Terrylene: Synthesis, Modifications, and Multifaceted Applications.

As a higher homologue of rylene with six fused benzene rings, terrylene exhibits distinct optoelectronic properties compared to its lower analogues, naphthalene, and perylene. In 1948, E. Clar reported the synthesis of terrylene for the first time, marking the beginning of higher rylene chemistry. Numerous synthetic routes have led to the establishment of a diverse array of terrylene-based chromophores in the literature so far. The extensive π-conjugated surface of terrylene derivatives promotes strong intermolecular π-π stacking interactions. Synthesis challenges and poor solubilities hindere

Hemostatic and antibacterial performance of alginate/tannic acid-coated gauze for advanced wound care.

Medical cotton gauze has traditionally been used as a local hemostatic material. However, there is a growing demand for innovative solutions that not only reduce blood loss but also prevent secondary infections. In the present study, a novel multifunctional hemostatic cotton gauze (designated as SGT-Ca@Gz) is developed by integrating sodium alginate, tannic acid, and calcium chloride (CaCl2) onto the gauze surface via a two-step dip-coating process. This technique provides the gauze with antibacterial and antioxidant properties, thereby effectively reducing both blood loss and the time needed

Manufacturing synthetic viscoelastic antigen-presenting cells for immunotherapy.

This protocol details the preparation and functionalization of viscoelastic synthetic antigen-presenting cells (APCs) for T cell activation, designed to enhance immunotherapeutic efficacy. Using a high-throughput microfluidic system and post-processing, we create cell-sized sodium alginate microbeads with tunable stiffness, viscoelasticity and surface chemistry, enabling them to better mimic the physical and activation properties of natural APCs. The protocol includes fabrication of synthetic cells with defined sizes, crosslinking strategies to achieve desirable mechanical properties, surface

Fabrication of Soft Transparent Patient-Specific Vascular Models with Stereolithographic 3D printing and Thiol-Based Photopolymerizable Coatings.

An ideal vascular phantom should be anatomically accurate, have mechanical properties as close as possible to the tissue, and be sufficiently transparent for ease of visualization. However, materials that enable the convergence of these characteristics have remained elusive. The fabrication of patient-specific vascular phantoms with high anatomical fidelity, optical transparency, and mechanical properties close to those of vascular tissue is reported. These final properties are achieved by 3D printing patient-specific vascular models with commercial elastomeric acrylic-based resins before coat

Targeting Cancer Stem Cell Markers or Pathways: A Potential Therapeutic Strategy for Oral Cancer Treatment.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a small subset of cancer cells with stem cell-like properties, self-renewal potential, and differentiation capacity into multiple cell types. Critical genetic alterations or aberrantly activated signaling pathways associated with drug resistance and recurrence have been observed in multiple types of CSCs. In this context, CSCs are considered to be responsible for tumor initiation, growth, progression, therapeutic resistance, and metastasis. Therefore, to effectively eradicate CSCs, tremendous efforts have been devoted to identify specific target molecules that play

Immortalization and characterization of human cell lines with mast cell and monocytic properties.

We have previously derived a cell strain which had both mast cell and monocytic properties from the bone marrow of a child with diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis. This cell strain, termed HBM-M, consisted of two cell populations both of which possessed certain ultrastructural, cytochemical and surface phenotypic features of degranulated mast cells. The cells also displayed cytochemical and surface phenotypic features of monocytes. These cells may represent a common bone marrow derived mast cell/monocyte precursor. Studies of human mast cells have been hindered by the fact that it is difficult to

A method for reconstituting the motility of membrane-bound myosin on the surface of the cell-sized W/O droplet.

Membrane-bound myosin generates force through interactions with the cytoskeletal actin filament beneath the cell membrane and constitutes the mechanical basis for living cells. Myosin ID, a membrane-bound myosin, drives the gliding motion of actin filaments and binds to phospholipids in the lipid membrane of a living cell. Here, we describe the in-droplet actin filament gliding assay, a method that reconstitutes the motility of actomyosin that dynamically interacts with lipid membranes within water-in-oil (W/O) droplets, which mimic the confined geometry of the intracellular environment. Our m

Insights into the adsorption mechanisms of VOCs molecules on non-oxidized and oxidized SnO2 (110) monolayer: DFT analysis.

CONTEXT: Designing efficient sensitive materials for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ethanol, acetone, and benzene is stringent owing to the significant environmental and health risks induced by these compounds, in addition to their role as biomarkers for chronic diseases and food quality. This study investigates the adsorption mechanisms of VOC molecules (ethanol, acetone, and benzene) on both non-oxidized and oxidized SnO2 (110) monolayers and identifies the most suitable surface for gas sensing applications. For this, we examined structural properties, adsorption

New insight into the activation mechanism of hydrogen peroxide by greigite (Fe3S4) for benzene removal: The combined action of dissolved and surface bounded ferrous iron.

Iron sulfides have attracted growing concern in heterogeneous Fenton reaction. However, the structure of iron sulfides is different from that of iron oxides and how the structures affect the activation property of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) remains unclear. This study investigated benzene removal through the activation of H2O2 by the synthesized magnetite (Fe3O4) and greigite (Fe3S4). The structures of Fe3O4 and Fe3S4 were characterized by XRD and EPR, the electron transfer properties of Fe3O4 and Fe3S4 were analyzed by electrochemical workstation, XPS and DFT. It is revealed that the effective

Efficient skin interactions of graphene derivatives: challenge, opportunity or both?

