An IgM dot-immunobinding assay (IgM-DIA) was developed for the diagnosis of scrub typhus infection. The whole cell antigens of Karp, Kato and Gilliam strains of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi were immobilized onto nitrocellulose paper and reacted with patients sera. The presence of IgM R. tsutsugamushi specific antibody in the patient sera could be detected by the observation of a visible brown dot on the nitrocellulose paper. A study was carried out to determine the serum vitamin A levels of 250 preschool children in a rural community in eastern Nigeria. The children were aged between 2 months and 5 years and comprised 117 boys and 133 girls. A total of 23 (9.2%) children had 'deficient levels' (< 10 micrograms/dl) and 41 (16.4%) had 'low levels' (< 20 micrograms/dl) according to the Interdepartmental Committee on Nutrition for National Defence criteria for the interpretation of serum vitamin A levels. We carried out an epidemiological study of ulcerative colitis in 279 Israeli kibbutzim (121,403 population). The prevalence on December 31, 1987 was 121.08 per 100,000 population. Preschool and school-aged children from a small area of rural Jamaica were examined in an attempt to assess the epidemiologic factors predisposing certain persons to pyoderma. Limb reduction defects occurring among 1,213,913 consecutive livebirths in British Columbia during the period 1952-1984 inclusive were reviewed. A total of 659 cases of limb reduction defects were identified, 393 of them involving the long bones and 190 of them more than one limb. The clinical case definition for AIDS proposed by WHO for use in Africa was evaluated against HIV antibody status in 72 patients in rural Zaire. Twenty-one (29%) of the patients were antibody-positive. For diagnosing anti-HIV seropositivity, the case definition had a sensitivity of 52%, a specificity of 78%, a positive predictive value of 50% and a negative predictive value of 80%. A survey of all married women aged 15-49 was conducted in 1976 in five rural villages in the predominantly Roman Catholic Philippines.
