Natural Treatment Options for Nail Disorders.

The growing demand for natural treatments has raised concerns among clinicians due to limited scientific evidence supporting their use. This review article addresses the issue by assisting dermatologists and general practitioners in recommending natural treatments for the following common nail disorders: nail brittleness, onychomycosis, periungual verrucae, paronychia, chloronychia, nail psoriasis, nail lichen planus, onychocryptosis, onycholysis, and congenital malalignment of the great toenail. One limitation is the scarcity of existing reviews on natural treatment options for nail disorders

The Impact of Alcohol Consumption on Cardiovascular Health: Myths and Measures.

Over the past several decades, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has nearly doubled, and alcohol has played a major role in the incidence of much of it. Alcohol has also been attributed in deaths due to infectious diseases, intentional and unintentional injuries, digestive diseases, and several other non-communicable diseases, including cancer. The economic costs of alcohol-associated health outcomes are significant at the individual as well as the country level. Risks due to alcohol consumption increase for most cardiovascular diseases, including hypertensive heart disease, cardi

Clinical Management of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in the Netherlands: Barriers to and Proposals for the Implementation of the International Clinical Practice Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: In order to successfully implement the international clinical care guidelines for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in the Netherlands, it is essential to know what barriers are experienced by healthcare practitioners regarding guideline adherence and organization of care. In the Netherlands, academic medical centers provide follow up visits and work together with peripheral hospitals, rehabilitation centers, centers for home ventilation and primary care centers for treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate perceived barriers to international clinical DMD guideline adherence and identi

Drug-Related Deaths in a Tertiary Hospital: Characteristics of Spontaneously Reported Cases and Comparison to Cases Detected from a Retrospective Study.

Drug-related deaths (DRDs) are a common cause of hospital death. Pharmacovigilance, either as spontaneous reporting or active surveillance, plays a key role in the detection and reporting of suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs). We conducted a retrospective analysis of all DRDs spontaneously reported to a pharmacovigilance program of a tertiary hospital, by health care professionals. We compared these results to those of a previous retrospective study conducted in the same hospital from the hospital's mortality registry. From 1460 spontaneous reported ADRs in a 10-year period, 73 (5%) were

Effects of circadian variation, lifestyle and environment on hematological parameters: A narrative review.

The complete blood count (CBC) is the most widely prescribed laboratory test. It plays a key role in screening, diagnosing, and monitoring a variety of medical disorders. Preanalytical and analytical variables are responsible for more than 50% of laboratory errors that may lead to spurious CBC results. The effects of blood sampling, transport, storage, and analytical errors on hematological parameters have been well described. Circadian variation and changes in lifestyle and environment can also affect blood cells. It has been extensively studied in the past, but highly variable methodology an

Gender Bias: Another Rising Curve to Flatten?

The COVID-19 pandemic and the upheaval it is causing may be leading to novel manifestations of the well-established mechanisms by which women have been marginalized in professional roles, robbing the field of the increased collective intelligence that exists when diverse perspectives are embraced. Unconscious bias, gendered expectations, and overt hostility minimize the contributions of women in academic medicine to the detriment of all. The current environment of heightened stress and new socially distant forms of communication may be exacerbating these well-recognized obstacles to women cont…

Treatment of mental illness in American adolescents varies widely within and across areas.

Many mental health disorders first manifest in adolescence, and early treatment may affect the course of the disease. Using a large national database of insurance claims, this study focuses on variations in the type of care that adolescent patients receive when they are treated for an initial episode of mental illness. We found large variations in the probability that children receive follow-up care and in the type of follow-up care received across zip codes. We also found large variations in the probability that children receive drug treatments that raise a red flag when viewed through the le

Design of a Secure Three-Factor Authentication Scheme for Smart Healthcare.

Now-a-days, the society is witnessing a keen urge to enhance the quality of healthcare services with the intervention of technology in the health sector. The main focus in transforming traditional healthcare to smart healthcare is on facilitating the patients as well as medical professionals. However, this changover is not easy due to various issues of security and integrity associated with it. Security of patients's personal health record and privacy can be handled well by permitting only authorized access to the confidential health-data via suitably designed authentication scheme. In pursuit

Data as promise: Reconfiguring Danish public health through personalized medicine.

'Personalized medicine' might sound like the very antithesis of population science and public health, with the individual taking the place of the population. However, in practice, personalized medicine generates heavy investments in the population sciences - particularly in data-sourcing initiatives. Intensified data sourcing implies new roles and responsibilities for patients and health professionals, who become responsible not only for data contributions, but also for responding to new uses of data in personalized prevention, drawing upon detailed mapping of risk distribution in the populati

Early-onset psychosis in an adolescent with DiGeorge syndrome: A case report.

DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) was first described in 1829 by Dr Angelo DiGeorge. DGS is a cluster of symptoms because of a defect in the development of the pharyngeal pouch. Evidence from cytogenetic studies has linked the pathogenesis of DGS with a deletion of a gene located in chromosome 22-band 22q11. In most affected individuals, the deletion is de novo; however, inheritance has been reported in 10% - 25% of patients. DGS commonly presents with a classical triad of conotruncal cardiac anomalies, hypoplastic thymus and hypocalcaemia. DGS may be of focus to a psychiatrist as it is associated with

Medical Aesthetics Training: Shifting to Collective Competence.

With increased demands for medical aesthetics procedures and the sudden profusion of newly licensed, and unlicensed, providers who are performing these medical aesthetics procedures also comes the responsibility to shift to collective competence. Collective competence refers to what occurs among professionals in action, emphasizing the sharing of experiences, knowledge, and perceptions among those who are providing services to the medical aesthetics client. Registered nurses and medical students are not taught to perform cosmetic procedures in basic nursing or medical programs and thus require

Reading difficulties and the pediatric ophthalmologist.

Approximately 20% of children have dyslexia, a language-based reading disability. A variation in language processing in the brain leads to a deficit in phonological (auditory) processing, which leads to problems in learning to read, write, and spell. Myths continue to exist regarding dyslexia and vision, and although eye and vision problems may coexist with dyslexia, they are not more prevalent than in the general population. Rarely vision problems may make reading at near very difficult and may masquerade as a learning problem or attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity diso
