Prefrontal connectivity alterations and oscillatory dynamics in cannabis use disorder.

Long-term cannabis use can result in the development of cannabis use disorder (CUD) and dependence via the endocannabinoid system pathway. A brain network that has been consistently linked to various stages of addiction and various substances is the default mode network (DMN). By comparing EEG features between cannabis users and healthy participants, this study sought to identify EEG-based markers in altered DMN function. A resting-state EEG recording was conducted with 23 CUD participants and 23 healthy participants for five minutes with their eyes open and closed. Data were analyzed using po

Chronic stress, cortisol dysregulation, and neurodegenerative vulnerability: mechanistic pathways linking HPA-axis dysfunction to Alzheimer's disease risk.

Chronic psychological stress is increasingly recognized as a silent risk factor of long-term brain vulnerability and a potential modifier of neurodegenerative disease trajectories. The persistent activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the consequent dysregulation of cortisol exert extensive influences on neural, immune, and metabolic pathways linked to cognitive decline and dementia. This review synthesizes current mechanistic and clinical evidence concerning the effects of chronic stress-induced HPA-axis dysfunction on neurodegenerative susceptibility and Alzheimer's

Mercury chloride exposure disrupts placental function and embryonic methionine metabolism leading to neural tube defects in ICR mice.

The aim of the study was to explore the precise mechanisms involved in maternal mercury exposure induced neural tube defects (NTDs). We established a mouse model of mercury chloride (HgCl2)-induced embryo NTDs using ICR mice, and investigated the roles of amino acid transport and associated methionine metabolic disorders in the placenta and fetus. Oral administration of 0, 1.5, 3, and 4.5 mg/kg/d HgCl2 to pregnant ICR mice was performed between gestation days 5.5 and 9.5, with assessments conducted on gestation day 10.5. The incidence of NTDs was significantly elevated in the 3 mg/kg/d group w

Re-experiencing trauma: Occipital lobe resting-state functional connectivity in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Re-experiencing symptoms in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often involve vivid visual imagery, yet occipital resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) remains understudied, particularly in women exposed to interpersonal violence. Clarifying these neural mechanisms may advance understanding of sensory and contextual processing disturbances that contribute to intrusive memories. Notably, occipital rsFC has not been evaluated in relation to re-experiencing using the Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale (PDS), a validated self-report measure that supports fine-grained symptom-level analy

Voice-Based Detection of Parkinson's Disease Using Machine and Deep Learning Approaches: A Systematic Review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, among which vocal impairment is one of the earliest and most prevalent. In recent years, voice analysis supported by machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) has emerged as a promising non-invasive method for early PD detection. We conducted a systematic review searching PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science databases for studies published between 2020 and September 2025. A total of 69 studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in terms of dataset characte

The power of pain: The temporal-spatial dynamics of empathy induced by body gestures and facial expressions.

Two non-verbal pain representations, body gestures and facial expressions, can communicate pain to others and elicit our own empathic responses. However, the specific impact of these representations on neural responses of empathy, particularly in terms of temporal and spatial neural mechanisms, remains unclear. To address this issue, the present study developed a kinetic pain empathy paradigm comprising short animated videos depicting a protagonist's "real life" pain and no-pain experiences through body gestures and facial expressions. Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings were conducted on

Comparative Analysis of Deep Neural Networks for Automated Ulcerative Colitis Severity Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by continuous inflammation of the colon and rectum. Accurate disease assessment is essential for effective treatment, with endoscopic evaluation, particularly the Mayo Endoscopic Score (MES), serving as a key diagnostic tool. However, MES measurement can be subjective and inconsistent, leading to variability in treatment decisions. Deep learning approaches have shown promise in providing more objective and standardized assessments of UC severity. METHODS: This study utilized publicly available endoscopic

F-box/LRR-repeat protein 12 reorchestrated microglia to inhibit scarring and achieve adult spinal cord injury repair.

