INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Using existing transthoracic echocardiographic indices to quantify left ventricular wall motion abnormalities (WMAs) can be difficult due to the variations in the location of the abnormalities within the left ventricle, the quality of examinations, and the inter-/intra-observer variability of available indices. This study aimed to evaluate a new approach for measuring the extent of WMA by calculating the percentage of abnormal wall motion and comparing it to the wall motion score index (WMSI). The study also sought to assess inter- and intra-observer variability.

PURPOSE: The optimal motion management strategy for patients receiving stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) for the treatment of ventricular tachycardia (VT) is not fully known. We developed a framework using a digital phantom to simulate cardiorespiratory motion in combination with different motion management strategies to gain insight into the effect of cardiorespiratory motion on STAR.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: The 4-dimensional (4D) extended cardiac-torso (XCAT) phantom was expanded with the 17-segment left ventricular (LV) model, which allowed placement of STAR targets in standardiz

INTRODUCTION: Physical therapy (PT) methods applied in dentistry are increasingly discussed nowadays. Taking into account a rapidly growing number of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and orofacial pain patients, it is reasonable to determine which of the available physiotherapeutic (PT) methods are more effective than others, especially in terms of their possible analgesic and myorelaxant effects.
OBJECTIVE: To assess manual and physical factors influencing pain reduction or elimination and increased muscle tension in patients with TMD; yet the influence of the applied forms of PT on the ra

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are commonly treated with non-surgical or surgical (preferably ORIF) approaches based on fracture characteristics. The postoperative care regimens vary widely, and the impact of very early mobilization on complications and reoperation rates in ankle fractures treated with ORIF remains unclear.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on ankle fractures treated between January 2014 and November 2020. Demographic and fracture characteristic data were collected. Very early prescription of range of motion exercises was defined as initiation within the first week

BACKGROUND: We are unsure if continuous passive motion (CPM) has any role in the nonoperative management of the Primary Stiff Shoulder (frozen shoulder). We hypothesized that there is no difference in pain improvement, range of motion, and function with or without CPM in patients with a primary stiff shoulder.
METHOD: We searched the databases for clinical trials comparing CPM versus no-CPM physiotherapy. In the final step, we reviewed five randomized clinical trials. We collected the data of Constant Shoulder Score (CSS), the visual analog scale of pain, shoulder pain and disability index (S

OBJECTIVE: Kyphotic deformity resulting from the loss of cervical lordosis (CL) is a rare but serious complication after cervical laminoplasty (CLP), and it is essential to recognize the risk factors. Previous studies have demonstrated that a greater flexion range of motion (fROM) and smaller extension ROM (eROM) in the cervical spine are associated with the loss of CL after CLP. Considering these facts together, one can hypothesize that an indicator representing the gap between fROM and eROM (gROM) is highly useful in predicting postoperative CL loss. In the present study, the authors aimed t

BACKGROUND: Recognition of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has gained increasing attention in the past decade. The clinical assessment of mandibular range of motion characteristics is part of the recommended variables to detect TMJ involvement in children with JIA. The aim of this study was to explore explanatory variables for mandibular range of motion outcomes in children with JIA, with and without clinically established TMJ involvement, and in healthy children.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included children with JIA and

We design a pattern of microtexture features to increase hydrodynamic pressure and lubricant film thickness in a hard-on-soft bearing. We use a soft elastohydrodynamic lubrication model to evaluate the effect of microtexture design parameters and bearing operating conditions on the resulting lubricant film thickness and find that the maximum lubricant film thickness occurs with a texture density between 10% and 40% and texture aspect ratio between 1% and 14%, depending on the bearing load and operating conditions. We show that these results are similar to those of hydrodynamic textured bearing

Conductive hydrogel-based epidermal strain sensors can generate repeatable electrical changes upon mechanical deformations for indication of the skin's physiological condition. However, this remains challenging for many conductive hydrogel sensors due to biomechanical mismatch with skin tissues and an unstable resistance variation response, resulting in non-conformable deformations with the epidermis and dermis, and consequently generating inaccurate monitoring of human movements. Herein, a conductive hydrogel that highly matches the skin is fabricated from dynamically hydrogen-bonded nanocrys

