Blockade of motion- and cisplatin-induced emesis by a 5-HT2 receptor agonist in Suncus murinus.

1. The effects of (+/-)-1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOl), a 5-hydroxytryptamine 5-HT2A/5-HT2C receptor agonist, on motion … gonist. 4. The present results suggest an inhibitory role for central 5-HT2 receptors in the emetic reflex mechanism and that a 5-HT2 receptor agonist may be a useful tool to investigate the involvement of 5-HT receptors in the emetic reflex.

[Möbius syndrome with crossed total hemiatrophy--a case report].

The patient was a 26-year-old male who was noted to have asymmetry on the face, upper limbs, and trunk, and who showed no pursuit eye movements and no changes in the facial expression from birth. The patient developed transient global amnesia and was hospitalized. Neurological examination established atrophy of the right face, and left trunk involving the upper limb, and bilateral oculomotor and abducens nerve palsy. In auditory brainstem response, waves III to V were bilaterally obscured, and the blink reflex disclosed disturbances of peripheral facial nerve and the brainstem, suggesting deve…

The dopamine D1 receptor agonist SKF 38393 suppresses detrusor hyperreflexia in the monkey with parkinsonism induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP).

A pharmacological study using monkeys, in which parkinsonism was induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), was underta … st, significantly increased the bladder volume and pressure thresholds for inducing the micturition reflex without affecting those in normal monkeys. In contrast, subcutaneous injections of quinpirole, a dopamine D2 receptor agonist, and apomorphine, a dopamine D1 and D2 receptor agonist, slightly, but significantly reduced the volume threshold of the bl …

[Urodynamics and perineal rehabilitation in women. Prognosis and results].

It is essential, as far as possible to be able to predict the result of perineal rehabilitation. It seems preferable to complete perineal testing by a clinical functional test for evaluation of the preventive action of voluntary perineal contraction in stress incontinence and to measure urethral pressure in four different conditions: at rest, during stress (coughing), during voluntary perineal contraction, and during both stress and voluntary perineal contraction. These tests and measures provide a better evaluation of active continence, both reflex and voluntary continence, and the ability of…

Sudomotor potential evoked by magnetic stimulation of the neck.

We studied the sudomotor potential in the palm of the hand, evoked by magnetic stimulation of the neck, in 15 normal subjects and five patie … fort. With this method, we estimated the postganglionic sympathetic conduction time and the central reflex time, the mean values (+/- SD) of which were 408.5 +/- 31.8 and 323.3 +/- 45.2 msec. In three patients with severe dry skin, the sudomotor potential and the sympathetic skin response were not obtained. A patient with OPCA had a prolonged central ref …

Effects of atipamezole, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, on the anesthesia induced by barbiturates and medetomidine.

We studied the effects of atipamezole, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, on hypnosis induced by medetomidine, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist (1 mg/kg IP), and pentobarbital (40 mg/kg IP) by testing the righting reflex in the rat. The duration of antinociception was assessed with repeated pinch tests. Medetomidine-induced hypnosis and antinociception were inhibited by atipamezole at doses greater than 0.1 mg/kg. Atipamezole restored the righting reflex at a dose ratio that was 1:10 or more to that of medetomidine used to induce hypnosis. Subcutaneous atipamezole (1.5 mg/kg) increased the dur…

Sensory nerves of the intestines: role in control of pyloric region of dogs.

The canine pylorus is the target for a large array of extrinsic and intrinsic nerve-produced effects. Some of them have intermediate nicotin … udied (VIP, PHI, GAL, SP, NKA, NKB, CCK, and others. The pylorus is also the target of an important reflex initiated by acid in the duodenal lumen. Our preliminary work suggests that this reflex is initiated by acid induced release of 5HT from the EC cells to act on 5HT receptors on sensory nerves which activate the ascending chain of cholinergic nerves …

Effect of sodium fluoride on early stages of otosclerosis.

The present investigation evaluates the effectiveness of NaF treatment in modifying the natural course of subclinical otosclerosis, as monitored by the stapedius reflex. The study was carried out on 128 relatives of patients suffering from surgically confirmed footplate otosclerosis. The diagnosis of subclinical otosclerosis was made on the basis of presence of the on-off effect. One group of subjects was treated with NaF in doses ranging from 6 to 16 mg according to age. The treatment lasted 2 years. A second group served as a control. Changes in stapedius reflex morphology were evaluated at …

[Experimental and clinical studies of urethral anesthesia on etiology and treatment of detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia].

We studied whether detrusor-sphincter synergia during micturition was obtained by means of urethral anesthesia with lidocaine hydrochloride … nical cases. These results suggest that urethral anesthesia blocks the urethro-urethral contraction reflex and secondarily activates vesico-urethral relaxation reflex. The block of urethral sensory nerves is thought to effectively treat detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia.

Occurrence of pregnancy despite spontaneous ovulation suppression by intracerebroventricular infusion of substance P in rats.

Substance P (SP) infusion into the third cerebral ventricle and intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital block spontaneous ovulation in fe … found in the group of animals injected with pentobarbital (69%). The obtained results suggest that reflex ovulation in female rats induced by copulation cannot be blocked by SP i. c. v. administration nor by i. p. pentobarbital, and suggest a different neural mechanism responsible for spontaneous and copulation-induced reflex ovulation.

