Causes of Mortality and Risk Factors for Injury Mortality among Children in the Agricultural Health Study.

Farm children face unique health risks due to sharing their residential environment with hazardous machinery and materials. Causes of mortality among farm children have not been comprehensively described. OBJECTIVE: In the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) cohort, we examined causes of mortality among 21,360 children in Iowa and North Carolina between 1975 and 1998. METHODS: We matched identifying information for children provided by mothers on self-administered questionnaires to state death registries (1975-1998). Data on farm and family characteristics were provided by parents via enrollment q

Perinatal outcomes in two dissimilar immigrant populations in the United States: a dual epidemiologic paradox.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have addressed perinatal outcomes in Hispanic, black, and white non-Hispanic women and demonstrated that although foreign-born Mexican American women have many demographic and socioeconomic risk factors, their rates of low birth weight (LBW) infants and infant mortality are similar to those of white women. This phenomenon has been termed an epidemiologic paradox. There have been no population-based studies on women of Asian Indian origin, a relatively new, highly educated, and affluent immigrant group that has been reported to have a high rate of LBW infants. The ob

Post-caesarean section infection burden, antimicrobial resistance pattern, and associated factors at all Africa Leprosy Rehabilitation and Training Center Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections are a major concern in maternal healthcare, especially after cesarean sections (CSs), which are among the most common surgical procedures globally. The World Health Organization reports a pooled prevalence of SSIs in low- and middle-income countries at 5.6 per 100 surgical patients. The global incidence of SSIs after CS is approximately 5.63%, with significant variations: 0.15% in China, 8.02% in India, and 12.6% in Nepal. In sub-Saharan Africa, the incidence is 7.3%, while Ethiopia reports rates as high as 10.4%. Risk factors include older age, prolonged h

Perinatal health outcomes in relation to principal applicant and live-in caregiver status among economic class immigrants to Canada: A retrospective analysis of births from 1993 to 2017.

OBJECTIVES: Economic class immigrants to Canada tend to have better health outcomes than other immigrant groups. However, variation may exist even within this population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of data from the Migrant Maternal and Infant Morbidity and Mortality (MMIMM) dataset, which linked Canadian birth and infant death records (1993-2017) with maternal immigration records (1952-2017). All singleton births to economic class immigrant women at least 18 years of age at immigration were analyzed. Women were classified as principal applicants (PA), non-principal

Early cryoprecipitate transfusion through goal-directed bleeding management in a real world setting-How important it is to focus on the fibrinogen in major obstetric Haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) causes ~70 000 maternal deaths annually, making it one of the leading causes of preventable maternal mortality. This study evaluated the effectiveness of individualised goal-directed bleeding management (GDBM) in severe PPH in our centre with unique geographical challenges. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of severe PPH requiring massive transfusion over 1 years. Patients were classified into a fixed ratio (1:1:1) massive transfusion protocol (Group 1) and GDBM (Group 2). Study outcomes included blood utilisation, persistence of coagulopa…

Small for Gestational Age Coded Diagnoses in Aotearoa New Zealand's Administrative Health Datasets: A Validation Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Inaccurate coding of small for gestational age (SGA) infants in routinely collected health data has implications for research based on those data. We aimed to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of coded SGA diagnoses in New Zealand's routinely collected hospitalisation and mortality data, and determine whether sensitivity and specificity varied by infant, pregnancy, and maternal characteristics. METHODS: We estimated birthweight centiles of live and stillborn infants delivered in New Zealand between 2005 and 2020 using the Fenton Population Reference Calculator and

Advancing knowledge and public health: a scientific exploration of abortion safety.

Abortion is a fundamental component of reproductive healthcare, essential for managing unintended pregnancies and preserving the health and autonomy of individuals. Despite its medical necessity and established safety, abortion remains a topic of global controversy, shaped by sociopolitical, ethical, and legal factors rather than evidence-based practice. This editorial consolidates current scientific insights into abortion safety, mainly exploring its medical, but also legal, ethical, social, and public health dimensions. Globally, nearly 73 million abortions occur annually, highlighting the p

Chromosomal aberrations and early mortality in a non-mammalian vertebrate: example from pressure-induced triploid Atlantic salmon.

In commercial aquaculture, the production of triploid fish is currently the most practical approach to prevent maturation and farm-to-wild introgression following escapes. However, triploids often exhibit poor welfare, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Inheritance issues associated with sub-optimal hydrostatic pressure treatments used to induce triploidy, or the genetic background of parental fish, have been speculated to contribute. We tested this by quantifying the frequency and type of chromosomal aberrations in Atlantic salmon subjected to a gradient of sub-optimal pressure tre
