Protocol and statistical analysis plan for a randomized controlled trial of the effect of intravenous iron on anemia in Malawian pregnant women in their third trimester (REVAMP - TT).

BACKGROUND: Anemia affects 40% of pregnant women globally, leading to maternal mortality, premature birth, low birth weight, and poor baby development. Iron deficiency causes over 40% of anemia cases in Africa. Oral iron supplementation is insufficient for Low-and-Middle-Income-Countries (LMICs) to meet current WHO targets. We hypothesized that a single intravenous dose of Ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM) may be more effective than oral iron treatment for anemia recovery, particularly in these settings where women present late for antenatal care. METHODS: This is a two-arm parallel open-label indi

Resilience to maintain quality of intrapartum care in war torn Yemen: a retrospective pre-post study evaluating effects of changing birth volumes in a congested frontline hospital.

BACKGROUND: Fragile and conflict-affected states contribute with more than 60% of the global burden of maternal mortality. There is an alarming need for research exploring maternal health service access and quality and adaptive responses during armed conflict. Taiz Houbane Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Yemen was established during the war as such adaptive response. However, as number of births vastly exceeded the facility's pre-dimensioned capacity, a policy was implemented to restrict admissions. We here assess the restriction's effects on the quality of intrapartum care and birth out…

Knowledge and practice of birth preparedness and complication readiness among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in Openzinzi Hciii, Adjumani District, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Every day, approximately 830 women globally die from pregnancy-child birth related complications and all maternal deaths are mainly due to the three phases of delay usually experienced in maternal care which originates from inadequate or lack of birth and emergency preparedness. Despite the benefit of Birth Preparedness and Complications Readiness (BPACR) in the reduction of the three phases of delay and thus reduction of maternal deaths and complications, no study has been conducted in Adjumani district to assess the knowledge and practice of birth preparedness and complication

SLK Triple Therapy Improves Maternal and Fetal Status and Promotes Postpartum Pelvic Floor Function in Chinese Primiparous Women.

BACKGROUND During pregnancy, appropriate physical activity plays critical roles in maternal and fetal health. This study investigated the effects of Sophrology childbirth-Kegel-Lamaze respiratory training (SLK triple therapy) on maternal and newborn health, pelvic floor function, and quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS Single-pregnant primiparous women involved in this study were divided into the control group (n=120) and the SLK triple therapy group (n=120). SLK triple therapy was taught to and practiced by the women in the SLK triple therapy group. Data on delivery mode (natural delivery o

Resilience as a moderator between syndemics and depression in mothers living with HIV.

Physical and emotional adversities in mothers have rippling effects across the family system. While an association between individual maternal adversities and problematic mental health outcomes has been established, less is known about co-existing adversities in mothers. Consistent with the syndemic conceptual framework, we examined the co-occurrence of Substance Abuse, Violence, and AIDS/HIV (i.e., SAVA), which are three adversities that uniquely affect racial/ethnic minorities, individuals living in poverty, and people in urban communities. We assessed the relationship between SAVA adversiti

A multi-centre phase IIa clinical study of predictive testing for pre-eclampsia. IMproved PRegnancy Outcomes Via Early Detection (IMPROVED).

1 in 20 first time pregnancies is complicated by pre-eclampsia, the leading cause of maternal death in Europe. No clinically useful early pregnancy screening test exists, consequentially clinicians are unable to offer targeted surveillance or preventative strategies. IMPROVED Consortium members have pioneered a personalised medicine approach in identifying blood-borne biomarkers through recent technological advancements, involving mapping of the blood metabolome and proteome. The Consortium recently received funding under the auspices of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union under

Effects of abortion legalization in Nepal, 2001-2010.

BACKGROUND: Abortion was legalized in Nepal in 2002, following advocacy efforts highlighting high maternal mortality from unsafe abortion. We sought to assess whether legalization led to reductions in the most serious maternal health consequences of unsafe abortion. METHODS: We conducted retrospective medical chart review of all gynecological cases presenting at four large public referral hospitals in Nepal. For the years 2001-2010, all cases of spontaneous and induced abortion complications were identified, abstracted, and coded to classify cases of serious infection, injury, and systemic co…

Experiences of Respectful Maternity Care among postnatal women at a tertiary care hospital in new Delhi.

