Effectiveness of Rifabutin-Based Regimens in Treating Helicobacter pylori Infections.

Helicobacter pylori has been reported as a health problem worldwide, affecting a sizable portion of people. Peptic ulcers, gastric cancer, and various extra gastric conditions are associated with this bacterium. The rampant overprescribing of antibiotics has led to the emergence of H. pylori strains resistant to multiple antibiotics, causing a decline in the effectiveness of current treatments. Recently, there has been growing interest in researching alternative treatment options for H. pylori infections that do not respond to initial therapy. Rifabutin, a rifamycin derivative initially design

A personal reflection upon navigating into a senior academic role.

There are 22,795 University professors in the UK, where 6,340 are women and only 40 are Black women, whilst Asian women are a few more in number. This clearly demonstrates the uncommon narrative of the under-representation of Black minority ethnic (BME) academics in higher education (HE) which has been written about in detail. In contrast, it is rare to read reports on initiatives to successfully navigate senior academic posts. In this article, I will describe two initiatives that I have developed and organized to successfully navigate senior BME academic posts, which have impacted my journey.

Behavioral Change Factors and Retention in Web-Based Interventions for Informal Caregivers of People Living With Dementia: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Web-based interventions aimed at supporting informal caregivers of people living with dementia have the potential to improve caregivers' well-being and psychological health. However, few interventions are widely implemented for this population, and none of the prior reviews have systematically examined the use of behavior change techniques (BCTs), theories, and agents in web-based interventions for informal caregivers of people living with dementia. To better understand this implementation gap, we reviewed the literature to map behavioral factors (BCTs, theories, and agents) deploy

Immediate Mood Scaler: Tracking Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety Using a Novel Mobile Mood Scale.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders are dynamic disorders characterized by multimodal symptoms. Clinical assessment of symptoms is currently limited to relatively sparse, routine clinic visits, requiring retrospective recollection of symptoms present in the weeks preceding the visit. Novel advances in mobile tools now support ecological momentary assessment of mood, conducted frequently using mobile devices, outside the clinical setting. Such mood assessment may help circumvent problems associated with infrequent reporting and better characterize the dynamic presentation of mood symptoms, informing the

A rat model of ischaemic or dilated cardiomyopathy for investigating left ventricular repair surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaMs) service is a non-clinical, community-based Australian Government initiative aimed at increasing opportunities for recovery for people whose lives are severely affected by mental illness. Using a strengths-based recovery model, PHaMs caseworkers support and mentor people 'at risk of falling through the gaps' between state funded clinical treatment services and federally funded social services (such as supported housing, education and employment). While there is evidence that PHaMs realises its aim in metropolitan areas, little is kn

[Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): Drug and psychotherapeutique management, a literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) was first recognised in July 2013 in the DSM-5 after a long journey to identify its existence. It was not until 1983 that the US National Institute of Mental Health determined research criteria for the study of PMS. In 1994, the term "premenstrual dysphoric disorder" (PMDD) replaced this term in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic System Manual (DSM). It was listed in the section "Mood Disorder Not Otherwise Specified" and remained under consideration until the DSM-5, in which it appeared in the depressive disorders section. The legitimisation

Differential Factors Associated With the Presence of Persistent Symptoms in Individuals Diagnosed With Long COVID: Protocol for a Longitudinal Matched Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID (postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection) is a heterogeneous condition with persistent multisystem symptoms and substantial functional burden. Integrative longitudinal studies combining clinical phenotyping, lifestyle factors, and immunobiological markers are needed to clarify determinants of symptom persistence and inform risk stratification and targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify clinical, biological/immunological, and sociodemographic factors associated with Long COVID status by comparing individuals with persistent symptoms to matched r

Auxiliary Data as Surrogates for Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation Model Version 2 Risk Calculator Inputs: Design and Methodology of the Frauenherzen Study in Apparently Healthy Women Aged 40-69 Years.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate whether data collected from wearable devices, such as heart rate, step count, and sleep-related parameters, can reduce uncertainty in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction among apparently healthy women aged 40-69 years when blood pressure and blood lipid values required for the SCORE2 risk calculator are unavailable. A secondary objective was to identify wearable-derived features that contribute most to reducing uncertainty in CVD risk prediction. DESIGN: This was a monocentric, exploratory, cross-sectional observational study. Parti

Improving Breast Cancer Screening Coverage in Primary Healthcare: A Quality-Improvement Study (2023-2025).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Organized breast cancer screening reduces mortality; however, coverage within our primary healthcare (PHC) network was substantially below benchmarks. Barriers included limited awareness, fragmented workflows, suboptimal use of electronic systems, and constrained diagnostic capacity. Screening delivery relied on opportunistic identification rather than systematic recall, resulting in missed opportunities, limited performance monitoring, and prolonged diagnostic pathways. This study aimed to increase breast cancer screening coverage among eligible women aged 40-69 years atte