Scarring is an insurmountable obstacle for axonal regeneration in recovery from spinal cord injury (SCI). It impedes the repair effects of therapeutic targets in cortical neurons, such as PTEN-/- and hyper-IL-6, which cannot break through dense scar barriers to reconstruct neural circuits. However, methods for eliminating this process remain elusive. Here, we conducted a multiomics analysis of SCI and identified FBXL12 as an effective target for inhibiting scarring, further promoting spontaneous crossing of axons at the epicenter. We identified N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) modification as the pred

Neglect and Neurodevelopment: A Narrative Review Understanding the Link Between Child Neglect and Executive Function Deficits.

Background: Childhood neglect is a pervasive yet often overlooked form of maltreatment that exerts profound and lasting effects on neurodevelopment. Unlike other types of abuse, neglect is characterized by the absence of essential stimuli and caregiving, which are critical for normal brain maturation, particularly in regions involved in executive function. Objective: This narrative review aims to critically explore the neurobiological mechanisms through which early-life neglect impairs the development of executive functions. Special emphasis is placed on alterations in brain structure and func

Risk factors of the appearance of anencephaly in Tunisia.

INTRODUCTION: Anencephaly is a serious developmental defect of the central nervous system in which the brain and cranial vault are grossly malformed. The cerebrum and cerebellum are reduced or absent, but the hindbrain is present. Anencephaly is a part of the neural tube defect spectrum. This defect results when the neural tube fails to close during the third to fourth weeks of development, leading to fetal loss, stillbirth, or neonatal death. AIM: To find out probable principal risk factors for the appearance of anencephaly. METHODS: This study was conducted to compare between pregnancies a

Giant retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma with lumbar nerve root involvement in a child: a case report and a systematic review of literature.

Background Giant retroperitoneal ganglioneuromas (GNs) with lumbar nerve root involvement are extremely rare in children and pose significant diagnostic and surgical challenges. GNs are benign tumors of neural crest origin that can occasionally grow to a considerable size and extend from the spinal canal into the retroperitoneum, mimicking more aggressive lesions. Methods We present a case of a 12-year-old boy with a giant GN arising from the right L4–L5 neural foramen and extending into the psoas muscle and anterior abdominal wall. Preoperative imaging revealed a large, well-defined, dumbbell

The vmPFC-IPL functional connectivity as the neural basis of future self-continuity impacted procrastination: the mediating role of anticipated positive outcomes.

Procrastination is universally acknowledged as a problematic behavior with wide-ranging consequences impacting various facets of individuals' lives, including academic achievement, social accomplishments, and mental health. Although previous research has indicated that future self-continuity is robustly negatively correlated with procrastination, it remains unknown about the neural mechanisms underlying the impact of future self-continuity on procrastination. To address this issue, we employed a free construction approach to collect individuals' episodic future thinking (EFT) thoughts regardin

Integrated Analysis of Clinical Outcome of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-related Genes in Pan-cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although the application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in engineered medicine, such as tissue regeneration, is well known, new evidence is emerging that shows that MSCs can also promote cancer progression, metastasis, and drug resistance. However, no large-scale cohort analysis of MSCs has been conducted to reveal their impact on the prognosis of cancer patients. OBJECTIVES: We propose the MSC score as a novel surrogate for poor prognosis in pan-cancer. METHODS: We used single sample gene set enrichment analysis to quantify MSC-related genes into a signature score and identify

Transformation but not generation of motor images is disrupted following stimulation over the left inferior parietal lobe.

Motor imagery (MI) involves the generation, maintenance, and transformation of motor images; yet, the neural underpinnings of each stage are not well understood. Here, we investigated the role of the left inferior parietal lobe (IPL) in the stages of MI. Healthy participants (N = 20) engaged in a MI task (making judgments about hands presented on a screen; hand laterality judgment task) over two days. Past literature demonstrates the mental rotation of hands in this task involves implicit MI (i.e., where MI occurs spontaneously in the absence of explicit instructions). During the task, active
