Demonstrations of AIDS-associated malignancies and infections at FDG PET-CT.

HIV infection results in profound alterations of immunologic function that render the patient severely immunocompromised, and susceptible to malignancies and opportunistic infections. Three AIDS-defining malignancies include Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and invasive cervical cancer. In AIDS patients, KS is often aggressive and multifocal, with visceral involvement and widespread cutaneous and nodal spread; NHL is always high grade and often widely disseminated at the time of diagnosis with frequent involvement of extranodal sites; cervical cancer is invasive and has grea

18F-FDG PET of locally invasive breast cancer and association of estrogen receptor status with standardized uptake value: microarray and immunohistochemical analysis.

UNLABELLED: PET imaging is useful for evaluating locally advanced primary breast cancer. Expression of specific molecular markers in these cancers, such as estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2 status, has direct prognostic and therapeutic implications in patient management. This study aimed to determine whether a relationship exists between tumor glucose use and important molecular markers in invasive breast cancer. For our purposes, tumor glucose use is quantified by the PET-derived parameter maximum standardized uptake value (SUV). METHODS: Breast tumors from 36 pati

Whole-body 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography images before and after chemotherapy for Kaposi sarcoma and highly active antiretrovirus therapy.

Kaposi sarcoma is an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related disease that mainly involves the skin, gastrointestinal gut, and lungs. Whole-body 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography and computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) scanning is useful for simultaneous detection of multiple lesions of Kaposi sarcoma. We present a 67-year-old man with a history of infection with human immunodeficiency virus who presented with numerous cutaneous lesions. FDG-PET/CT images showed lesions in the skin, lung, and lymph nodes. The gastrointestinal lesions were detected using gastric fiberscopy (GF)

Modalities for evaluating chemotherapeutic efficacy and survival time in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer: comparison between FDG-PET, CT, and serum tumor markers.

OBJECTIVE: It has recently been reported that (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is useful for estimation of the chemotherapy effect. Thus, we examined the value of FDG-PET in assessing the efficacy of chemotherapy in advanced pancreatic cancer, and compared this modality with tumor markers (TMs) and CT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with unresectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma were enrolled. All patients received chemotherapy with gemcitabine and S-1, an oral derivative of 5-fluorouracil, and underwent FDG-PET, CT, and serological examination for TMs bef

The role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in evaluation of early response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced breast cancer.

We evaluated the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT for the assessment of response after two cycles of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) for breast cancer. Twenty-three women with locally advanced breast cancer were included in this study. Early response to NACT was evaluated after two cycles using clinical examination, CT, and 18F-FDG PET/CT. Final histopathology following surgery after six cycles of NACT served as reference. Baseline PET/CT demonstrated a total of 26 lesions in 23 patients. The size of the primary tumor ranged from 1.90 cm to 11.60 cm, and the maximum value of the standardized uptake val

(18)F-FDG PET/CT for discrimination between tumor extension and blood thrombus in pancreatic adenocarcinoma associated with portal vein thrombosis.

Pancreatic cancer is a malignancy with an extremely poor prognosis. Less than 3 % of patients are alive 5 years after diagnosis. Pancreatic neoplasms represent a possible but uncommon etiology of portal venous invasion. It is important to differentiate the nature of the thrombus, if it is a bland thrombus or is a direct tumor extension. Intense uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) has been reported in portal vein tumor thrombus. We present a case of pancreatic adenocarcinoma and clinical findings of portal hypertension due to portal vein thrombosis. (18)F-FDG positron emission tomograp

Lambert-Eaton syndrome with large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung.

Lambert-Eaton syndrome (LES) is an immune-mediated disorder of the presynaptic neuromuscular junction due to the blocking effect of the voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) antibodies. Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the most common cause of LES. We report an unusual case of LES associated with large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the lung. In this case, clinical symptoms of LES predated the diagnosis of LCNEC by 6 years. After tumor resection, the patient experienced clinical and electrophysiological improvement. In addition, he had a decrease in VGCC antibody titer from 130 to 80