BACKGROUND: Limited ankle dorsiflexion, or equinus, is associated with elevated plantar pressures, which have been implicated in the development and non-healing of foot ulcer. A stretching intervention may increase ankle dorsiflexion and reduce plantar pressures in people with diabetes.
METHODS: Two arm parallel randomised controlled trial from September 2016 to October 2017. Adults with diabetes and ankle equinus (≤5° dorsiflexion) were randomly allocated to receive an 8 week static calf stretching intervention or continue with their normal activities. Primary outcome measures were change in

CONTEXT: Ankle proprioception is one of the crucial components contributing to postural control. Although the effects of Mulligan's mobilization with movement (MWM) on postural control, ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DFROM), and muscle strength in people with ankle disorders have previously been investigated, it is still unclear whether ankle MWM had ability to change postural control, DFROM, and muscle strength.
OBJECTIVES: To reveal pure effects of MWM on postural control, ankle DFROM, and muscle strength in healthy individuals.
DESIGN: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, sham-

Beta-blockers are used to treat cats with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). However, there are various hemodynamic responses to beta-blockers. This retrospective study aimed to explore the relationship between the response to carvedilol and the presence of geometric abnormalities. Medical records were reviewed for 16 cats diagnosed with HOCM. Cats were divided into two groups based on the velocity of the left-ventricular outflow-tract after carvedilol treatment (responder: eight cats, non-responder: eight cats). Baseline intergroup comparison revealed that anterior mitral valve l

PURPOSE: Previous ultrasound studies of clubfeet have mainly focused on the first year of life. The purpose of this study was to improve the evaluation of the talo-navicular and calcaneo-cuboid joints by adding new variables, evaluating the repeatability of ultrasound measurements for normal feet and clubfeet and establishing values for normal feet up to four years of age.
METHODS: A control group of 105 children divided into ten age groups, and 71 clubfeet in 46 children were examined. Four new variables were introduced: medial malleolus-Talar head-Navicular distance, medial tangent of the t

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus on the position of the knee joint while performing wound closure after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Further, there are no studies focusing on the association between early functional outcomes and different wound closure strategies. Therefore, we investigated the effects of tourniquet and knee position during wound closure on early recovery of range of motion (ROM) after primary TKA. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the influence of both tourniquet and knee position during wound closure in primary TKA.
METHODS: One hundred-twenty eligi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of age, gender and laterality on the intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MR imaging measurements of parotid glands in healthy participants at 3.0-T MRI.
METHODS: A total of 108 healthy participants were prospectively recruited. IVIM MRI scan was performed using a 3.0-T MR scanner, and corresponding parameters (perfusion fraction, f; pseudodiffusion coefficient, D*; tissue diffusivity, D) were derived from biexponential fitting of IVIM data. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to determine the association between the IVIM MRI parameters and age. The

BACKGROUND: Superior labral anterior-posterior (SLAP) tears are a common cause of shoulder pain and dysfunction in overhand throwers. Treatment outcomes remain unpredictable, with a large percentage of athletes unable to return to sport. There is considerable debate about the optimal treatment between debridement, repair, and tenodesis.
HYPOTHESIS: Labral repair more closely restores neuromuscular control and motion during the overhand pitch than tenodesis of the long head of the biceps.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Eighteen pitchers, including 7 uninjured controls, 6

OBJECT: There are little data on the effects of plated, or plate-only, open-door laminoplasty on cervical range of motion (ROM), neck pain, and clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to compare ROM after a plated laminoplasty in patients with ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) versus those with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and to correlate ROM with postoperative neck pain and neurological outcomes.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively compared patients with a diagnosis of cervical stenosis due to either OPLL or CSM who had been treated with plated lamino

STUDY DESIGN: A large-scale analysis of radiographical results of patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy and a review of the literature.
OBJECTIVE: To identify changes in sagittal alignment and range of motion (ROM) after cervical laminoplasty.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical laminoplasty is an effective procedure for decompressing multilevel spinal cord compression. It often induces postoperative complications such as loss of lordotic alignment and restriction of neck motion. Although numerous studies have reported the loss of flexion-extension ROM after laminoplasty, no large-s
