Conservative interventions for positional plagiocephaly: a systematic review.

This review aimed to synthesize current research evidence to determine the effectiveness of conservative interventions for infants with positional plagiocephaly. A systematic review was conducted, where papers were sourced from 13 library and internet databases. Research was included if published in English between 1983 and 2003. Level of evidence and quality of each paper was assessed to determine studies' magnitude of inherent bias. Results were synthesized in a narrative format and were considered with respect to homogeneity of participants, response rate, and outcome measures. Sixteen pape

Prevalence and associated impairments of mild mental retardation in six- to ten-year old children in Pakistan: a prospective study.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of mild mental retardation (MMR) in 6-10-y-old children in a prospectively followed cohort in Pakistan from four areas with different socioeconomic conditions. Retarded children were identified by a two-step method, comprising a household screening with the Ten Questions Screening in 649 families followed by clinical investigation and psychometric testing (WISC-R and Griffiths) of the 132 children found by the screening. The overall prevalence of MMR among 6-10-y-old children was 6.2%. The distribution of MMR was uneven, with 1.2% am

Comparison of psychopathology in the mothers of autistic and mentally retarded children.

The aim of this study was to evaluate anxiety, depression, alexithymia, and general psychological symptoms in the mothers of autistic children in comparison with those in the mothers of mentally retarded children. Forty mothers of autistic children and 38 mothers of mentally retarded children were included in the study. After a clinical interview, psychometric tests were performed for depression, anxiety, alexithymia, and Symptom Distress Check List (SCL-90) for general psychological symptoms. Non-depression rates was 27.5% in the mothers of autistic children whereas the rate was 55.3% in the

Reliability and validity of the Panic Disorder Severity Scale: replication and extension.

UNLABELLED: The Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) is a recently developed seven-item instrument to rate overall severity of Panic Disorder. The scale has previously shown good psychometric properties in a sample of Panic Disorder patients with no more than mild agoraphobia. The purpose of this paper is to confirm reliability and validity, to provide an estimate of a cut-score discriminating the presence or absence of current DSM-IV Panic Disorder, and to determine the factor structure of the instrument. PROCEDURES: 104 psychiatric outpatients, including 54 with current Panic Disorder, unde

Patient-based outcomes after clubfoot surgery.

Despite decades of experience in the area of clubfoot repair, considerable uncertainty remains regarding indications, surgical technique, and long-term results of treatment. Much of this uncertainty is due to the lack of a standardized and valid method for assessing postoperative outcomes of clubfoot repair. The current study used various end points to compare traditional and patient-based outcome measures and to develop a disease-specific instrument that is both meaningful to the patient and statistically valid. A cohort of 46 patients was identified, and several types of outcomes data were c

Reading of kana (phonetic symbols for syllables) in Japanese children with spastic diplegia and periventricular leukomalacia.

In 31 Japanese children with spastic diplegia and periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), the age at which they could read Hiragana (phonetic symbols for syllables) and psychometric data were examined. Reading of Hiragana was achieved between 2 and 8 years of age in all subjects except one. Four children could read Hiragana at 2 to 3 years of age, an age which is considered early among Japanese children. Performance IQs of the Wechsler Scale were lower than Verbal IQs in 18 of 19 children who were administered this test, and DQs of the cognitive adaptive (C-A) area of the K-form developmental test

[How to examine a patient with higher cerebral dysfunction].

The mysterious maneuvers of the neuropsychological examination actually conceal the very intellectual process by which diagnosis is obtained. Five features that are usually sufficient to diagnose aphasia are 1) spontaneous speech, 2) speech comprehension, 3) repetition, 4) reading aloud with comprehension, and 5) writing. In spontaneous speech, fluent aphasics have normal rhythm, melody, and well-articulated sentence, but the speech is filled with paraphasias. The speech of non-fluent aphasics is slow, labored, and poorly articulated. When patients with spatial neglect are asked to perform a v

Cerebral blood flow velocity in acute schizophrenic patients. A transcranial Doppler ultrasonography study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether acutely psychotic first-episode schizophrenics show an increased cerebral blood flow velocity and whether this condition is reversible on psychopathological improvement. METHODS: In the first of two examinations, transcranial Doppler ultrasonography and assessment with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were performed on 28 acutely psychotic, neuroleptically naive, first-episode schizophrenics. In the second examination, the same patients were assessed psychometrically (PANSS) as well as with Doppler ultrason

Assessing young children's views of their academic, social, and emotional lives: an evaluation of the self-perception scales of the Berkeley Puppet Interview.

