The nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays a key role in reward-related behaviors and is involved in several neurological and psychiatric disorders. While the cortical and subcortical connections of the NAc are well-documented, its anatomical connectivity with brainstem and cerebellar structures is comparatively poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the anatomical connections of the NAc with the underexplored brainstem and cerebellar connections, which may have implications for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying many neurological conditions. The brainstem and cerebellar connecti

Airborne particle pollution causes a range of respiratory and cardiovascular disorders by entering the human respiratory system through the breathing process. The administration of pharmaceutical particles by inhalation is another effective way to treat pulmonary illnesses. Studying particle deposition in the respiratory system during human breathing is crucial to maintaining human health. This necessity served as the impetus for this work, which aims to investigate how the airflow and particles' deposition are influenced by constant inhalation and circulatory breathing, particle diameter, and

Human ancestors first modified stones into tools 2.6 million years ago, initiating a cascading increase in technological complexity that continues today. A parallel trend of brain expansion during the Paleolithic has motivated over 100 years of theorizing linking stone toolmaking and human brain evolution, but empirical support remains limited. Our study provides the first direct experimental evidence identifying likely neuroanatomical targets of natural selection acting on toolmaking ability. Subjects received MRI and DTI scans before, during, and after a 2-year Paleolithic toolmaking trainin

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation can modulate immune responses in animal and humans. Remarkably, the ultraviolet-induced immunosuppression is not restricted to the exposed skin but is also found at other body sites, i.e., systemic immunosuppression. Effects of ultraviolet radiation on infections cannot be determined by experimentation on humans, but the effects of ultraviolet on vaccination may serve as a model. Moreover, it is important in its own right to assess whether ultraviolet radiation affects vaccination responses. In this study the effect of ultraviolet B exposure on the development

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) serves as a crucial link in the pathogenesis of chronic high-altitude diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and ultimately may lead to right heart failure. Hypoxia triggers immune responses and inflammatory processes, which contribute to vascular remodeling and elevated pulmonary artery pressure. NLRX1, a member of the Nod-like receptor family, plays a significant regulatory role in immunity, antioxidation, and apoptosis. However, its role in the occurrence and development of HPH remains unknown.

BACKGROUND: Gut pathological microbial imbalance or dysbiosis is closely associated with colorectal cancer. Although there are observable differences in molecular and clinical characteristics between patients with right- and left-sided colon cancer, differences in their gut microbiomes have not been thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, subsequent changes in microbiota status after partial colectomy remain unknown. We examined the human gut microbiota composition to determine its relationship with colon cancer and partial colon resection according to location.

OBJECTIVE: Alterations in amino acid concentrations are a major contributor to the persistent neurological and behavioral effects induced by concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Glutamate, the most abundant excitatory amino acid in the CNS, has a major role in the pathophysiological process of concussion. The indiscriminate liberation of glutamate immediately after a concussion triggers an excitotoxic response that leads to cell death, neuronal damage, and the dysfunction of surviving neurons, largely by overactivation of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) glutamatergic receptors. BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of regulatory RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. Little, however, is known on the expression profile of circulating miRNAs in Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) patients late after surgical repair. In this study, we aimed to identify the specific patterns of circulating miRNAs in blood of patients with repaired, non-syndromic TOF and to assess whether these specific miRNAs may be useful to differentiate patients with and without heart failure.
METHODS: SurePrint™ 8 × 60 K Human v16 miRNA arrays were used to determine miRNA expression p

BACKGROUND: Back injury is a common place in our society. Up to two-thirds of back injuries have been associated with trunk rotation. However, the torque production ability with a rotated spine and electromyographic activity of trunk muscles in such efforts is poorly understood. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to study torque production capacity of variously rotated and flexed trunk and to measure the EMG of selected trunk muscles in these activities.
METHODS: Nineteen normal young subjects (7 males and 12 females) were recruited. Subjects were stabilized on a posture-stabilizing

An optimized phosphorous ((31)P) three-dimensional chemical-shift imaging (3D-CSI) protocol was developed at 4 T to study the phospholipid metabolism from discrete regions in the human brain without the need for (1)H-decoupling or nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE). In this study, a spherically bound, weighted average, random point omission 3D-CSI technique was developed and tested, based on methods proposed in the literature. The technique yields a significant (p < 0.001, two-tailed, 5% confidence level) increase in signal-to-noise (SNR) efficiency over conventional 3D-CSI (phantom 32%), wi

BACKGROUND: Compared to other primates, humans display unique behaviors including language and complex tool use. These abilities are made possible in part by the cerebellum. This region of the hindbrain, comprising the flocculus, vermis, and lateral hemispheres, has expanded throughout primate evolution, particularly in great apes. Given the cerebellum's architecture-differing in connectivity, neuron content, and functions across subregions-examining subregional differences is crucial to understanding its evolutionary trajectory.
RESULTS: We performed bulk RNA-seq across samples from six prim

Animal Assisted Interventions (AAIs) have been shown to have several effects in humans but the underlying cerebral mechanisms are still widely unknown. This research explored the neurological aspects of human-animal interactions. Specifically, we focused on frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), a feature indicating differences in alpha power between the left and right frontal cortex, which is recognized as a correlate of approach motivation and positive affect. Twenty-nine healthy adults participated in this study, in which we used electroencephalography to measure their brain activity. The study com

BACKGROUND: Abnormal retinoic acid (RA) signalling is considered a major cause of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in infants born with CDH. Experimental studies in animals have found that RA signalling is involved in lung and liver development, but animal models of CDH do not directly correlate with CDH in human fetuses. This study investigated if RA status is also linked to lung and liver growth in human fetuses with CDH.
