PURPOSE: This article documents a case in which soft tissue and bone damage was associated with a long-standing habit of improper flossing.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 33-year-old patient with excellent oral hygiene presented with gingival clefting and an unusual pattern of moderate angular bone loss at several sites. Previous radiographs suggested that some bony lesions had been present for more than 13 years. Examination revealed no evidence that the osseous defects were related to chronic periodontitis or occlusal trauma. The focus of treatment for these chronic injuries was teaching the patient a

Currently, there are approximately 6 million people with irreversible blindness as a result of chronic follicular conjunctivitis with subsequent corneal scarring caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, also known as trachoma. On the basis of the clinical studies evaluated, the most widely tested effective pharmacological treatments for trachoma today are topical tetracycline 1% to be applied to both eyes twice daily for 6 weeks or a single oral dose of azithromycin 20 mg/kg (up to 1g). Although chemotherapy can generate prompt therapeutic response and surgery can reverse the repercussions of these in

A condition called "Post-polio Syndrome" (PPS) is a special type of neuromuscular disturbance that affects some elderly patients who had polio myelitis either as children or as young adults. It has been reported that approximately 1,600,000 polio survivors are alive today. Most will seek dental care, and up to half of the survivors will present with some form of PPS. This paper describes polio, its characteristics, and the long-term consideration of PPS, and discusses the special clinical implications related to this condition. Special emphasis is placed on physical impairments, breathing prob

Although most tympanic membrane perforations heal spontaneously, persistent perforations frequently require treatment by otolaryngologists. Initial management strategies include keeping the ear dry, ensuring aural hygiene, and using topical antibiotics. For persistent perforations, paper patching or myringoplasty may be required. Recently, agents such as hyaluronic acid and epidermal growth factor have been used to promote tympanic membrane healing. Similarly, pentoxifylline, a pharmaceutical agent with hemorrheological and antithrombotic properties, has been shown to increase perfusion and ac

Urinary tract infection (UTI) continues to be the most frequent secondary medical complication experienced by persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). We developed a carepath designed to minimize recurrent UTIs in patients identified as at risk. Data were collected in a prospective fashion for 1,000 consecutive days at an outpatient SCI clinic. The number of UTIs decreased to below threshold in 65 percent of the patients when the nurse clinician counseled them regarding proper technique and hygiene related to clean intermittent catheterization. Of the patients who responded to this intervention,

This report describes a significant bone regeneration in a mandibular molar with advancing long-standing periodontal disease (defect extending to apex and into furcation) following a single episode of scaling and root planing. A 52-year-old female suffered from generalized moderate periodontitis for two years. An acute periodontal abscess with a 12 mm probing depth around the right mandibular first molar was noted. After incision and drainage, thorough scaling and root planing was performed under local anaesthesia. Three months later, radiographic examination showed complete bone regeneration

Noma is an ulcerative-necrotizing gingivo-stomatitis eventually leading to severe destruction of the midface, including lips and cheek, maxilla/mandible, nose and rarely the orbit. The defects are usually unilateral. Children from economically underdeveloped countries are predominantly affected. Medically untreated the disease has a high mortality rate, which can be dramatically lowered by adequate antibiotic therapy started in time. Predisposing factors include malnourishment, immunosuppression, and poor oral hygiene. Forty-eight noma patients were surgically treated in Sokoto, Nigeria during

Botulinum toxin has been tested as a treatment for spasticity resulting from cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke. The results of 18 studies are reviewed in this article. In both open label and double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, botulinum toxin has proven to be an effective measure for reduction of focal spasticity. Improvements have been documented in tone reduction, range of motion, hygiene, autonomic dysreflexia, gait pattern, positioning, and other criteria, though not all criteria tested showed improvement in all studies. In none

As the United States population ages, people will be taking more medications which may benefit their general health but not necessarily their periodontal health. The effects of medications have been grouped into six categories as follows: behavioral alteration of oral hygiene methods, alteration of plaque composition, effect on gingival tissues, effect on alveolar bone, effect on gingival crevicular fluid, and effect on salivary flow. Although most medications discussed in this paper increase the risk for periodontal disease, a few may actually decrease the risk. These include the effect of Ph

The treatment of localized juvenile periodontitis has been previously described in the literature, utilizing primarily a long-term (2 to 6 week) antibiotic regimen, notably tetracycline. This case report of juvenile periodontitis with extensive bone loss describes a short-term treatment (8 days), using a combination of two antibiotics and mechanical debridement. Clinical treatment included instruction of proper oral hygiene techniques. Initial scaling and root planing were performed to remove supragingival and subgingival accretions, followed by 2-month maintenance recalls. Pre- and postoperat

Outbreaks of infection associated with milk and other dairy products in Europe and North America from 1980 to 1985 are reviewed. Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. were the most commonly identified etiological agents, while other infections of animal origin, in particular listeriosis and yersiniosis, were increasingly reported. Most infections were attributed to untreated cows' milk or cheese, but also increasingly to contaminated "heat-treated" products. Heat-treatment is highly effective in controlling foodborne disease, but may be insufficient if not complemented by high standards of hy

A review of 100 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty revealed 47 who required therapeutic soft contact lenses in the early postoperative period. Twelve corneal ulcer-infiltrates, 11 of which were culture positive, occurred during soft contact lens wear (23% incidence of this complication in contact lens fitted eyes). The most common offending organism was coagulase-negative staphylococcus. The only statistically significant risk factor for infection if a lens was used was the presence of a persistent epithelial defect (p = 0.03). Factors which could not be statistically correlated w

Industrial hygiene measurements were taken at five lead acid battery plants. The average of all personal samples for H2SO4 was 0.18 mg/m3 with a range of "nondetectable" to 1.7 mg/m3. Highest levels of acid were found in the charging and forming areas of the plants. Stibine and arsine were also detected in the charging and forming areas (means = 0.44 and 0.042 mg/m3, respectively). Arsenic in particulate form was also detected, but levels were low (means = 0.00083 mg/m3). The average mass median aerodynamic diameter of the acid mist as measured by cascade impactors was approximately 5 micron.

BACKGROUND: Bovine mastitis is a major economic challenge to dairy production globally. Despite its impact, there is limited information on the disease and its associated risk factors in the dairy sector of Dessie Town, Northeast Ethiopia. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of bovine mastitis, identify risk factors, and isolate Staphylococcus aureus from mastitic milk in the study area.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 304 lactating dairy cows across smallholder farms and semi-intensive farms. Clinical examination and the California mastitis test (CMT) were used to
