In vivo hippocampal subfield volumes in bipolar disorder-A mega-analysis from The Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis Bipolar Disorder Working Group.

The hippocampus consists of anatomically and functionally distinct subfields that may be differentially involved in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Here we, the Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis Bipolar Disorder workinggroup, study hippocampal subfield volumetry in BD. T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans from 4,698 individuals (BD = 1,472, healthy controls [HC] = 3,226) from 23 sites worldwide were processed with FreeSurfer. We used linear mixed-effects models and mega-analysis to investigate differences in hippocampal subfield volumes between BD and …

Longitudinal change in regional brain volumes with exposure to repetitive head impacts.

OBJECTIVE: This study tests the hypothesis that certain MRI-based regional brain volumes will show reductions over time in a cohort exposed … to controls in left (32.1 mm3/y [p = 0.002]) and right (30.6 mm3/y [p = 0.008]) amygdala and right hippocampus (33.5 mm3/y [p = 0.01]). Higher baseline NfL levels were associated with greater volumetric decline in left hippocampus and mid anterior corpus callosum. CONCLUSION: Volumetric loss in different brain regions may reflect different pathologic proces …

Depression comorbid with hyperalgesia: Different roles of neuroinflammation induced by chronic stress and hypercortisolism.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have indicated that inflammatory pathways and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function may be responsib … l1ß levels were found to be elevated in all examined regions, including the raphe nuclei, thalamus, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and pituitary. In the raphe nuclei particularly, CUMS elevated all examined cytokine levels. Chronic CORT treatment, however, produced Il1ß elevation in the hippocampus and the pituitary, with showing elevated levels in all exami …

Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) promotes remyelination via suppression of neuroinflammation in a cuprizone-induced mouse model of demyelination.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelination disease characterized by autoimmune damage to the central nervous system. In this d … ammatory cytokine IL-4 and neurotrophic factor BDNF release was elevated in the corpus callosum and hippocampus after cordycepin treatment. In addition, we also found that cordycepin ameliorated CPZ-induced body weight loss, motor dysfunction, demyelination, glial cells activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the corpus callosum and hippocampus …

Alteration to hippocampal volume and shape confined to cannabis dependence: a multi-site study.

Cannabis use is highly prevalent and often considered to be relatively harmless. Nonetheless, a subset of regular cannabis users may develop dependence, experiencing poorer quality of life and greater mental health problems relative to non-dependent users. The neuroanatomy characterizing cannabis use versus dependence is poorly understood. We aimed to delineate the contributing role of cannabis use and dependence on morphology of the hippocampus, one of the most consistently altered brain regions in cannabis users, in a large multi-site dataset aggregated across four research sites. We compare…

DHA and therapeutic hypothermia in a short-term follow-up piglet model of hypoxia-ischemia: Effects on H+MRS biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia has become the standard of care for newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in high and middle inc … compared to HT. DHA had significant main effects on increasing N-acetylaspartate and glutathione in hippocampus. Therapeutic hypothermia significantly reduced the Lac/NAA ratio and protein expression of IL-1β and TNFα in hippocampus and reduced Troponin T in serum. Neuropathology showed significant differences between sham and hypoxia, but no differences betw …

VEGF treatment during status epilepticus attenuates long-term seizure-associated alterations in astrocyte morphology.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment during pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE) causes sustained preservation of behavioral function in rats in the absence of enduring neuroprotection (Nicoletti et al., 2010), suggesting the possibility that other cells or mechanisms could be involved in the beneficial effects of VEGF during SE. Astrocytes have been reported to contribute to epileptiform discharges in the hippocampus (Tian et al., 2005; Kang et al., 1998) and to express VEGF receptors (Krum & Rosenstein, 2002). We report here that VEGF treatment significantly alters mult…

Unconditioned- and Conditioned- Stimuli Induce Differential Memory Reconsolidation and β-AR-Dependent CREB Activation.

Furthermore, significant CREB activation in almost the whole amygdala and hippocampus was observed after US-retrieval, but CS-retrieval only stimulated CREB activation in the lateral amygdala and the CA3 of hippocampus. In addition, propranolol treatment suppressed memory retrieval-induced CREB activation. These data indicate that US …

Influence of APOE Genotype on Hippocampal Atrophy over Time - An N=1925 Surface-Based ADNI Study.

The apolipoprotein E (APOE) e4 genotype is a powerful risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort, we previously reported significant baseline structural differences in APOE e4 carriers relative to non-carriers, involving the left hippocampus more than the right--a difference more pronounced in e4 homozygotes than heterozygotes. We now examine the longitudinal effects of APOE genotype on hippocampal morphometry at 6-, 12- and 24-months, in the ADNI cohort. We employed a new automated surface registration system based on …
