BMHC-1: a novel chromosomally encoded metallo-β-lactamase with potent carbapenemase activity and potential for global dissemination in zoonotic and human pathogens.

OBJECTIVES: Chromosomally encoded metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) are frequently overlooked in surveillance due to assumed limited transmissibility. We characterized BMHC-1, a novel subclass B1 MBL identified in Riemerella anatipestifer, to evaluate its biochemical properties, structural features and mobilization potential across human, animal and environmental settings. METHODS: The blaBMHC-1 gene was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli and R. anatipestifer. Antimicrobial susceptibility, enzyme kinetics and inhibition profiles were determined. The AlphaFold3-predicted structure was used

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) transport from biosolids-amended soils: An experimental and numerical approach.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) do not mineralize in conventional wastewater treatment processes and accumulate in effluents and biosolids. Land-application of biosolids improves soil health; however, PFAS may leach from applied biosolids posing a threat to underlying groundwater systems. In general, transport mechanisms controlling PFAS leaching from biosolids are not fully understood. In this study, two municipal biosolids were mixed with soil at agricultural loading rates and packed in saturated flow-through columns. Biosolids, biosolids-amended soils (pre- and post-leaching) and

Enzymatic degradation of biopolymers in amorphous and molten states: mechanisms and applications.

Plastic waste from fossil-derived polymers remains a major environmental challenge, driving interest in biopolymers and enzyme-enabled end-of-life strategies. This review synthesizes current understanding of how polymer structure and thermal state govern enzymatic degradability, with emphasis on semicrystalline architectures and state-dependent accessibility. Within the Keller-Flory two-phase framework, crystalline lamellae embedded in an amorphous matrix dictate water/enzyme diffusion, chain mobility, and hydrolysis kinetics. Enzymatic attack preferentially initiates in amorphous regions, pro

Prefrontal cortex activity during virtual obstacle avoidance and distracted walking: A methodological proof of concept using augmented reality and functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION: There is an established interplay between gait and attention allocation. Attention during walking is important to reduce instability, process environmental stimuli, and perform simultaneous tasks. It is of critical importance to consider how attention modulation during dual-tasking influences prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity and gait characteristics. However, paradigms probing this relationship are often limited in realism and must balance mobility challenges with practicality. This protocol introduces a novel methodology combining functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) an

Patient-Reported Outcomes in Children With Idiopathic Clubfoot Deformity Treated With Ponseti Casting: Does Recurrence of the Deformity Play a Role?

INTRODUCTION: Despite the high effectiveness of Ponseti casting in treating idiopathic clubfoot, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are not studied well in the literature, necessitating further investigation into PROs to evaluate the effect on patients' lives. We used the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) to evaluate PROs in children with Ponseti-treated clubfoot and assess the effect of recurrence on these PROs. METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed medical records from patients ages 5 to 18 years treated for idiopathic clubfoot at a single institution fr

Comparison of Short-Term Outcomes and Survivorship of Three Modular Dual Mobility Implants in Primary Total Hip Surgery.

Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common procedure, yet instability and dislocation remain leading causes of revision. Dual mobility (DM) acetabular constructs improve stability, but comparative data across modular DM systems are limited. This study compared the safety and efficacy of three modular DM implants in primary THA, focusing on acetabular revision and functional recovery. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 963 primary THAs performed from 2016-2024 using three modular DM systems. Patients with revision or bilateral THA, age < 18, or <2 years of follow-up were excluded. O

Implementing oral (event-driven and daily) and long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis in mobile men in sub-Saharan Africa: a phase 3b, open-label, hybrid type 2 implementation and effectiveness trial (MOBILE MEN).

BACKGROUND: Men who are mobile for work are a key population at high risk of acquiring HIV. Flexible pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) options, including event-driven (ED) oral PrEP and long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA), may offer increased access and acceptability for these men. However, limited data exist on the effectiveness and implementation of CAB-LA and ED PrEP among mobile men in Africa. Our study aims to assess the effectiveness and implementation of CAB-LA and oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) (both daily and ED) through comparison of uptake, retenti

Investigating the prognostic value of digital mobility outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Reduced mobility is a central feature of COPD. Assessment of mobility outcomes that can be measured digitally (digital mobility outcomes (DMOs)) in daily life such as gait speed and steps per day is increasingly possible using devices such as pedometers and accelerometers, but the predictive value of these measures remains unclear in relation to key outcomes such as hospital admission and survival. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review, nested within a larger scoping review by the MOBILISE-D consortium, addressing DMOs in a range of chronic conditions. Qualitative and quantita