Perspectives of Turkish family physicians in Istanbul about e-cigarettes as smoking cessation aids: a cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: There has been limited research among family physicians (FPs) in Türkiye regarding smoking cessation and few studies have examined their perceptions of e-cigarettes as smoking cessation aids. This study aimed to examine the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of FPs in Istanbul about e-cigarettes and their potential role in smoking cessation. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed via email to a convenience sample of FPs in Istanbul. Participants were recruited from a list of family practice clinics provided by the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate and other so

Protocol for a Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial to Improve Physical Activity and Diet Quality in Survivors of Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood cancer have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but that risk may be reduced by healthy lifestyle behaviors. OBJECTIVE: Using a sequential multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART) design, this study aims to test different approaches to improve physical activity (PA) and diet quality among long-term survivors of cancer at increased risk of CVD over a 12-month period. The primary study outcomes are sedentary time and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scores. METHODS: Participants were recruited from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study cohort, with

Post-Critical Illness Dysphagia in the Intensive Care Unit (the Dysphagia-ICU Study): Protocol for a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Post-critical illness dysphagia occurs in about 10% to 62% of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Studies focusing on risk factors for dysphagia following endotracheal intubation are scarce and provide conflicting results. More research is required to determine the true prevalence of dysphagia, possible mechanisms, and risk factors. OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study are to determine (1) risk factors associated with post-critical illness dysphagia, (2) the prevalence of post-critical illness dysphagia, (3) outcomes of patients with post-critical illness dysphagia, and (4) the

A multimodal individualized long-term intervention to prevent functional decline after stroke (LAST-long): a single blinded randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the lack of evidence, the Stroke Action Plan for Europe recommends coordinated support after initial rehabilitation. This trial investigated if a coordinator-led multimodal intervention was superior to standard care in preventing dependency and functional decline after stroke. METHODS: In this single blinded randomised controlled multi-centre trial, patients were consecutively screened, included and randomised (1:1) by a web-based randomization system to an intervention or a control group at the out-patient clinics at four Norwegian hospitals three months post-stroke. Enhancing Distress Tolerance Skills in Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa Through the BALANCE Mobile App: Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is a severe psychiatric disorder with high morbidity and mortality, particularly among adolescents. Family-based treatment (FBT) is the leading evidence-based intervention for adolescent anorexia nervosa, involving parents in renourishment and behavior interruption. Despite its effectiveness, challenges in distress tolerance and emotion regulation during high-stress situations, such as mealtimes, contribute to suboptimal treatment outcomes, with only 35% to 50% of adolescents achieving full recovery. Enhancing distress tolerance skills during FBT may improve treatm

Effect of Prehabilitation in Lung Cancer Patients Undergoing Lobectomy: A Review.

Deaths from lung cancer are mostly caused by smoking. Cough, dyspnea, fatigue, weight loss, and Horner's syndrome are among the symptoms. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) are the two categories into which lung cancer may be divided. Because of its effectiveness and lower death rates, lobectomy is the primary line of therapy for benign and early-stage lung illnesses. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a routine treatment for thoracic surgery individuals who are at a high risk to improve functional ability, avoid postoperative deterioration, avoid postoperative deter

Socioeconomic factors predict successful supervised exercise therapy completion.

OBJECTIVE: Supervised exercise therapy (SET) for patients with intermittent claudication (IC) can lower the risk of progression to chronic limb-threatening ischemia and amputation, while preserving and restoring functional status. Despite supporting evidence, it remains underutilized, and among those who initiate programs, attrition rates are extremely high. We hypothesize that socioeconomic factors may represent significant barriers to SET completion. METHODS: Patients with IC referred to SET at a multi-hospital, single-institution health care system (2018-2022) from a prospectively maintain

A Web-Based Patient Empowerment to Medication Adherence Program for Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis: Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Living with a chronic illness such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) requires medications and therapies, as well as long-term follow-up with multidisciplinary clinical teams. Patient involvement in the shared decision-making process on medication regimens is an important element in promoting medication adherence. Literature review and needs assessment showed the viability of technology-based interventions to equip patients with knowledge about chronic illness and competencies to improve their adherence to medications. Thus, a web-based intervention was developed to empower patients livi

Telehealth-Based Psychoeducation for Caregivers: The Family Intervention in Recent-Onset Schizophrenia Treatment Study.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a lifelong illness that requires long-term treatment and caregiving. Family psychoeducation (FP) has been shown to lessen caregiver burden, improve caregiver functioning, and improve outcomes in patients. However, the impact of FP delivered specifically to caregivers on patient outcomes has not been well explored, particularly for early schizophrenia. Furthermore, there is a lack of research examining the benefits of telehealth-based psychoeducation for caregivers on either patient or caregiver outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The Family Intervention in Recent-Onset Schizophr