Interactions between graphene, with its wide deployment in consumer products, and skin, the body's largest organ and first barrier, are highly relevant with respect to toxicology and dermal delivery. In this work, interaction of polyglycerol-functionalized graphene sheets, with 200 nm average lateral size and different surface charges, and human skin was studied and their potential as topical delivery systems were investigated. While neutral graphene sheets showed no significant skin interaction, their positively and negatively charged counterparts interacted with the skin, remaining in the st

2D MXene interfaces preserve the basal electrophysiology of targeted neural circuits.

Neural interfaces enable the monitoring of the state of the brain and its composite cell networks, as well as stimulate them to treat nervous disorders. In addition to their highly efficient charge transduction and stability during operation, the neural electrodes should avoid altering the physiological properties of targeted neuronal tissues. Two-dimensional (2D) MXene materials integrate the advantages of metallic conductivity, high specific-surface area and surface functionality in aqueous dispersions, showing promising potential in neural interface applications. Here, we apply uncoated Ti3

Bioactive Coatings Formed on Titanium by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation: Composition and Properties.

Bioactive coatings on VT1-0 commercially pure titanium were formed by the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). A study of the morphological features of coatings was carried out using scanning electron microscopy. A composition of formed coatings was investigated using energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry analysis. It was shown that PEO-coatings have calcium phosphate in their composition, which increases the bioactivity of the surface layer. Electrochemical properties of the samples were studied by potentiondynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in d

"Raincoat for explosives": Surface chemistry approach to control wetting of nitrocellulose with nitroglycerin.

HYPOTHESIS: Wicking and percolation of a liquid in porous media is, among other factors, strongly affected by wettability of the pores. Nitrocellulose (NC) fibrous matrix impregnated with nitroglycerin (NG) is a main component of propellant formulations. Over time, NG, being a wetting liquid, leaks out from the matrix causing fires and explosions resulting from the storage. Here, we propose a chemical functionalization approach aimed at preparation of lyophobic coatings of NC to control wetting and to inhibit leakage of NG. EXPERIMENTAL: NC was functionalized by a two-step process using the r

Polysaccharide-Based Materials Associated with or Coordinated to Gold Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Medical Application.

BACKGROUND: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have enormous potential for application in imaging, diagnosis, and therapies in the medical field. AuNPs are renowned for their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, large surface area, and biocompatibility with body fluids. Further, AuNPs have featured prominently in new methodologies for cancer treatments, like photothermal and imaging therapies. Although AuNPs present enormous potential for application in the medical field, their instability under physiological conditions prevents further uses. However, this limitation may be overcome

Electrostatic interactions between ions near Thomas-Fermi substrates and the surface energy of ionic crystals at imperfect metals.

The electrostatic interaction between two charged particles is strongly modified in the vicinity of a metal. This situation is usually accounted for by the celebrated image charges approach, which was further extended to account for the electronic screening properties of the metal at the level of the Thomas-Fermi description. In this paper we build upon a previous approach [M. A. Vorotyntsev and A. A. Kornyshev, Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz., 1980, 78(3), 1008-1019] and successive works to calculate the 1-body and 2-body electrostatic energy of ions near a metal in terms of the Thomas-Fermi screening l

Chemical Differences in Environmental Films Collected on Surfaces with Different Hydrophilicity.

Environmental films form when airborne particles and molecular species adsorb on solid surfaces. Recent studies have characterized these films but overlook how collection methods and host-surface character (orientation, chemical functionality, or height) change the deposition process. In this work, environmental films are collected at a rural location on gold and silicon surfaces (water contact angles of ca. 57° and <1°, respectively) to determine how the different substrate changes the properties of the accumulated environmental film. Results show that gold surfaces have a homogeneous distrib

Noncovalent interaction-driven self-assembly endows interfacial β-lactoglobulin amyloid fibrils with inhibitory activities against lipid-hydrolyzing enzymes.

Pancreatic lipase (PL) and cholesterol esterase (CE) are dominant lipid-hydrolyzing enzymes involved in the digestion and absorption of lipids, making them attractive targets for obesity prevention. β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) can transform into amyloid fibrils with potential inhibitory activity against PL and CE because of its amphiphilic and self-assembling properties. In this study, Dielectric Barrier Discharge atmospheric cold plasma treatment was employed to regulate the fibrillation process of β-LG (P-β-LGF) at three stages of fibril growth, namely, the initial stage (t0), the end of the lag

Development of a new dental resin matrix using a fluorinated urethane acrylate monomer.

OBJECTIVES: Conventional acrylate monomers such as Bis-GMA and TEGDMA exhibit several limitations, including high hydrophilicity, notable polymerization shrinkage (PS), lack of antibacterial functionality, and potential biocompatibility concerns. To address these challenges, a novel fluorinated polyurethane acrylate (FPUA) monomer was designed to improve the overall performance of dental resin matrices. METHODS: A perfluoropolyether-modified urethane acrylate monomer (FPUA) was synthesized and structurally verified using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Resin matrices were prepared by blending F
