary aspects of a polymorphic disease].

Shortly after 1800, the question of the contagiousness of yellow fever was quite a topic. In the Netherlands, as was the case in France, the government feared the introduction of contagious diseases, especially of the yellow fever. This growing fear was prompted by the increasing number of yellow fever appearances in the mediterranean ports of France, Spain and Italy, as well as in some French Atlantic ports. In 1821, Thomassen ai Thuessink (a leading expert on epidemic diseases in the Netherlands), Bernard and Van Stipriaan Luïscius were invited by the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, Literat

Functional disconnectivity of the medial temporal lobe in Asperger's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions that may be caused by abnormal connectivity between brain regions constituting neurocognitive networks for specific aspects of social cognition. METHODS: We used three-way multidimensional scaling of regionally parcellated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data to explore the hypothesis of abnormal functional connectivity in people with ASD. Thirteen high-functioning individuals with Asperger's syndrome and 13 healthy volunteers were scanned during incidental processing of fearful facial expressions. R

Face to face: visual scanpath evidence for abnormal processing of facial expressions in social phobia.

Cognitive models of social phobia propose that cognitive biases and fears regarding negative evaluation by others result in preferential attention to interpersonal sources of threat. These fears may account for the hypervigilance and avoidance of eye contact commonly reported by clinicians. This study provides the first objective examination of threat-related processing in social phobia. It was predicted that hyperscanning (hypervigilance) and eye avoidance would be most apparent in social phobia for overt expressions of threat. An infrared corneal reflection technique was used to record visua

Bioterriorism: from threat to reality.

The fears and predictions of attacks with biological weapons, which were increasing at the close of the twentieth century, were transformed into reality not long after September 11, 2001, when several anthrax-laden letters were sent through the U.S. postal system. The attack challenged our medical preparedness and scientific understanding of the epidemiology of biothreat agents. It is fortunate that this was not a massive aerosol release that could have exposed hundreds of thousands. Rapid diagnoses and medical treatments limited casualties and increased survival rates, but tragically some ind

Critical conditions for hyperventilation responses. The role of autonomic response propositions during emotional imagery.

Hyperventilation is often conceived of as part of a fight-or-flight response, triggered by situations with high arousal and negative valence. However, a previous study using emotional imagery found hyperventilation responses during imagery of high-arousal scenes regardless of their valence. Those imagery scripts contained suggestions of autonomic activity, which may have partly induced or enhanced the hyperventilatory responsivity. The present study used four emotional scripts--depicting relaxing, fearful, depressive, and pleasant situations--without suggestions of autonomic or respiratory res

[Diagnosis and treatment of the phobia due to treatment with air using nasal continuous pressure].

INTRODUCTION: The obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by destructured sleep due to repeated episodes of obstruction of the superior respiratory tract during sleep. Treatment by nasal continuous positive airway pressure (n-CPAP) using air is one of the most common forms of treatment of OSAS, although some patients cannot tolerate it. One of the causes of intolerance of n-CPAP is the phobic reaction of some patients. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to show that phobia is one of the causes of n-CPAP not being accepted by OSAS patients and demonstrates the efficacy

Factors influencing drinking behavior in alcoholic panickers and non-panickers.

Male alcoholics who (a) experienced panic attacks prior to abusing alcohol, (b) experienced panic attacks subsequent to abusing alcohol, and (c) had not experienced panic attacks were compared on three sets of measures: the Panic Attack Questionnaire, the Restrained Drinking Scale, and the Inventory of Drinking Situations. The results showed that two groups of Ss who experienced panic attacks were more likely than non-panickers to use drugs other than alcohol, began drinking at an earlier age, had a greater proportion of parents with panic and alcohol related problems, had higher drinking rest

Co-occurrence of rabies and organophosphorus insecticide poisoning: A rare case of a diagnostic dilemma in forensic pathology.

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable zoonotic viral infection, but organophosphorus insecticide poisoning continues to be a toxicological emergency in India. An unusual co-occurrence is described in a 31-year old man who, following a puppy bite, ingested insecticide due to fear of rabies. Autopsy confirmed both poisoning and rabies presenting a rare diagnostic dilemma in forensic pathology.