In a prospective, longitudinal study we examined the psychometric properties of the self-perception scales of the Berkeley Puppet Interview (BPI). A total sample of 97 young children were assessed with the BPI at 3 time points: preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. The BPI assesses young children's self-perceptions of their school adjustment in 6 domains: academic competence, achievement motivation, social competence, peer acceptance, depression-anxiety, and aggression-hostility. Results showed that 4 1/2- to 7 1/2-year-olds possess a multidimensional self-concept that can be reliably meas

Group psychoeducation for bulimia nervosa with and without additional psychotherapy process sessions.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined whether additional sessions of group psychotherapy process (PP) would incrementally benefit bulimia nervosa (BN) subjects over and above that which is achieved through a course of brief group psychoeducation (PE). METHOD: Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the first cohort of 40 BN subjects completed five-session PE-alone groups that were highly didactic and explicitly devoid of group process work. The second cohort of 41 BN subjects completed 12-session PE + PP groups that integrated PE with more conventional cognitive-behavioral group process interv

Tourette syndrome. Neuropsychological tests for obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Recent evidence has suggested that the commonly observed comorbid behavioral disorders of Tourette syndrome, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder clearly have an impact on cognitive, educational, and psychosocial function. These behavioral features of Tourette syndrome can be more debilitating than the cardinal motor features of the disorder and they require careful clinical assessment so that appropriate treatment intervention can be offered to patients and their families. This article focuses on objective neuropsychological and behavioral asses

Factor structure of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory.

The assessment of anger has received increased attention because of growing evidence that anger and hostility are related to heart disease. Research on anger assessment has also been stimulated by the development of psychometric measures for evaluating different facets of anger, such as the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI). In this study, factor analyses of the responses of a large sample of university students to the 44 STAXI items identified 7 factors. Of these, the first 6 factors closely corresponded with the 6 STAXI scales and subscales: State Anger (S-Anger); Trait Anger Te

Nonpsychotic thought disorder: objective clinical identification of somatization and antisocial personality in language patterns.

This report describes a new method of using language patterns to identify somatization and antisocial personality (ASPD) disorders in clinical practice. A set of definitions describing characteristic speech patterns was developed to identify "nonpsychotic thought disorder" (NPTD). Speech patterns of subjects with somatization disorder and/or ASPD were compared with those of controls. Blind raters assessed audiotaped samples of speech obtained through open-ended interviews for instances of elements of NPTD. Women with somatization or ASPD had significantly more NPTD speech responses than contro

[Psychological factors in spasmodic dysphonia].

BACKGROUND: Spastic dysphonia has usually been thought as a form of psychogenic dysphonia. A considerable number of authors now feel that this voice disorder is caused by neurological factors. PATIENTS: This study evaluates several psychological factors in 18 patients (9 males, 9 females; mean age: 52.6 years) who had been phoniatrically diagnosed as suffering from adductor spasmodic dysphonia. RESULTS: In standardized psychometric tests, clinical performance of the patients as a group did not deviate from published test norms with respect to emotional instability, hypochondriasis, somatizat

Influence of mental retardation severity and respondent characteristics on self-reported attitudes toward mental retardation and eugenics.

Eugenics refers to the investigation of means of social control to improve the mental or physical qualities of future generations. The present study investigated whether the self-reported attitudes toward mental retardation and eugenics of a sample of 572 respondents would vary as a function of (I) severity of the mental retardation attitude referent; and (2) respondent sociodemographic characteristics. Among the respondents, 380 were health and human service providers (66% upper division undergraduate students and 34% graduate level professionals) and 192 were upper division undergraduate stu

Cerebrospinal compensation in hydrocephalic children.

One hundred and fifteen cases of hydrocephalus in children were analysed. Cerebrospinal compensatory reserve was assessed by a computerized, constant rate, lumbar infusion test. Head circumference and ventricular size were measured and a psychometric examination carried out. A classification of hydrocephalus based on resting cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) and resistance to cerebrospinal fluid outflow (RCSF) was introduced. Parameters of compensatory reserve were compared in atrophy (low CSFP, low RCSF), normal-pressure hydrocephalus (low CSFP, increased RCSF), non-communicating hydrocepha

Clonidine and Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: double-blind study using objective rating methods.

Clonidine has been suggested to be effective in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS), but no double-blind study has ever evaluated its effects using objective measures. Thirty patients with GTS completed a 6-month placebo-controlled crossover study of the effectiveness of clonidine. Videotapes were obtained at each 3-week visit and were evaluated randomly at the end of the study for distribution, frequency, and severity of motor and vocal tics. Quantifiable psychometric examinations were performed as well. The use of clonidine did not significantly (p less than 0.05) reduce motor tics, vocal

Cortical dysfunction as an aetiological factor in learning disability.

This study examines the relationship between learning disability, EEG changes, and events in the life history of the individual child which could cause cortical damage or dysfunction. One hundred children with learning disability were compared with 100 age- and sex-matched normal children identified by random selection. Each child underwent routine EEG studies. Abnormalities were detected in 71 of the learning-disabled group and in 29 of the controls. The incidence of abnormal pregnancy was 31% in children with learning disability and 10% in controls. Neonatal complications occurred in 29 lear

Mild high-renin essential hypertension. Neurogenic human hypertension?

To determine whether the elevated plasma renin activity in some cases of mild essential hypertension expresses sympathetic-nervous-system over-activity, we compared indexes of sympathetic activity in 16 patients with mild high-renin essential hypertension, 15 hypertensive patients with normal plasma renin activity and 20 normal subjects. Patients with elevated activity exhibited a raised plasma norepinephrine concentration (P less than 0.05), a greater fall in cardiac output with cardiac beta-adrenergic blockade by intravenous propranolol (P less than 0.01), reduction in total peripheral vascu
