Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss (ARHL), is a multifactorial disorder characterized by a gradual, bilateral sensorineural decline in hearing sensitivity, predominantly affecting high-frequency sounds. It is one of the most common chronic conditions in the aging population and represents a major public health concern due to its high prevalence and progressive nature. Presbycusis significantly impairs speech perception, especially in noisy environments, leading to communication difficulties, reduced social participation, increased risk of social isolation, and a decline in quality of lif

Development of a new vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) to replace the BCG vaccine has been hampered by the lack of a preclinical vaccine model that accurately reflects the genetic heterogeneity of the human population. We previously tested both Collaborative Cross (CC) and Diversity Outbred (DO) mice, which collectively reflect the genetic diversity of an outbred population, as models for preclinical vaccine testing. Using both CC and DO mice, we compared the ability of two different strategies to enhance BCG-mediated protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). BCG::ESX-1Mmar is genetical

The Internet of Things network is a prime target for attackers due to its vulnerabilities and the sensitive data it handles. Protecting these devices is critical, and an Intrusion Detection System serves as the first defence against breaches. While many intrusion classification methods exist, building low-complexity systems for IoT remains challenging. This paper introduces a novel method combining active feature selection and ensemble machine learning to address complexity issues for IDS in IoT. Specifically, a novel Cauchy-Gaussian genetic-arithmetic optimiser-driven variance-based active fe

BACKGROUND: Glycogen storage diseases are a group of inherited metabolic disorders that affect the body's ability to break down and/or store glycogen. Type IX glycogen storage disease is an inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of phosphorylase kinase, which leads to various symptoms. We report the first reported case in Syria of glycogen storage disease type IXc caused by a novel phosphorylase B kinase catalytic subunit gamma 2 gene mutation, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and genetic counseling.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-month-old Syrian male infant of Arab ethnicity present

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the upper and lower motor neurons. Several genetic risk factors have been identified in the past decade with a hexanucleotide repeat expansion in the C9orf72 gene being the most significant. However, the presence of C9orf72 repeat expansion has not been examined in the Transcaucasian region, therefore we aimed to analyse its frequency in Georgian patients with ALS.
METHODS: We included 64 self-reported Georgian patients with ALS from different parts of the country, fulfilling the Gol

OBJECTIVES: Genetics have been shown to have a substantial impact on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The ALS process involves defects in axonal transport and cytoskeletal dynamics. It has been identified that KIF1A, responsible for encoding a kinesin-3 motor protein that carries synaptic vesicles, is considered a genetic predisposing factor for ALS.
METHODS: The analysis of whole-exome sequencing data from 1,068 patients was conducted to examine the genetic link between ALS and KIF1A. For patients with KIF1A gene mutations and a family history, we extended the analysis to their families

Familial hypertriglyceridemia (F-HTG) is an autosomal disorder that causes severe elevation of serum triglyceride levels. It is caused by genetic alterations in LPL, APOC2, APOA5, LMF1, and GPIHBP1 genes. The mutation spectrum of F-HTG in Arabic populations is limited. Here, we report the genetic spectrum of six families of F-HTG of Arab ancestry in Oman. Methods: six Omani families affected with triglyceride levels >11.2 mmol/L were included in this study. Ampli-Seq sequencing of the selected gene panels was performed. Whole-exome sequencing and copy number variant analysis were also performe

Factor XI (FXI) deficiency is a rare inherited bleeding disorder that is highly prevalent in Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry but sporadically observed in most ethnic groups. It is heterogeneous both in clinical presentation and in genetic causality. Although a large spectrum of mutations associated with this disorder has been reported in several populations, genetic data of FXI deficiency in Tunisia are poorly described. The purpose of this study was to determine the molecular basis of FXI deficiency among Tunisian patients. Fourteen index cases from nine unrelated families with FXI deficiency, refe

BACKGROUND: Male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) has been implicated as a putative risk factor in severe COVID-19 based on high incidences of advanced AGA in male hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Research further suggests that androgen signalling, which plays a central role in AGA aetiology, promotes SARS-CoV-2 infection and is associated with severe COVID-19 symptoms in men.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to systematically investigate a potential association between AGA and COVID-19 both on an epidemiological and a genetic level in a large single-population cohort.
METHODS: We performed regression, geneti

Variation in skin pigmentation can be affected by both environmental factors and intrinsic factors such as age, gender, and genetic variation. Recent GWASs revealed that genetic variants of genes functionally related to a pigmentation pathway were associated with skin pigmentary traits. However, these GWASs focused on populations with European ancestry, and only a few studies have been performed on Asian populations, limiting our understanding of the genetic basis of skin pigmentary traits in Asians. To evaluate the genetic variants associated with facial pigmented spots, we conducted a GWAS a

BACKGROUND: The degree to which host genetic variation can modulate microbial communities in humans remains an open question. Here, we performed a genetic mapping study of the microbiome in two accessible upper airway sites, the nasopharynx and the nasal vestibule, during two seasons in 144 adult members of a founder population of European decent.
RESULTS: We estimated the relative abundances (RAs) of genus level bacteria from 16S rRNA gene sequences and examined associations with 148,653 genetic variants (linkage disequilibrium [LD] r 2 < 0.5) selected from among all common variants discover

Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811) is the most abundant and significant insect vector of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi in Central America, and particularly in Guatemala. Tr. cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, and successful disease control requires understanding the geographic distribution and degree of migration of vectors such as T. dimidiata that frequently re-infest houses within months following insecticide application. The population genetic structure of T. dimidiata collected from six villages in southern Guatemala was studied to gain insight into the migration patterns

The etiology and pathophysiology of Tourette Syndrome (TS) remain poorly understood. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that a complex genetic background and the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit are involved. The role of Lhx6 and Lhx8 in the development of the striatal interneurons, prompted us to investigate them as novel candidate genes for TS. We performed a comparative study of the expression of Lhx6 and Lhx8 and investigated genetic association with TS using two samples of trios (TSGeneSEE and German sample - 222 families). We show that Lhx6 and Lhx8 expression in the forebrain is

RNA viruses typically occur in genetically diverse populations due to their error-prone genome replication. Genetic diversity is thought to be important in allowing RNA viruses to explore sequence space, facilitating adaptation to changing environments and hosts. Some arboviruses that infect both a mosquito vector and a mammalian host are known to experience population bottlenecks in their vectors, which may constrain their genetic diversity and could potentially lead to extinction events via Muller's ratchet. To examine this potential challenge of bottlenecks for arbovirus perpetuation, we st
