The epileptology of Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome: Electroclinical findings in five patients with KMT2A pathogenic variants.

BACKGROUND: Wiedemann-Steiner Syndrome (WSTS) is a rare chromatinopathy caused by pathogenic variants in KMT2A. WSTS is characterized by neurodevelopmental disorders and distinct dysmorphic features. Epilepsy has been reported in only 33 individuals with WSTS, with only limited clinical details described. METHODS: We identified patients with pathogenic KMT2A variants and epilepsy, and performed thorough phenotyping. RESULTS: Five patients were identified, all of whom presented with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE). Epilepsy syndromes observed included Lennox-Gastaut syndrome

The Relationship between Social Support and Secondary Posttraumatic Growth among Health Care Providers Working with Trauma Victims-The Mediating Role of Cognitive Processing.

BACKGROUND: Individuals, who help trauma victims as part of their professional responsibilities, may experience positive effects of their work, occurring in the form of Secondary Posttraumatic Growth (SPTG). Its determinants include environmental factors such as social support, and individual characteristics, particularly cognitive processing of the trauma. The purpose of this study was to determine the associations between SPTG and social support and cognitive processing of trauma, also considered as a mediator, in a group of medical personnel exposed to secondary trauma. METHODS: The result

Factors associated with community acquired severe pneumonia among under five children in Dhaka, Bangladesh: A case control analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children globally with the majority of these deaths observed in resource-limited settings. Globally, the annual incidence of clinical pneumonia in under-five children is approximately 152 million, mostly in the low- and middle-income countries. Of these, 8.7% progressed to severe pneumonia requiring hospitalization. However, data to predict children at the greatest risk to develop severe pneumonia from pneumonia are limited. METHOD: Secondary data analysis was performed after extracting relevant data from a prospective cluster randomized

Early neurological development and nutritional status in Mexican socially deprived contexts.

Early childhood development (ECD) is a critical stage in the intergenerational process of human development. Targeted interventions depend on accurate and up-to-date ECD measurements. This paper presents estimates for the nutritional and neurodevelopmental status of socially marginalized children in Mexico. We performed a cross-sectional study based on data collected in 2019-2020 during home visits to 1,176 children aged 0-38 months across 24 highly marginalized locations in Oaxaca. We assessed nutritional status according to the World Health Organization 2006 child-growth standards and ECD st

Loeys-Dietz syndrome caused by 1q41 deletion including TGFB2 is associated with a neurodevelopmental phenotype.

Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a connective tissue disorder that commonly results in a dilated aorta, aneurysms, joint laxity, craniosynostosis, and soft skin that bruises easily. Neurodevelopmental abnormalities are uncommon in LDS. Two previous reports present a total of four patients with LDS due to pure 1q41 deletions involving TGFB2 (Gaspar et al., American Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, 2017, 173, 2289-2292; Lindsay et al., Nature Genetics, 2012, 44, 922-927). The current report describes an additional five patients with similar deletions. Seven of the nine patients present with some

Updates on eosinophilic disorders.

This review addresses changes and updates in eosinophilic disorders under the International Consensus Classification (ICC). The previous category of myeloid/lymphoid neoplasm with eosinophilia (M/LN-eo) and a specific gene rearrangement is changed to M/LN-eo with tyrosine kinase gene fusions to reflect the underlying genetic lesions. Two new members, M/LN-eo with ETV6::ABL1 fusion and M/LN-eo with various FLT3 fusions, have been added to the category; and M/LN-eo with PCM1::JAK2 and its genetic variants ETV6::JAK2 and BCR::JAK2 are recognized as a formal entity from their former provisional st

Socio-economic status and the double burden of malnutrition in Cambodia between 2000 and 2014: overweight mothers and stunted children.

OBJECTIVE: The Cambodian population has experienced an increase in the proportion of stunted children who have overweight mothers during a period of rapid social and economic growth. We aimed to identify socio-economic factors associated with this household-level double burden over time. DESIGN: We used data from four Cambodia Demographic and Health Surveys from 2000 to 2014 to study the impact of socio-economic status (SES) on the link between child stunting and overweight mothers in two periods 2000-2005 v. 2010-2014. We hypothesised that SES would be a primary factor associated with this p

Transplant-related trauma, personal growth and alcohol use outcomes in a cohort of patients receiving transplants for alcohol associated liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation (LT) is stressful experience which can cause psychological trauma but also positive growth. We examined the prevalence of transplant related post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in a cohort of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) LT recipients. We also examined whether PTG or PTSD symptoms were associated with post-LT alcohol use. METHODS: Cross sectional survey of 51 ALD LT recipients one-year post-LT assessed PTSD symptoms, PTG, stress, self-efficacy, social support, and alcohol use. RESULTS: 18% endorsed symptom

