Minimal eating observation form: reliability and validity.

OBJECTIVES: Eating difficulties are common for patients in hospitals (82% have one or more). Eating difficulties predict undernourishment, need for assistance when eating, length of hospital stay and level of care after hospital stay. Eating difficulties have through factor analysis (FA) been found to belong to three dimensions (ingestion, deglutition and energy). The present study investigates inter-observer reliability. Other questions at issue are if the findings from the previous FA can be confirmed, if adjustments need to be done and if the Minimal Eating Form (MEOF) can serve as an asses

What is the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of using drugs in treating obese patients in primary care? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Obesity [defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m(2)] represents a considerable public health problem and is associated with a significant range of comorbidities and an increased mortality risk. The primary aim of the management of obesity is to achieve weight reduction in the interests of health. For obese patients who cannot achieve or maintain a healthy weight by non-pharmacological means, drug therapy is recommended in combination with non-pharmacological interventions such as dietary modifications and exercise. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost-ef

Clinician Staffing and Quality of Care in US Health Centers.

IMPORTANCE: Health centers are vital primary care safety nets for underserved populations, but optimal clinician staffing associated with quality care is unclear. Understanding the association of clinician staffing patterns with quality of care may inform care delivery, scope-of-practice policy, and resource allocation. OBJECTIVE: To describe the association of clinician staffing models and ratios with quality-of-care metrics in health centers. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study of US health centers used data from the 2022 Health Resources and Services Administrati

Headache disorders among Indigenous communities: A scoping review undertaken with knowledge keeper guidance.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a scoping review of literature on headache etiology, classification, prevalence, and treatment in Indigenous communities in Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. BACKGROUND: In the United States, analysis of national prevalence indicates that Indigenous Americans lead all other racial/ethnic groups in headache prevalence. Risk factors associated with headache burden, including diabetes, head injury, psychological trauma, environmental exposures, and lack of access to appropriate diagnosis and treatment, have been documented in Indigenous communities ac

Cognitive Sarcopenia: Prevalence and the Risk for Mortality and Healthy Aging in the KORA-Age Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive sarcopenia, defined by this study as the co-existence of sarcopenia and cognitive impairment, has been frequently reported in older adults, while we hypothesize that the co-existence increases the risk for adverse outcomes in the older general population. METHODS: This study included 1055 participants aged 65-93 years from the population-based cohort Cooperative Health Research in the Region Augsburg (KORA)-Age (2008/9). At baseline, probable sarcopenia (i.e., low grip strength) and confirmed sarcopenia (i.e., probable sarcopenia plus low muscle mass) were defined accord

Community and residential care providers' perspectives on the impact of mobile x-ray services in Ireland: A national study.

BACKGROUND: Mobile X-ray services offer timely diagnostics for frail or immobile patients, potentially reducing hospital admissions. However, limited research exists on implementation from the care facility perspective. This study examines the operational, organisational, and experiential use of mobile X-ray services in Irish care homes, identifying key barriers and facilitators. METHODS: A cross-sectional electronic survey was distributed to all 377 healthcare facility managers nationwide who use mobile X-ray services, constituting a census of the eligible population. The anonymous survey wa

Conditional survival analysis and risk factors for mortality in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia.

OBJECTIVE: Overall survival (OS) for patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is notably poor, yet traditional survival estimates made at diagnosis fail to account for changes in survival probability over time. Conditional survival (CS) provides a dynamic measure of survival, indicating the likelihood that a patient will survive an additional period, given that they have already lived a certain number of years. Our study aimed to apply this model, commonly used in oncology, to evaluate how clinical presentation, comorbidities, and management impact continued survival in patients

Incidence and risk factors of urinary tract infection in patients with spinal cord injury: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are a common complication in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), substantially impairing their quality of life and elevating mortality risk. Despite existing studies, comprehensive evidence regarding the risk factors for UTI remains insufficient, and the absence of specific preventive strategies presents a serious challenge. This study seeks to investigate how common UTI is among SCI individuals and identify contributing risk factors. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed across multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science

The economic burden of skeletal-related events among elderly men with metastatic prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Advanced prostate cancer patients with bone metastasis are predisposed to skeletal complications termed skeletal-related events (SREs). There is limited information available on Medicare costs associated with treating SREs. The objective of this study was to ascertain SRE-related costs among older men with metastatic prostate cancer in the US. METHODS: We analysed patients aged 66 years or older who were diagnosed with incident stage IV (M1) prostate cancer between 2000 and 2007 from the linked Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare dataset. Navigating reconfiguration: case managers in public municipal healthcare - a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Public municipal healthcare plays a critical role in delivering equitable, need-based services to the inhabitants. The term is used here for publicly financed services holding territory-based responsibility for the health of a defined resident population at municipal or comparable sub-national level. However, demographic shifts, multimorbidity and resource constraints have reinforced a need for systemic reconfiguration. Within the context of these organisational changes, the scoping review will address the current knowledge gap in understanding the roles, experiences and systemic

Challenges and Solutions in Delivering Preventive Periodontal Care to Older Adults in Community and Long-Term Residential Care Settings: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Preventive periodontal care is essential for older people in the community to reduce the risk of tooth loss, systemic diseases, and decreased quality of life. Despite its importance, older people in assisted living, home-based care (HBC), daycare, and other community settings face barriers to effective preventive periodontal care, including mobility, cognitive, and caregiver knowledge issues. Although these challenges are being recognized more and more, the evidence on barriers and solutions for delivering consistent preventive periodontal care remains scattered across different st

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder After Acute Cardiovascular Events: Protocol of a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: An aortic disease diagnosis can be perceived by patients as a stressful and often life-altering event. In addition, an acute event, such as aortic rupture or dissection-and the surgical intervention that will be required to address it-can be viewed as potentially life-threatening and traumatic. Serious health conditions, including stroke and acute coronary syndromes, have been described in the literature to correlate with trauma-like symptoms. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is well described in connection with external traumatic events, such as war, assault and similarly cat

Comparison of Ritchie and Kato-Katz methods for the detection of intestinal helminths in humans: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Comparative evidence on the diagnostic performance of Formalin-Ether Concentration (FEC) versus the Kato-Katz thick smear (KK) for detecting intestinal helminths in humans remains inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the odds of detecting intestinal helminths using FEC versus the single-slide KK. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across six databases (PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, Nursing and Allied Health Premium, and Ovid). Eligible studies directly compared FEC with single-slide KK for stool examination. Data was extracted using a s

Exacerbation and myasthenic crisis in generalized myasthenia gravis: real-world healthcare resource utilization and cost burden in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and cost assessments for generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) rarely include matched controls. HCRU and costs of acute MG-related events (MG exacerbation and myasthenic crisis) have been examined, but aggregation or comparison between studies is limited by heterogeneity. The study aim was to provide comprehensive, real-world data about gMG patients in the United States, including those experiencing MG-related events. A claims database analysis assessed (i) incremental HCRU and cost burden among adults with gMG versus non-gMG controls, (ii) occu

A preoperative risk assessment tool for predicting adverse outcomes among total shoulder arthroplasty patients.

BACKGROUND: With the increased utilization of Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) in the outpatient setting, understanding the risk factors associated with complications and hospital readmissions becomes a more significant consideration. Prior developed assessment metrics in the literature either consisted of hard-to-implement tools or relied on postoperative data to guide decision-making. This study aimed to develop a preoperative risk assessment tool to help predict the risk of hospital readmission and other postoperative adverse outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the 2019-2022(Q
