Relationships between educational attainment, hypertension, and amyloid negative subcortical vascular dementia: The brain-battering hypothesis.

PURPOSE: Many epidemiological studies suggest that lower education levels and vascular risk factors increase the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) and subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD). However, whether the brain-battering hypothesis can explain the relationship between education levels and the clinical diagnosis of dementia remains controversial. The objective of this study was to investigate whether vascular risk factors mediate the association between education level and the diagnosis of amyloid-beta positive (Aβ+) ADD and amyloid-beta negative (Aβ-) SVaD. Asymmetric Connectivity Between Redox-Active Tyrosines and Reaction-Center Chlorophylls in Photosystem II.

Photosystem II (PSII) contains several cofactors involved in light harvesting, charge separation, electron transfer, and catalysis. The initial charge separation in the reaction center of PSII creates the strongest known redox-cofactor oxidant in biology, a cationic radical distributed over a "special pair" of chlorophyll molecules (P680•+). Two redox-active tyrosines, YZ and YD, located at opposite sides of the special pair, are the principal residues that reduce this cationic radical. YZ, in turn, oxidizes the manganese cluster of the oxygen-evolving complex to drive water oxidation, whereas

Novel insights into the complex interplay of immune dysregulation and inflammatory biomarkers in preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction: A two-step Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between genetic immune dysregulation and the occurrence of preeclampsia (PE) or PE with fetal growth restriction (PE with FGR) has yielded inconsistent findings, and the underlying mediators of this association remain elusive. We aimed to explore the causal impact of genetic immune dysregulation on the risk of PE or PE with FGR and to elucidate the role of specific transcriptomes in mediating this relationship. METHODS: A two-step Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to explore the link between immune dysregulation and PE or PE with FGR, as well as

Investigating influential factors and mechanisms of surgical resident well-being using social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Burnout and depression in General Surgery residents affect patient care and drive attrition. Few impactful interventions exist, in part because little is known about influential drivers and mechanistic relationships. METHODS: Residents from 16 general surgery programs completed published well-being scales in January 2021. Social network analysis demonstrated influential relationships between factors, and path analysis revealed drivers of burnout and depression. RESULTS: 300 residents completed the survey (34% response rate). Workplace demand and mindfulness influenced depressive

Exposure to Traumatic Events and Development of Psychotic Symptoms in a Prison Population: A Network Analysis Approach.

Previous studies consistently observed an association between exposure to traumatic events and psychotic symptoms. However, little is known about the differential impact of distinct traumatic events and the role of general symptoms in mediating this relationship. Thus, our study aimed to explore the differential association of several traumatic events to the psychotic symptoms in a sample of prisoners and whether this association is mediated by general symptoms. The total sample from the Survey of Psychiatric Morbidity Among Prisoners in England and Wales (N = 3039; 75.4% male) was used. Parti

Genetically predicted immune cells mediate the association between gut microbiota and autoimmune liver diseases.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests an association between gut microbiota and Autoimmune Liver Diseases (AILDs). However, causal inference remains controversial due to confounding bias in observational studies. Additionally, there is currently no clear evidence indicating that immune cells act as intermediate phenotypes in the pathogenesis of AILDs. This study utilizes the Mendelian Randomization (MR) method to investigate the causal relationships among gut microbiota, immune cells, and AILDs. METHODS: Initially, we conducted a two-sample MR analysis to predict the causal relationships a

The Mediator Testing of Association Between Fear of Hypoglycemia and Diabetes Self-Management in Chinese Adolescents with T1DM: Diabetes Distress or Depressive Symptoms?

Fear of hypoglycemia may represent an important target for improving diabetes self-management among adolescents with T1DM. However, whether fear of hypoglycemia is associated with diabetes self-management remains undetermined, and the factors contributing to this uncertain association are poorly understood. This study aims to (1) examine the association between fear of hypoglycemia and diabetes self-management in Chinese adolescents with T1DM, and (2) explore potential mediators in this relationship. This muti-site cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2021 and December 2022 acro

Plasma Lipidome Is Dysregulated in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Associated With Life-Course Adiposity Polygenic Risk.

OBJECTIVE: Although both pre-symptomatic adiposity and dysregulated lipid metabolism are implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the mechanistic pathways linking adiposity to disease remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate how genetic predisposition to adiposity might influence ALS through specific lipid metabolic pathways. METHODS: We conducted mass spectrometry-based quantitative lipidomics on plasma from 104 ALS patients and 78 age- and sex-matched controls.