BACKGROUND: Compassionate support and a nurturing environment are essential for a positive, dignified birthing experience. A dearth of respectful maternity care not only undermines the overall quality of services but also has far-reaching implications on women's healthcare-seeking behaviour and trust in the health system. Despite increasing institutional deliveries in India, evidence suggests that mistreatment and lack of respectful care persist in healthcare settings. This study assesses the experiences of RMC among postnatal women in a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi and explores its ass

Sustainable palm weevil farming as nutrition supplementation at maternity waiting homes in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a global health challenge exacerbated by COVID-19. In Liberia, two-thirds of pregnant women are anemic, one-third of children are stunted, and 70% of households experienced food insecurity due to COVID-19. Edible insects are a nutritious, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective dietary supplement used throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Rearing palm weevil insects at maternity waiting homes (MWHs)-residential dwellings near hospitals where pregnant women await childbirth and receive postpartum services-could serve as a nutritious supplement for expectant mothe

High rates of maternal depression amongst Syrian refugees in Lebanon - a pilot study.

This pilot study compares symptoms of depression and risk factors amongst Syrian refugees and low-income Lebanese mothers accessing a primary care centre in Beirut between January and June 2018. Women who gave birth in the previous two years or who were currently pregnant were included in the study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Arabic Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Correlations between EPDS score and sociodemographic and mental health variables were analysed using Pearson's coefficient and ANOVA. 35 Syrian and 25 Lebanese women were recruited, 15 of whom were pregn

Narratives of women presenting with abortion complications in Southwestern Nigeria: A qualitative study.

Unsafe abortion continues to impact negatively on women's health in countries with restrictive abortion laws. It remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity. Paradoxically, modern contraceptive prevalence remains low and the unmet need for contraception continues to mirror unwanted pregnancy rates in many countries within sub-Saharan Africa. This qualitative study assessed women's knowledge; their expectation and experiences of the methods employed for abortion; and their health care-seeking decisions following a complicated abortion. Women who presented with abortion

Labour induction practices in France: A population-based declarative survey in 94 maternity units.

INTRODUCTION: In 2016, 22.0% of deliveries in France were induced. The current lack of high level of evidence data about the methods and indications for induction of labour has promoted heterogeneous and non-recommended practices. The extent of these different practices is not adequately known in France today, although they may influence perinatal outcomes. The objective of this study was to report current practices of induction of labour in France. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study surveyed 94 maternity units in seven perinatal networks. A questionnaire was sent by email to either the departm

[PREVFNAIT prevention of foetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) in Polish foetuses and newborns--the PREVFNAIT program].

The scientific goals related to the grant include 1) estimation of FNAIT prevalence in Poland and 2) search for biomarkers to predict the risk of the antibody production and severity of fetal thrombocytopenia. Fetal/Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) is caused by destruction of fetal blood platelets due to maternal antibodies. This condition, which most commonly results from incompatibility between the mother and the fetus for the Human Platelet Antigen-1a (HPA-1a), may lead to intracranial hemorrhage, damage of the central nervous system (CNS) and even death of the fetus or the newb

Awake at the switch: improving fish consumption advisories for at-risk women.

Eating fish provides health benefits; however, nearly all fish contain at least some methylmercury which can impair human health. While government agencies have been issuing fish consumption advisories for 40 years, recent evaluation efforts highlight their poor performance. The benefit of an advisory can be measured by its ability to inform consumers as to both the positive and negative attributes of their potential choices, leading to appropriate changes in behavior. Because of the health benefits, fish advisories should not reduce fish consumption, even among at-risk individuals, but should

Community-based approaches to address childhood undernutrition and obesity in developing countries.

Community-based approaches have been the mainstay of interventions to address the problem of child malnutrition in developing societies. Many programs have been in operation in several countries for decades and originated largely as social welfare, food security and poverty eradication programs. Increasingly conceptual frameworks to guide this activity have been developed as our understanding of the complex nature of the determinants of undernutrition improves. Alongside this evolution, is the accumulation of evidence on the types of interventions in the community that are effective, practical
