Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is an uncommon malignant lymphoma characterized by selective infiltration of the central and peripheral nervous system. In this case report, we present a patient diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who initially manifested with peripheral neuropathy, primarily characterized by weakness of the left lower limb. By exploring its clinical manifestations, ancillary tests, and reviewing the relevant literature, we aim to deepen our understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease. A 48-year-old male patient presented to the Department of Neurology, Hematology,

The innervation of the cervine testis was studied in 6 roe deers, 7 red deers and 14 fallow deers. The results for the three species are rather similar. With anti-sera to neurofilament (NF) and neuron specific enolase (NSE), all small and large nerve fascicles can be demonstrated, but single fibers are incompletely stained. Immunoreactions against protein gene product-9.5 (PGP-9.5) and GAP-43 (growth-associated protein-43) are better suited to depict the complete innervation pattern. Bundles of the superior spermatic and inferior spermatic nerves reach the testis via three access routes as fun

To evaluate the capability of magnetic resonance (MR) in imaging normal acoustic nerves, 12 volunteers without signs or symptoms of intracranial disease were examined using a 0.6 T superconductive system. Several spin-echo (SE) pulse sequences were tested to identify the optimal sequence for demonstration of the acoustic nerve bundle. Repetition times (TRs) varied from 300 to 2000 msec and echo times (TEs) from 30 to 120 msec. A single-slice technique was used with 5 and 8 mm sections, one or two data acquisitions per projection, and axial and coronal imaging. The normal acoustic nerves were d

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue reconstruction of the distal lower extremity and foot is challenging for reconstructive surgeons, and reconstruction options are limited. Although reverse sural artery flap (RSAF) is often used in such cases, the incidence of complications requiring treatment is 14%. To reduce the incidence of complications, we performed the double sural nerve branches (DSNB) technique, a modified RSAF incorporating the medial and lateral sural nerves and a fasciocutaneous pedicle.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series conducted at a single institution. In total, 22 patients wh

This study investigated the prevalence of embryonic and connective tissue elements in the filum terminale (FT) of patients with tethered cord syndrome (TCS), examining both typical and pathological histology. The FT specimens from 288 patients who underwent spinal cord detethering from 2013 to 2021 were analyzed. The histopathological examination involved routine hematoxylin and eosin staining and specific immunohistochemistry when needed. The patient details were extracted from electronic medical records. The study found that 97.6% of the FT specimens had peripheral nerves, and 70.8% had regu

Lipomatosis of the nerve (LN) commonly presents with neurologic dysfunction due to massive fibro-fatty enlargement of the peripheral nerves. It is uniquely associated with adipose proliferation in the subcutaneous tissue and muscle in the innervated territory, along with osseous abnormalities. Herein, we present the case of a 56-year-old woman who presented with severe right ulnar distribution pain involving the medial forearm and hand (9/10 on a numerical rating scale), declining right-hand strength, movement-dependent hypoesthesias, paresthesias, and a pronounced claw deformity of the right

The sympathetic nervous system is critical in maintaining the homeostasis of renal functions. However, its three-dimensional (3D) structures in the kidney have not been elucidated due to limitation of conventional imaging methods. CUBIC (Clear, Unobstructed Brain/Body Imaging Cocktails and Computational analysis) is a newly developed tissue-clearing technique, which enables whole-organ 3D imaging without thin-sectioning. Comprehensive 3D imaging by CUBIC found that sympathetic nerves are primarily distributed around arteries in the mouse kidney. Notably, the sympathetic innervation density was

The transverse carpal ligament (TCL) is a component of the flexor pulley system of the wrist, keeping the flexor tendons in place by resisting their volar displacement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vivo biomechanical interaction between the TCL and flexor tendons in response to tendon tensioning with the wrist at various postures. In eight healthy subjects, the flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons were tensioned by isometrically applying loads (5, 10, and 15N) to the index finger while the wrist posture was at 20° extension, neutral, 20° flexion, and 40°

PURPOSE: This study investigates the use of homodigital reverse dorsoradial flap with neurorrhaphy for thumb soft tissue defect.
METHODS: From 1996 to 2010, the homodigital dorsoradial flap was performed on seven adult patients and one 3-year-old boy. The flaps ranged from 1.2 to approximately 3.0 cm × 2.0 to approximately 4.2 cm in size. In six of the eight patients, the dorsal collateral branch of the radial nerve supplying the flap was also included in the pedicle and coapted to the proper digital nerves of the thumb. At final follow-ups, flap sensation, thumb motion, and donor-site morbid

