Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common major birth defects and the leading cause of death from congenital malformations. The etiology remains largely unknown, though genetic variants clearly contribute. Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is usually caused by coxsackievirus A16 or enterovirus 71 (EV71). Between 2011 and 2013, HFMD cases were reported from different Cuban provinces. A total of 42 clinical specimens were obtained from 23 patients. Detection, identification and phylogenetic analysis of enterovirus-associated HFMD were carried out by virus isolation, specific enterovirus PCR and partial VP1 sequences. HEV was detected in 11 HFMD cases. Emerging genetic variants of coxsackievirus A6 and EV71 were identified as the causative agents of the Cuban HFMD cases.

Ehrlichia canis infection of dogs in the Philippines has been detected by serological and peripheral blood smear examination methods, but not by molecular means. Anaplasma platys infection in dogs has not yet been officially reported, although it is suspected to occur in the country. In many fishes, dopamine (DA) strongly inhibits luteinizing hormone (LH) release by direct action at the pituitary level. In this study, the effect of DA on LH synthesis was examined by detecting its β-subunit mRNA level in immature grass carp pituitary cells. Results showed that DA inhibited LHβ mRNA expression and its inhibition was antagonized by a DA D2 receptor (DRD2) antagonist, sulpiride, suggesting that DA inhibited LH synthesis via DRD2. We report a novel glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) mutation, which we propose to name G6PD Cincinnati (c.1037A > T, p.N346I), found in combination with G6PD Gastonia (c.637G > T, p.V213L) in an infant who presented with neonatal cholestasis. AIMS: The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize new bacteriophages that infect a wide range of plant pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum strains.
