Accelerated brain aging as a transdiagnostic biomarker: A lifespan MRI brain age study across seven disorders.

BACKGROUND: Accelerated brain aging has been associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders; however, findings remain inconsistent due to limited lifespan modeling and inadequate age-bias correction. This study aimed to establish normative brain-aging trajectories across the lifespan and quantify disorder-specific deviations in brain-predicted age difference (brain-PAD) in a large, age-diverse sample. METHODS: Brain-age models were trained on structural MRI data from 25,425 healthy individuals (aged 2-95 years) and validated in 270 independent cross-sectional and 188 longitudinal particip

American tertiary clinic-referred bipolar II disorder compared to bipolar I disorder: More severe in multiple ways, but less severe in a few other ways.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence and relative severity of bipolar II disorder (BDII) vs. bipolar I disorder (BDI) are controversial. METHODS: Prevalence, demographics, and illness characteristics were compared among 260 BDII and 243 BDI outpatients referred to the Stanford University BD Clinic and assessed with the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder Affective Disorders Evaluation. RESULTS: BDII vs. BDI outpatients had statistically similar prevalence (51.7% vs. 48.3%), and in multiple ways had more severe illness, having significantly more often: lifetime comorbid anxiety (7

Individualized targeting of the posterior parietal cortex with intermittent theta burst stimulation in anorexia nervosa: a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled protocol.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder frequently marked by poor treatment response and chronic progression toward rigid, restrictive behaviors. These features highlight the need for innovative strategies targeting core mechanisms and symptoms of the disorder. This feasibility trial evaluates individualized intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) as an adjunct to treatment-as-usual, with the goal of identifying patient-specific targets and paving the way for personalized neuromodulation in AN. METHODS: Thirty-four adults w

Understanding the Relevance of Psychopathological Features in Pets-Owner Relationship: State of the Art and Future Directions - A Narrative Review.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing attention on the correlation between pet-ownership and mental health or well-being in general population and those affected by psychiatric and cognitive disorders is currently arising. It has been proposed that emotional attachment to pets moderates the relationship between pet-ownership and mental health. Most data highlight the benefits that pet-owner relationships may lead to the individual. Notwithstanding, there are evidence of presence of some psychological features in pets' owners that may belong to several psychopathological spectra. These features may have import

Pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder and risk of diabetes mellitus: A nationwide study of 30,451 patients.

OBJECTIVE: While treatment with antipsychotics and antiepileptics have been associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), lithium may have the opposite effect via inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase-3. The aim of this study was to investigate whether treatment of bipolar disorder with lithium, antipsychotics, or antiepileptics is associated with the risk of DM in a real-world clinical setting. METHODS: Using nationwide registers, we identified all patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder in Danish Psychiatric Services from January 1, 1996, to January 1, 2019 (N = 30,451). Th

New-onset autoimmunity in people living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prior observational studies suggested an association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and autoimmune disorders; however, a comprehensive evaluation of this relationship remains limited. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, using the TriNetX global network, individuals newly diagnosed with chronic PTSD without autoimmune disease at baseline were propensity-score-matched to individuals without PTSD (2005-2025). Matching included age, sex, race, ethnicity, obesity, smoking, and psychiatric comorbidities variables. Cox models estimated the risk of 32 new-onset aut

Limbic-Sensorimotor Tug of War for the Hippocampus: Dynamic Functional Connectivity as a Transdiagnostic Vulnerability Marker in Offspring of Patients With Emotion Dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation (ED) is a key transdiagnostic symptom in several psychiatric disorders such as borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. These disorders, defined herein as ED disorders (EDDs), share similarities in symptoms, comorbidity, and heritability, emphasizing the importance of a transdiagnostic approach to identify markers of vulnerability to EDDs in high-risk populations, such as the offspring of patients with an EDD (EDDoff). The hippocampus, central to ED, exhibits alterations across EDDs. METHODS: We used a s

Assortative mating and parental genetic relatedness drive the pathogenicity of variably expressive variants.