Prenatal and postnatal determinants of stunting at age 0-11 months: A cross-sectional study in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Childhood stunting remains the most challenging consequence of undernutrition because it is associated with suboptimal brain development and the subsequent increased risk of metabolic diseases and decreased earnings in adult life. The Sambas District in Indonesia has a high prevalence of stunting (28.4%), followed by underweight (25.5.%) and wasting (14.4%) among children, as well chronic energy deficiency (27%) and anemia (62%) among pregnant women. The present study sought to determine significant factors in childhood stunting with a focus on maternal and child nutrition and pren

Novel PIK3R1 mutation of SHORT syndrome: A case report with a 6-month follow up.

SHORT syndrome (short stature, hyperextensibility, ocular depression [deeply set eyes], Rieger anomaly and teething delay) is very rare, with a few cases reported in the literature. We report a case of SHORT syndrome with a novel PIK3R1 mutation (c.2008delT) and complicated with severe insulin resistance. Although no treatment guidelines are available to relieve insulin resistance in SHORT syndrome, our treatment plans, including lifestyle intervention combined with metformin and pioglitazone, were carried out for this patient. After the intervention, insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia in

Benefit of cochlear implantation in a patient with Myhre syndrome.

Myhre syndrome is a rare disorder characterised by short stature, skeletal anomalies, facial dysmorphism and hearing loss (HL), resulting from heterozygous mutations of the SMAD4 gene. We describe the benefits of cochlear implant (CI) in a patient with sensorineural HL carrying a mutation (NM_005359.6: c.1498A>G; p.lle500Val) within the SMAD4 gene, detected by whole-exome sequencing. The CI was inserted through the round window despite otospongiotic abnormalities. Pure-tone audiometry improved up to 20 dBHL. Speech perception in noise (Simplified Noise Reduction - SNR +10) increased from 0% pr

Antenatal Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation Is Associated with Improved Linear Growth and Reduced Risk of Stunting or Severe Stunting in South Asian Children Less than Two Years of Age: A Pooled Analysis from Seven Countries.

In South Asia, an estimated 38% of preschool-age children have stunted growth. We aimed to assess the effect of WHO-recommended antenatal iron, and folic acid (IFA) supplements on smaller than average birth size and stunting in South Asian children <2 years old. The sample was 96,512 mothers with their most recent birth within two years, from nationally representative surveys between 2005 and 2016 in seven South Asian countries. Primary outcomes were stunting [length-for-age Z-score (LAZ) < -2], severe stunting [length-for-age Z-score (LAZ) < -3], length-for-age Z score, and perceived smaller

Factors associated with concurrent wasting and stunting among children 6-59 months in Karamoja, Uganda.

Children with concurrent wasting and stunting (WaSt) and children with severe wasting have a similar risk of death. Existing evidence shows that wasting and stunting share similar causal pathways, but evidence on correlates of WaSt remains limited. Research on correlates of WaSt is needed to inform prevention strategies. We investigated the factors associated with WaSt in children 6-59 months in Karamoja Region, Uganda. We examined data for 33,054 children aged 6-59 months using June 2015 to July 2018 Food Security and Nutrition Assessment in Karamoja. We defined WaSt as being concurrently was

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes after Bevacizumab Treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity: A Meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate neurodevelopmental outcomes after intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) therapy in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) infants compared with those not exposed to IVB. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The primary concern regarding IVB treatment of ROP is the potential systemic side effects, especially the risk of causing severe neurodevelopmental impairment (sNDI). Results regarding neurodevelopmental outcomes after IVB therapy are conflicting. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis and searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for related publications from inception through March 12, 2020. Th

Three new patients with Steel syndrome and a Puerto Rican specific COL27A1 mutation.

Steel syndrome was initially described by H. H. Steel in 1993 in Puerto Rico, at which time he described the clinical findings required for diagnosis. The responsible gene, COL27A1, was identified in 2015 (Gonzaga-Jauregui et al., European Journal of Human Genetics, 2015;23:342-346). Eleven patients have previously been described with Steel syndrome and homozygous COL27A1 mutations, with eight having an apparent founder mutation, p.Gly697Arg. We describe three more patients identified at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children (Philadelphia, PA) diagnos
