Patient health literacy and participation in the health-care process.

OBJECTIVES: Health information is an important resource for patients to understand and engage in the management of their health conditions. We discuss the role of health literacy (HL) in improving patient participation and propose future research in this field. METHODS: Literature searches were conducted to review existing definitions and measures of HL and identify empirical findings of its impact on patient health/illness-related behaviours. We searched MEDLINE using 'health literacy' as a keyword and retrieved 371 articles published in English between 1985 and 2006. We also hand-searched p

Lifetime physical activity and prostate cancer risk.

The purpose of our study was to investigate the relation in between physical activity in different periods of life at work and in leisure-time and prostate cancer risk. We conducted a case-control study on prostate cancer in Italy between 1991 and 2002, which included 1,294 incident cases of histologically confirmed prostate cancer below 75 years of age and 1,451 controls, who were admitted to hospital for acute nonneoplastic conditions. Odds ratios (OR) of prostate cancer according to physical activity in different periods of life were obtained by unconditional multiple logistic regression mo

Evaluation of the prognostic value of the health assessment form among patients clinically ready for discharge.

The aim of the study was to identify patterns of physical, psychological, and social conditions that may be of prognostic value when it comes to assessing continued care of patients clinically ready for discharge; a related aim was to evaluate instruments used for this identification, especially a Swedish version of the health assessment form. The sample consisted of 53 consecutive patients (mean age 82.8 years, SD = 6.6 years) All patients came from their own homes and were admitted to surgical and orthopaedic departments. Interviews were carried out on the day the patients were assessed as m…

The latent structure of anxiety symptoms in anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Research in the psychopathology of panic and anxiety disorders, particularly agoraphobia, suggests that fear of fear may be the basis of these conditions. However, there is little empirical research on the definition and validity of the concept of fear of fear in a clinical study group. The authors' aims are 1) to determine empirically if particular associations between symptoms and beliefs exist in a group of patients with anxiety disorders and what underlying dimensions of perceived threat they represent and 2) to assess the relative importance of these associations in agoraphobia

Informing Policy Responses to Digital Technology Use and Youth Mental Health and Well-Being: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of children, adolescents, and youths is a growing concern globally, with increasing prevalence of conditions and help-seeking behavior. Alongside traditional factors, digital determinants are now prominent influences on mental health. With digital platforms integral to young people's lives, and problematic social media use rising, policymakers face the challenge of balancing the benefits and risks of young people's digital technology use. Decisive action is hindered by inconsistent evidence on the impacts of social media and other technology use on mental health a

Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial to Promote Physical Activity Among Low-Resourced Mothers in New York City: Protocol for the Free Time for Wellness Effectiveness Trial.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is pervasive and prevalent in the United States, particularly among women of low socioeconomic position and women with children. Structural and social barriers make active leisure time a rare commodity, creating a pressing health issue because physical inactivity increases the risk of chronic diseases and poor health. OBJECTIVE: The broad objective of this study is to test the effectiveness of Free Time for Wellness, a multilevel intervention to increase physical activity among low-resourced mothers. METHODS: This study comprises a 3-arm parallel cluster rando

Using information technology and social networking for recruitment of research participants: experience from an exploratory study of pediatric Klinefelter syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recruiting pediatric samples for research may be challenging due to parental mistrust of the research process, privacy concerns, and family time constraints. Recruitment of children with chronic and genetic conditions may further complicate the enrollment process. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we describe the methodological challenges of recruiting children for research and provide an exemplar of how the use of information technology (IT) strategies with social networking may improve access to difficult-to-reach pediatric research participants. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional

The development and validation of the pain-related stigma scale for adolescents (PReSS-A) with chronic pain.

