The authors describe central and peripapillary chorioretinal dystrophies seen in 3 patients. In 2 of them a crystalline chorioretinal dystrophy was found. This is compared to the "simple" chorioretinal dystrophy of the third patient. Crystalline deposits in the limbus corneae were found in both patients with crystalline chorioretinopathy. Higher serum cholesterol levels and more widespread chorioretinal dystrophy are associated with greater corneal involvement. PURPOSE: To present results of experience with the authors" technique for intrascleral fixation of intraocular lenses for the correction of aphakia in the absence of capsular support.
METHODS: Eleven patients (four children and seven adults) underwent surgery with the use of the method proposed by the authors (11 operations). The patients ranged in age from 11 to 75 years. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of 20 pseudophakic retinal detachment (RD) patients (20 eyes) and 17 aphakic RD patients (17 eyes). Seventy-six consecutive patients with total rhegmatogenous retinal detachments and severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy underwent combined pars plana vitrectomy, lensectomy, panretinal photocoagulation, perfluoropropane gas (C3F8)/fluid exchange, and scleral buckling.
