Artificial intelligence exceeds humans in epidemiological job coding.

BACKGROUND: Work circumstances can substantially negatively impact health. To explore this, large occupational cohorts of free-text job descriptions are manually coded and linked to exposure. Although several automatic coding tools have been developed, accurate exposure assessment is only feasible with human intervention. METHODS: We developed OPERAS, a customizable decision support system for epidemiological job coding. Using 812,522 entries, we developed and tested classification models for the Professions et Catégories Socioprofessionnelles (PCS)2003, Nomenclature d'Activités Française (NA

Weekday and weekend physical activity patterns and their correlates among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Accelerometers enable assessment of within and between day variation in physical activity. The main aim was to examine weekday and weekend physical activity patterns among young adults. Additionally, correlates of the physical activity patterns were examined. METHODS: Overall 325 adults (mean age 26.0 years, standard deviation 0.03) from the Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project used a wrist-worn ActiGraph accelerometer continuously for 1 week. Physical activity patterns over weekdays and weekends were identified by using the group-based trajectory modeling. Adol

Risks for adverse pregnancy outcomes and infections in daycare workers: an overview of current epidemiological evidence and implications for primary prevention.

Childcare providers are overwhelmingly women of childbearing age. Occupational risks in this sector include exposure to biological (infectious) or physical (standing, carrying loads) hazards, many of which are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as children with congenital infections, low birth weight or prematurity. Here, the authors examined literature on pregnancy outcomes and infectious hazards related to employment in daycare settings. Overall, 33 original studies (10 reporting pregnancy issues, 23 focusing on infectious risks) published in 1980-2018 were retained following a

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and lens opacity in interventional cardiologists.

OBJECTIVES: Interventional cardiologists (ICs) are occupationally exposed to low or moderate doses of ionizing radiation from repeated exposures. It is not clear whether these occupational conditions may affect their eye lens. Therefore, the risk of radiation-induced cataract in the cohort of Polish interventional cardiologists is analyzed in this paper. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 69 interventional cardiologists and 78 control individuals occupationally unexposed to ionizing radiation. The eye lens opacities were examined using a slit camera and evaluated with Lens Opa

An original pharmacoepidemiological-pharmacodynamic method: application to antipsychotic-induced movement disorders.

AIMS: Pharmacovigilance databases are usually used to detect new potential signals that are relevant for drug safety. They are seldom used for explanatory purposes, e.g. to understand the mechanisms of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The aim of the present study was to combine pharmacovigilance and pharmacodynamic data to investigate the association between dopamine D2, serotonin 5HT2A, and muscarinic M1 receptor occupancy and the risks of antipsychotic drug (AP)-induced movement disorders. METHODS: First, we performed a case-noncase analysis using spontaneous reports from the World Health Org

Mild cerebral ventriculomegaly in fetuses: characteristics and outcome.

OBJECTIVES: Ionizing radiation was known to cause disruption of cytoskeleton. However, the disorganization of the cytoskeleton leads to form microparticles (MP) that carry membrane and cytoplasmic constituents from their parent cells they are released from. Therefore, authors investigated the effect of the occupational exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation on MP levels. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The current study was conducted on 38 healthy medical workers occupationally exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation and 29 controls matched by gender, age, and smoking habits. The MP levels meas

The links between agriculture and health: an intersectoral opportunity to improve the health and livelihoods of the poor.

Agriculture and health are linked in many ways. First, agriculture is essential for good health: it produces the world's food, fibre and materials for shelter; in many countries it is also an important source of livelihood among the poor. At the same time, agriculture can be linked with poor health, including malnutrition, malaria, foodborne illnesses, human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), livestock-related diseases, chronic diseases and occupational ill-health. Health also affects agriculture: people's health status influences the demand for agricultural

Forecasting COVID-19, influenza, and RSV hospitalizations over winter 2023-4 in England.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal respiratory viruses cause substantial pressure on healthcare systems, particularly over winter. System managers can mitigate the impact on patient care when they anticipate hospital admissions due to these viruses. Hospitalization forecasts were used widely during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Now, resurgent seasonal respiratory pathogens add complexity to system planning. We describe how a suite of forecasts for respiratory pathogens, embedded in national and regional decision-making structures, were used to mitigate the impact on hospital systems and patient care. METHODS: W

Dwellings occupied by mobility-limited older people emerge as strong control centers and more age-friendly places.

The future will witness the substantial worldwide growth of older people with functional limitations or disabilities who have difficulties leaving their dwellings and traveling to their neighborhoods or other community destinations to realize their obligatory and discretionary needs and goals. This commentary offers conceptual arguments and literature findings proposing that the dwellings of this vulnerable population deserve new scrutiny because they have become more salient and positively experienced places to live where their occupants can maintain their independence and age in place. Application of Pattern Mining Methods to Assess Exposures to Multiple Airborne Chemical Agents in Two Large Occupational Exposure Databases from France.

Surveys of the French working population estimate that approximately 15% of all workers may be exposed to at least three different chemical agents, but the most prevalent coexposure situations and their associated health risks remain relatively understudied. To characterize occupational coexposure situations in France, we extracted personal measurement data from COLCHIC and SCOLA, two large administrative occupation exposure databases. We selected 118 chemical agents that had ≥100 measurements with detected concentrations over the period 2010-2019, including 31 carcinogens (IARC groups 1, 2A,
