Impact of chronic diseases on the periapical health of endodontically treated teeth: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Systemic diseases affecting the immune system can influence the body's response time to endodontic treatment, potentially necessitating a longer duration for the complete resolution of existing infections when compared to healthy controls. This systematic review aims to evaluate the association between the presence of chronic diseases and periapical status after endodontic treatment through a systematic and comprehensive assessment of existing literature on this topic. The search strategy covered seven electronic databases and grey literature, encompassing articles published until October 2023

Promises and challenges of genomic newborn screening (NBS) - lessons from public health NBS programs.

Newborn screening (NBS) in the United States began in the 1960s to detect inborn errors of metabolism that benefited from presymptomatic treatment compared with treatment after the development of symptoms and diagnosis. Over time, it expanded to include endocrinological disorders, hematological disorders, immunodeficiencies, and other treatable diseases such as lysosomal storage diseases (LSD), cystic fibrosis, X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, and spinal muscular dystrophy. This expansion has been driven by new technologies (e.g., tandem mass spectrometry) and novel treatments (e.g., enzyme repl

Vitamin D prophylaxis in persons with epilepsy?

Limited guidelines exist regarding osteoporosis prevention in the general population. Despite being a subject of controversy, the majority of research suggests that decreased vitamin D levels correlate with increased bone turnover, that is, an important risk factor for osteoporosis development. In most guidelines, daily vitamin D supplementation is recommended. In persons with epilepsy (PWE), the situation is more complex, as other factors can increase the chance of being vitamin D deficient. Currently, there are no internationally accepted guidelines regarding monitoring bone health in PWE. O

Ultraviolet radiation and the anterior eye.

The eye is on the one hand dependent on visible light energy and on the other hand can be damaged by these and the contiguous ultraviolet (UV) and infrared wavelengths. Diseases of the eye in which sunlight has been implicated have been termed the ophthalmohelioses, and these conditions pose a significant problem to the eye health of many communities. The ophthalmohelioses have a tremendous impact on patients' quality of life and have significant implications on the cost of health care. Although cataract is not entirely caused by insolation, it now seems certain that sunlight plays a contribut

Health protocol for translocation of free-ranging elk.

When considering an elk (Cervus elaphus) restoration program, wildlife managers must evaluate the positive and negative elements of translocation. We prepared this protocol to give an overview of health considerations associated with translocation of elk, with an emphasis on movement of free-ranging elk from western North America to the southeastern USA. We evaluated infectious agents and ectoparasites reported in elk from two perspectives. First, we made a qualitative estimate of the ability of the agent to be introduced and to become established. This was done using a selected set of epidemi

Understanding the bigger picture: syndemic interactions of the immigrant and refugee context with the lived experience of diabetes and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Providing contextually appropriate care and interventions for people with diabetes and/or obesity in vulnerable situations within ethnocultural newcomer communities presents significant challenges. Because of the added complexities of the refugee and immigrant context, a deep understanding of their realities is needed. Syndemic theory sheds light on the synergistic nature of stressors, chronic diseases and environmental impact on immigrant and refugee populations living in vulnerable conditions. We used a syndemic perspective to examine how the migrant ethnocultural context impacts

Uncovering the role of preventive health services utilization in protecting older adults from heat-related depressive risks.

BACKGROUND: Research on extreme heat has predominantly focused on acute heatwaves, obscuring the mental health risks of cumulative heat exposure for aging populations. As a proactive public health intervention, preventive health services represent a critical but underexamined dimension of community resilience to climate-related health risks. This study examines the relationships between cumulative heat exposure and depressive symptoms among older adults and explores whether preventive health services utilization attenuates this risk. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 7,464 older adu