Posture- and emotion-induced severe hypertensive paroxysms with baroreceptor dysfunction.

In a patient followed up for 30 years, severe but brief posture- or emotion-induced hypertensive paroxysms with flushing were associated with an increased cardiac output [inconsistently accompanied by increased plasma catecholamines (CA)] and a decreased blood pressure reactivity to norepinephrine with decreased reflex bradycardia. Sodium depletion further accentuated the latter abnormality and reproducibly reversed orthostatic hypertension to orthostatic hypotension. Abnormal responses in the Valsalva manoeuvre in an upright position suggested a defect in baroreceptor sensitivity, but may als…

Posturographic findings in two common peripheral vestibular disorders.

Peripheral vestibular pathology disturbs the vestibulospinal reflex in a number of cases. The recording of postural sway furnishes an evaluation of this vestibulospinal influence. Two common peripheral vestibular syndromes were studied: Ménière's disease and peripheral unilateral vestibular hypofunction. It is evident that, by posturography, vestibulospinal disturbance is shown in these peripheral syndromes, whereas its occurrence cannot be predicted by other tests, e.g. caloric and rotation tests. Normalization of the vestibulospinal reflex depends on central adapting mechanisms, which were e…

A descriptive analysis of involuntary bearing-down efforts during the expulsive phase of labor.

A series of descriptive studies was carried out to characterize maternal respiration, type of bearing-down efforts, vocalization, and behavior; describe the obstetric conditions and intrauterine pressure associated with the bearing-down reflex; and describe the duration of second stage, fetal heart rate, and neonatal outcomes when women bear down spontaneously. Thirty-one healthy nulliparous women who had received no formal childbirth education were neither directed nor instructed to bear down with contractions. The women were supported in their involuntary bearing-down efforts throughout the …

Inhibition of gastrointestinal transit due to surgical trauma or peritoneal irritation is reduced in capsaicin-treated rats.

Treatment of newborn rats with capsaicin (0.16 mmol/kg) is known to cause a permanent degeneration of mainly unmyelinated afferent neurons. … in response to surgery or peritoneal irritation is due, at least in part, to activation of a neural reflex. The afferent limb of this reflex may be constituted by capsaicin-sensitive nerve fibers, whereas the efferent limb seems to involve sympathetic adrenergic neurons.

Anorectal motility after surgery for spina bifida.

Anorectal motility was studied in 93 children (aged 15 days to 16 1/2 years) who had undergone surgery for myelocele or meningomyelocele, and 80 controls, matched for age and sex. Mean resting pressure in the anal canal of patients was markedly decreased, particularly in the presence of incontinence, and unstable. The recording of a rectoanal inhibitory reflex both in the upper anal canal and at the anal margin was associated with the presence of fecal incontinence and motor disorders of the lower extremities. Patients could be divided into four groups according to manometric pattern: 1) those…

[Follow-up of unexplained trigeminal neuropathies].

Fourteen patients with unilateral trigeminal neuropathy of unknown origin were examined 5 to 30 years after onset of the illness. In one patient, sensory loss in the area of the mental nerve was probably due to the pressure of the denture. In another three patients there were signs suggestive of multiple sclerosis. In the remaining ten patients there were no manifestation of any additive progressive disease or polyneuropathy. Unilateral trigeminal neuropathy is a benign disorder. The symptoms can persist, regress or even completely disappear. The significant delay in the reflex response of the…

Lung inflation: effects on heart rate, respiration, and vagal afferent activity in seals.

In the anesthetized harbor seal, Phoca vitulina, the Hering-Breuer inflation reflex was weak and comparable to that in humans. Single inflations of the lungs from a syringe during the expiratory phase of normal breathing caused temporary inhibition of breathing and an immediate tachycardia dependent on the integrity of the cervical vagosympathetic nerves. A similar cardiac response occurred when the lungs were artificially inflated during an experimental dive and under conditions in which apnea and bradycardia were reflexly induced by a combination of stimulation of the carotid body chemorecep…

Occult fifth nerve dysfunction in multiple sclerosis.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded following trigeminal nerve stimulation in 25 normal subjects. Mucosal stimulation of the lip resulted in a reduced stimulus artefact. The three initial peaks, N13, P19, and N30, measured respectively 12.8 +/- 0.9 S-3, 19.3 +/- 1.4 S-3, and 28.6 +/- 1.7 S-3. Blink reflex studies were also performed in most of these subjects. In 41.4% of 29 patients with established or suspected multiple sclerosis, the trigeminal SEP was abnormal. Additional use of the blink reflex raised the overall incidence of trigeminal nerve dysfunction to 51.7%. None of …

Comparative effects of three calcium antagonists, diltiazem, verapamil and nifedipine, on the sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes. Experimental and clinical studies.

Diltiazem, verapamil and nifedipine suppress sinoatrial (SA) nodal function in the excised rabbit heart. Clinically, however, their suppressive effect on the SA node is modified considerably by the reflex increase in sympathetic tone as a result of the fall in blood pressure caused by the vasodilating action of the calcium antagonists. Diltiazem, verapamil and nifedipine suppress atrioventricular (AV) nodal conduction and prolong refractory periods in the excised rabbit AV node. Clinically, diltiazem and verapamil exert a similar suppressive effect on the AV node and are useful for treating an…