Patients with cleft lip and palate usually present dental anomalies of number, shape, structure and position in the cleft area and the general dentist is frequently asked to restore or extract those teeth. Considering that several anatomic variations are expected in teeth adjacent to cleft areas and that knowledge of these variations by general dentists is required for optimal treatment, the objectives of this paper are: 1) to describe changes in the innervation pattern of anterior teeth and soft tissue caused by the presence of a cleft, 2) to describe a local anesthetic procedure in unilatera

A compartment syndrome is an increased tissue pressure within a closed osteofascial compartment. This compromises blood flow to the muscles and nerves within that compartment, which -if not treated adequately in an early stage-results in permanent tissue and nerve damage. It most frequently occurs in the lower leg, but can also occur elsewhere when muscles are enclosed in tight fascial compartments, such as the forearm and hand. In this report a patient is described who developed an acute compartment syndrome of the arm after a cable-wakeboard accident in which his arm was strangulated. Cable-

To investigate whether prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) stimulates the release of tachykinins and whether the tachykinins play a role in the PGF2 alpha-induced bronchial contraction, we examined the contractile response to PGF2 alpha in the presence or absence of a neutral endopeptidase (NEP) inhibitor phosphoramidon in the guinea pig main bronchus in vitro. Because NEP effectively cleaves tachykinins, we hypothesized that the inhibition of NEP would enhance a PGF2 alpha-induced bronchial contraction if PGF2 alpha stimulates the release of tachykinins. Phosphoramidon significantly enhanced

The expression pattern of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) in the developing neural tube of mouse is reported. Homogeneous AP activity in the neuroepithelium becomes prominent at E8.5. At E9.5, distinctly AP-positive cells appear in the brain and spinal cord area. At stages E10.5 to E12.5, AP positivity is observed between the mesencephalon and the rhombencephalon, along the entire spinal cord and cranial nerves emerging from the myelencephalon. At E13.5, strongly AP positive fibers become prominent in the pons. At E14.5, AP expression in brain tissue is considerably reduced and

In Sprague-Dawley rats, we attempted to develop an experimental model to stimulate the cardiac sympathetic nerve. After transverse thoracotomy under anesthesia, a miniature, bipolar electrode was placed on the right ansa subclavia and it was stimulated electrically. The nerve stimulation at 2, 4, and 8.3 Hz (2 ms in duration, 5 V) increased heart rate by 21.2 +/- 4.19, 34.2 +/- 5.33, and 47.8 +/- 9.25 beats min-1, respectively (p < 0.05). Tetrodotoxin abolished the chronotropic response evoked by nerve stimulation at 4 Hz (p < 0.05). The beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist propranolol abolishe

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is often accompanied by vascular network damage, causing transient hypoxia in the peripheral nerve microenvironment, and leading to severe functional impairment or loss of motor and sensory functions. Thus, constructing nerve graft conduits (NGCs) with oxygen-releasing function is expected to improve the hypoxic microenvironment, promote angiogenesis and repair of injured nerves. In this study, an ovalbumin (OVA) oxygen-releasing electrospun scaffold was constructed by incorporating calcium peroxide (CPO) nanoparticles into OVA solution via electrospinning. The re

The interaction between muscle-derived factors and ethanol on cholinergic neuronal expression was studied in the chick embryo during early neuroembryogenesis using choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) as cholinergic neuronal marker. Ethanol (10 mg/50 microliters) and limb muscle extract (130 micrograms protein/50 microliters) (LME) were administered in ovo either alone or concomitantly at embryonic days 1-3 (E1-E3); or ethanol was given E1-E3 and followed by LME at E4-E7. All groups were sacrificed at embryonic day 8 (E8) and ChAT activity was assayed in homogenates of whole brain and of spinal co

Introduction: Myosin proteins interact with filamentous actin and translate the chemical energy generated by ATP hydrolysis into a wide variety of mechanical functions in all cell types. The classic function of conventional myosins is mediation of muscle contraction, but myosins also participate in processes as diverse as exocytosis/endocytosis, membrane remodeling, and cytokinesis. Myosin 5a (Myo5a) is an unconventional motor protein well-suited to the processive transport of diverse molecular cargo within cells and interactions with multiprotein membrane complexes that facilitate exocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Current methods to repair ablation-type peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) using peripheral nerve allografts (PNAs) often result in poor functional recovery due to immunological rejection as well as to slow and inaccurate outgrowth of regenerating axonal sprouts. In contrast, ablation-type PNIs repaired by PNAs, using a multistep protocol in which one step employs the membrane fusogen polyethylene glycol (PEG), permanently restore sciatic-mediated behaviors within weeks. Axons and cells within PEG-fused PNAs remain viable, even though outbred host and donor tissues are neither immuno
