Association of kidney disease index with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among individuals with hypertension.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the association between a novel kidney disease index (KDI), which combines information from both estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR), and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among individuals with hypertension. METHODS: We analyzed data from 19 988 adults with hypertension who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2018. Mortality outcomes were determined by linking to National Death Index records through December 31, 2019. Cox proporti

Mental health therapy for veterans with PTSD as a family affair: A qualitative inquiry into how family support and social norms influence veteran engagement in care.

Social support is important for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) recovery and emerging literature indicate that social support could increase engagement in PTSD therapy. However, there is a need to understand how and why family involvement can increase treatment engagement to inform strategies used in clinical practice. This study explores how individuals with PTSD and family members of individuals with PTSD experience therapy and how social interactions help or hinder therapy engagement. We interviewed 18 U.S. military veterans who had been referred for psychotherapy for PTSD in the Veter

Evaluation of mental disorder with prioritization of its type by utilizing the bipolar complex fuzzy decision-making approach based on Schweizer-Sklar prioritized aggregation operators.

A clinically important loss in a person's understanding, emotive power, or conduct is a symptom of a mental disorder. It generally occurs for genetic, psychological, and/or cognitive reasons and is accompanied by discomfort or limitationin significant functional areas. It can be handled using techniques similar to those used to treat chronic conditions (i.e., precautions, examination, medication, and recovery). Mental diseases take a variety of forms. Mental disorder is also identified as mental illness. The latter is a more usual phrase that incorporates psychological problems, psychosocial d

Why Do Patients Choose Skilled Nursing Facilities After Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Current research indicates that total joint arthroplasty patients who are discharged to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) have higher complication rates as compared to home. Many factors like age, sex, race, Medicare status, and past medical history have been shown to influence discharge destination. The present study sought to gather patient-indicated reasons for SNF discharge and identify potentially modifiable factors influencing the decision. METHODS: Primary total joint arthroplasty patients were asked to complete surveys at their presurgical and 2-week postsurgical follow-up

Posttraumatic Growth in U.S. Military Veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

Despite increasing recognition that positive psychological changes or posttraumatic growth (PTG) may develop after highly stressful or traumatic events, contemporary population-based data on the epidemiology of PTG in high-risk samples such as U.S. military veterans are lacking. Additionally, in light of emerging evidence suggesting an 8-factor model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, an up-to-date characterization of how these symptom clusters relate to PTG can help inform efforts to help promote PTG. Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veter

Comprehensive profiling of pre-infection antibodies identifies HIV targets associated with viremic control and viral load.

BACKGROUND: High HIV viral load (VL) is associated with increased transmission risk and faster disease progression. HIV controllers achieve viral suppression without antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. We evaluated viremic control in a community-randomized trial with >48,000 participants. METHODS: A massively multiplexed antibody profiling system, VirScan, was used to quantify pre- and post-infection antibody reactivity to HIV peptides in 664 samples from 429 participants (13 controllers, 135 viremic non-controllers, 64 other non-controllers, 217 uninfected persons). Controllers had VLs <2,000 co

The role of mental health and substance use disorders on the relation of migraine with self-directed violence among women in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Migraine disproportionately affects women of reproductive age, and is associated with self-directed violence (SDV) which confers substantial risk for suicides. Mental health disorders (MHD) and substance use disorders (SUD) are higher among persons with migraines. However, there's limited information on the influence of these conditions on SDV among women. We evaluated the interplay of MHD and SUD on the relation of migraine with SDV among US women. METHODS: We analyzed data from 96 million hospitalizations among women aged 15-49 years from the National Inpatient Sample (2004-2015
