BACKGROUND: We evaluated the results of ankle arthrodesis performed with circular external fixators (CEF) in those patients who had developed tibiotalar arthritis secondary to a landmine or a gunshot injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen ankles in 19 patients were fused using CEF. All patients had approximately 3 (range, 1 to 5) operations for bone and soft tissue reconstruction preceding the arthrodesis. Ankle arthrodesis was performed an average of 2.3 (range, 1 to 7) years after the initial trauma. The mean age at operation was 22 (range, 20 to 31) years old and all patients were male.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the in vitro effects of several nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs on the IL-1 altered expression and activity of tPA, uPA and PAI-1 by articular chondrocytes.
METHODS: Bovine chondrocytes were cultured in alginate gel beads. Cells were treated with IL-1alpha in the presence or absence of drugs at various concentrations. Expression of mRNA for the plasminogen activators (uPA and tPA) and their inhibitor (PAI-1) were analyzed by RT-PCR-ELISA. The protein content of PAI-1 in culture media was deter mined by ELISA. PA activity was measured by a functional assay.

METHODS: The authors present the surgical treatment of 20 post-traumatic arteriovenous fistulas and 33 arterial pseudoaneurysms that have been treated in the last 5 years in the Centre for Vascular Surgery of the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases, Clinical Centre of Serbia in Belgrade. A clinico-pathological study was done to elucidate characteristic features of subacute interstitial pneumonia. The patients were four men and mine women, with a mean age of 60 years. In ten patients, the disease was idiopathic, three had collagen vascular disease, (and one was undergoing gold therapy for rheumatoid arthritis). The time interval between onset of symptoms and open lung biopsy was 80 +/- 40 days. Eleven patients had progressive dyspnea, seven had coughing, and only one complained of fever. Fine crakles were heard in ten patients. Mild increases in CRP were observed in all cases.