Adolescents with chronic pain often feel stigmatized by their pain condition. Despite the frequency of stigma in this population, few measures exist to assess pain-related stigma in youth with chronic pain. This study reports on the development and validation of the self-report Pain-related Stigma Scale for Adolescents (PReSS-A). The PReSS-A was designed to assess several dimensions of pain-related stigma (felt stigma, peer stigmatization, internalized stigma, and anticipatory stigma/concealment), and to assess stigma across multiple interpersonal relationships. Reliability, construct validity

Multiple sevoflurane exposures in infant monkeys do not impact the mother-infant bond.

Exposure to general anesthesia during the postnatal period is associated with death of brain cells as well as long-term impairments in cognitive and emotional behavior in animal models. These models are critical for investigating mechanisms of pediatric anesthetic neurotoxicity as well as for testing potential strategies for preventing or mitigating this toxicity. Control conditions for anesthesia exposure involve separation of conscious infants from their mothers for variable periods of time, which could have its own effect on subsequent behavior because of stress to the mother and/or infant

The prevalence of skin conditions in Romanian school children.

Virtually nothing is known about the prevalence of skin conditions in children in the general population. Although we know something about the relative frequency of skin conditions seen by dermatologists, we do not know how such referrals are influenced by factors such as social class, accessibility to medical services or educational and cultural background. In order to estimate the burden and relative frequency of dermatological disease in children in the community, we measured the point prevalence of skin conditions in 1114 Romanian schoolchildren aged 6-12 years, using the British Associati

The impact of sex, species, environmental context, and alternative reinforcers in animal models of cocaine use disorders.

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) remains a major public health challenge with no effective pharmacological treatments to date. Although extensive preclinical research using animal models has advanced our understanding, these findings have yet to translate into clinical success. This review highlights key independent variables that should be incorporated to improve the validity and translational relevance of animal studies. The discussion is organized around three primary domains: the agent; the host; and the environment. Most studies in this review focus on cocaine as the agent and host factors such

Drosophila melanogaster as a Model to Study Fragile X-Associated Disorders.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a global neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the expansion of CGG trinucleotide repeats (≥200) in the Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene. FXS is the hallmark of Fragile X-associated disorders (FXD) and the most common monogenic cause of inherited intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. There are several animal models used to study FXS. In the FXS model of Drosophila, the only ortholog of FMR1, dfmr1, is mutated so that its protein is missing. This model has several relevant phenotypes, including defects in the circadian output pathwa

Insights into recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors: evidenced by New York Times commenters.

In September 2019, the New York Times (NYT) published the article "Fighting the Shame of Skin Picking," which discussed the cosmetic, social and emotional impacts of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). BFRBs, including excoriation disorder, trichotillomania, onychotillomania, and onychophagia, are recurring actions that damage one's physical appearance. The aim of this study is to characterize the demographic information provided and themes raised in the 166 comments posted in response to the article. The most commonly reported condition was skin picking (38.2%), followed by trichotillo

Perceived Facilitators and Barriers regarding Partner Notification in People Living With HIV in Hunan, China: A Qualitative Study From the Patient Perspective.

Consensus has been reached about the important role of partner notification (PN) for HIV prevention and control programs. We used a qualitative study to explore facilitators of and barriers to PN to understand reasons for disclosure and nondisclosure by people living with HIV in China. Our main goal was to identify information related to PN that may be unique to the Chinese cultural context. Of 41 participants who were interviewed, 33 had disclosed their HIV status to sexual partners. Facilitators for PN included preserving the integrity of the partnership, social support, and potential benefi

The etiology, diagnosis, and management of hyperhidrosis: A comprehensive review: Etiology and clinical work-up.

Hyperhidrosis (HH) is a dermatologic disorder defined by sweat production exceeding thermoregulatory needs. Clinically, HH is diagnosed when excess sweating creates significant emotional, physical, or social discomfort, causing a negative impact on the patient's quality of life. Existing data imply that this condition may affect at least 4.8% of the US population. The etiology of HH may stem from a complex autonomic nervous system dysfunction, resulting in neurogenic overactivity of otherwise normal eccrine sweat glands. Alternatively, HH may be a result of aberrant central control of emotions