We examined more than 38,000 spouse pairs from four neurodevelopmental disease cohorts and the UK Biobank to identify phenotypic and genetic patterns in parents associated with neurodevelopmental disease risk in children. We identified correlations between six phenotypes in parents and children, including correlations of clinical diagnoses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (R=0.31-0.49, p<0.001), and two measures of sub-clinical autism features in parents affecting several autism severity measures in children, such as bi-parental mean Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) scores affecting prob

Association between parental mental illness and autoimmune diseases in the offspring - A nationwide register-based cohort study in Sweden.

Mental illness has been previously linked with autoimmune diseases, yet the associations between parental mental illness and offspring's risk of autoimmune diseases is largely unknown. We conducted a population-based cohort study of 2,192,490 Swedish children born between 1991 and 2011 and their parents to determine the associations between parental mental illness and risk of autoimmune diseases among the offspring. Time-dependent diagnoses of parental mental illness (psychosis, alcohol/drug misuse, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity d

[What nosographic framework for excessive tanning?].

BACKGROUND: Socially valorised tanning, like other forms of behaviour, can take on an addictive aspect. Excessive tanning, defined by the presence of impulsivity and repetition of tanning that leads to personal distress, is a psychiatric disorder that has only recently been recognized. This finding is based on the observations of many dermatologists who report an addictive relationship in their patients with tanning cabins despite announcement of the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. OBJECTIVE: This article attempts to synthesize the existing literature on excessive tanning and addiction to in

Lives in isolation: stories and struggles of low-income African American women with panic disorder.

Research evidence points to the existence of racial-ethnic disparities in both access to and quality of mental health services for African Americans with panic disorder. Current panic disorder evaluation and treatment paradigms are not responsive to the needs of many African Americans. The primary individual, social, and health-care system factors that limit African Americans' access to care and response to treatment are not well understood. Low-income African American women with panic disorder participated in a series of focus-group sessions designed to elicit (1) their perspectives regarding

A replication study using the World Health Organization pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase®) to evaluate whether an association between ketamine and esketamine and alcohol and substance misuse exists.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ketamine and esketamine are increasingly prescribed in the treatment of resistant mood disorders and persons at risk of suicide. Ketamine is a drug of misuse with increasing non-therapeutic use in the general population. Herein, our aim was to determine whether ketamine and/or esketamine are disproportionately associated with reports of substance and/or alcohol misuse. METHODS: Replicating a similar analysis recently conducted using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, we identified cases of "alcohol problem, alcoholism,

Association between recent cancer and suicide: Danish national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Being diagnosed with cancer can be stressful and has been linked to suicide. However, an updated analyses where a wide range of cancers are compared is lacking. AIMS: To examine whether individuals first-time diagnosed with cancer within the past 5 years had higher suicide rates than those with no such diagnosis. Associations with time since diagnosis, and stage and site of cancer, were analysed. METHOD: A population-based cohort study design applied to nationwide, longitudinal data on all persons aged 15 years or above (N = 6 987 998) and living in Denmark between 2000 and 2021.

Psychological characteristics of chronic depression: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the importance of psychological characteristics for chronicity of depression. Knowledge about psychological differences between chronically depressed persons and nonchronically depressed persons may help to improve treatment of chronic depression. This is the first study to simultaneously compare in large samples various psychological characteristics between chronically depressed and nonchronically depressed adults. METHOD: Baseline data were drawn from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), an ongoing longitudinal cohort study aimed

An open study of the effectiveness of Internet treatment for panic disorder delivered in a psychiatric setting.

Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PD/A) is common and can be treated effectively with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication or cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT). However, the lack of access to CBT services has motivated the development of self-help approaches requiring less therapist contact. A novel treatment modality in this field, showing efficacy in several randomized trials but until now not evaluated within the context of regular psychiatric care, is Internet-based treatment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Internet-based CBT
