This article presents the results of a case--control study regarding the background to handball injuries among players of 12 years and older. Data were collected by means of a written questionnaire on the nature, location and direct causes of the injuries as well as information on risk factors. Injured players (n = 130) are compared with non-injured players (n = 512). The response for the cases was 67% and for the controls 75%. The relation between symptomatic cholelithiasis in women under 30 years of age and pregnancy, obesity and oral contraceptive use was retrospectively studied. A total of 885 cholecystectomies were carried out in an English district hospital. In the age group under 30 years the female-male ratio was 9.7:1 vs 2.3:I in the total group (p less than 0.01). Prevalence and incidence of HIV were studied in two cohorts of homosexual men in Amsterdam between 1980 and 1987. The cumulative incidence of HIV infection increased from a weighted 2.2% in 1980 to 39% in 1987. In that year the observed incidence was less than 1%. The estimated annual HIV incidence was 3% in 1981, rose to 8.8% in 1984 and decreased gradually to 0% in 1987. This decline was assumed to be linked to a strong reduction of high risk sexual behaviour among the men under study.

In the days after the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl (USSR) in April 1986, the Dutch Poison Control Center had to answer questions concerning possible health effects caused by (over)exposure to ionizing radiation. These questions were similar to questions asked regarding exposure to toxic agents after chemical accidents. It is obvious that the experience and practical approach of a Poison Control Center in handling toxicological problems can be used in problems concerning ionizing radiation.

4 cases of contact allergy to diazolidinyl urea (Germall II) in a "hypoallergenic" brand of cosmetics are described. 2 patients sensitized by these cosmetics were not allergic to formaldehyde. 2 other patients already sensitive to formaldehyde had exacerbations of dermatitis due to diazolidinyl urea.
