Practices and Perceptions of Animal Contact and Associated Health Outcomes in Pregnant Women and New Mothers.

Companion animals play an important role in our society. However, pregnant women and new mothers might have specific concerns about animal-associated health outcomes because of their altered immune function and posture as well as their newborn babies. The study was conducted to collect baseline data for developing an evidence-based intervention for pregnant women and new mothers to help them adopt certain behaviors to prevent adverse animal-associated health outcomes. A survey, using the Health Belief Model as the theoretical framework, was developed and administered to 326 women attending the

An Assessment of the Provision of Vaping Products by UK Stop Smoking Services Using Data From Freedom of Information Requests.

Introduction Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease and arises due to prolonged and repeated inhalational exposure to chemical toxicants found in cigarette smoke. Within this context, vaping products, also termed e‑cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems, have been positioned by public health bodies as being substantially less harmful than combustible cigarettes. Furthermore, evidence also suggests that vaping products may be more effective in supporting smoking cessation than traditional support such as nicotine replacement therapy. The UK National

Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes With Verapamil Compared With Other Calcium Channel Blockers.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence that the calcium channel blocker (CCB) verapamil slows type 1 diabetes progression suggests possible preventive benefits among people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We compared type 2 diabetes incidence between users of verapamil versus other CCBs in a population-based cohort. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: From a random sample of Australians in national subsidized health care databases, we identified 90,026 individuals who initiated treatment with a CCB (at least two supplies) between July 2003 and December 2014. Incident diabetes was captured by subsequent receipt

Maternal high-care and intensive care units in low- and middle-income countries.

Despite notable advancements in minimizing maternal mortality during recent decades, a pronounced disparity persists between high-income nations and low-to middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in intensive and high-care for pregnant and postpartum individuals. This divergence is multifactorial and influenced by factors such as the availability and accessibility of community-based maternity healthcare services, the quality of preventive care, timeliness in accessing hospital or critical care, resource availability, and facilities equipped for advanced interventions. Complications from

Time-to-completion of COVID-19 vaccination primary series varies by HIV viral load status among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, Maryland.

People who inject drugs (PWID) may have diminished access to essential preventive services like COVID-19 vaccination given structural and substance use barriers. We aimed to assess the role of HIV on COVID-19 vaccination uptake among adult PWID participating in the ALIVE cohort study in Baltimore, Maryland who were alive as of April 2021. We abstracted COVID-19 vaccination data from electronic medical records via the regional health information exchange. We used Kaplan-Meier method to estimate time from universal vaccine eligibility (April 6, 2021) to completion of the COVID-19 vaccination pri

Clinical counseling on sun protection and indoor tanning avoidance: A survey of current practices among U.S. health care providers.

Clinicians can play a role in skin cancer prevention by counseling their patients on use of sun protection and indoor tanning avoidance. We used data from the 2016 DocStyles, a web-based survey of U.S. primary care providers, to examine skin cancer prevention counseling practices among 1506 providers. In 2018, we conducted logistic regression analyses to examine factors associated with regularly providing counseling. Almost half (48.5%) of all providers reported regularly counseling on sun protection, and 27.4% reported regularly counseling on indoor tanning. Provider characteristics associate

Hyperlipidemia: Drugs for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Adults.

Guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) and the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) indicate that lipid-lowering drugs have benefit for primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events. The evidence is strongest for statins. ACC/AHA, NICE, and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines recommend statin therapy based on patients' risk of an ASCVD event, rather than treating to specific lipid levels. For patients with no previous ASCVD event, risk calculators should be

Compliance with USPSTF recommendations on aspirin for prevention of cardiovascular disease in men.

OBJECTIVE: In 2009, United States Preventive Services Taskforce (USPSTF) recommends aspirin (ASA) for men aged 45-79 years when the benefit of coronary artery disease (CAD) risk reduction outweighs the harm of gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Our objective is to evaluate compliance with this USPSTF recommendation. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional study and 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset was used for this study. Out of the available sample, 1155 (11.8%) had the inclusion criteria (men aged 45-79 years, no prior history of CAD). The participants

Receipt of mammography recommendations among White and non-White women before and after the 2009 United States Preventive Services Task Force recommendation change.

PURPOSE: Receipt of a mammography recommendation from a physician is a strong predictor of obtaining a mammogram. In 2009, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended routine biennial mammography for women aged 50-74 but not for women aged 40-49. We examined changes in reports of clinician recommendations for mammography among White and non-White women after these age-specific recommendations were issued. METHODS: Data from women aged 40-49 and 50-74 were drawn from the 2008 and 2013 National Health Interview Surveys. We used linear probability models to determine wh
