The clinical, laboratory and epidemiological characteristics of 38 adult Jamaican patients with polymyositis were evaluated. Twenty-four patients (63%) were human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) seropositive and 14 patients (37%) were HTLV-1 seronegative. Polymyositis runs a more protracted course in seropositive patients who had more frequent hospital admissions and a significantly longer duration of symptoms prior to presentation. Recent studies suggest that interleukin (IL)-8 exerts a direct influence on several functions such as the chemotaxis or proliferation of human keratinocytes (HK). Since the effects of IL-8 in skin are mediated through specific receptors, we have studied the characteristics of the keratinocyte IL-8 receptor. Paramyosin from the blood fluke, Schistosoma mansoni, has shown promise as a vaccine candidate for schistosomiasis mansoni. Here we report the cloning and partial nucleotide sequence of a cDNA encoding paramyosin from the related human parasite, Schistosoma japonicum. Affinity purified antibodies to this clone recognized a S. japonicum antigen of molecular weight 97 kDa, equivalent to the reported size of S. mansoni paramyosin. We established a new cell line (FU-UrC-1) derived from a human primary ureteral carcinoma xenografted in a nude mouse. A syndrome in male cats analogous to chromatin-positive Klinefelter's syndrome in human males has been demonstrated. The physical characteristics which suggested an abnormality of chromosome number in cats were "calico" or "tortoise-shell" coat colors in a male.
