Horizontal ridge augmentation of the atrophic anterior maxilla using rhBMP-2/ACS or autogenous bone grafts: a proof-of-concept randomized clinical trial.

AIM: To compare the effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in an absorbable collagen sponge carrier (ACS) with autogenous bone graft for augmentation of the edentulous atrophic anterior maxilla. METHODS: Twenty-four subjects were enrolled in a randomized, controlled, parallel-group, open-label clinical trial. Subjects either received rhBMP-2/ACS (1.5 mg/ml) or particulated autogenous bone harvested from the mandibular retromolar region. A titanium-mesh was used to provide space and wound stability. A guide was used to standardize clinical recordings using an analog

The effect of extent of local resection on patterns of disease progression in malignant pleural mesothelioma.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine whether or not there are differences in disease progression after radical or nonradical (debulking) surgical procedures for malignant pleural mesothelioma. METHODS: Over a 49-month period, 132 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma underwent surgery. Fifty-three underwent extrapleural pneumonectomy and 79 underwent nonradical procedures. Time to evidence of clinical disease progression was recorded, as was the site(s) of that disease. RESULTS: One-hundred nineteen patients were evaluable, of which 59% (22 radical; 48 nonradical) had disease progressio

Colitis Trouble up High: A Case of Gastroduodenal Ulcerative Colitis and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The presence of backwash ileitis, post-colectomy pre-pouch ileitis, or pouchitis has been widely described in the presentation of ulcerative colitis [UC]. However, over the years, a few cases of upper gastrointestinal [UGI] inflammation in patients with UC have been reported, most commonly post-colectomy.  The aim of this review was to conduct an analysis of the current literature to identify the prevalence, risk factors and current treatment of UGI UC.  Methods: Case report and review of the literature. An electronic search of five bibliographic databases [Pubmed, Cochran

Laparoscopic Versus Open Surgical Management of Hydrocele of the Canal of Nuck: A Retrospective Analysis of 20 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrocele of the canal of Nuck is a condition that arises due to incomplete obliteration of the processus vaginalis or an abnormal outpouching from the round ligament during fetal development. It usually presents as a painless, rarely painful, groin swelling. The definitive diagnosis for this condition is magnetic resonance imaging. Various management options have been proposed for this condition, including open surgery, transabdominal preperitoneal approach, totally extraperitoneal approach, and a combination of laparoscopic and open surgery. The present study highlights the ben

The risk of malignancy in uterine polyps: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial polyps are a common condition. The risk of malignancy has often led to an overtreatment with high health care costs and huge psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and a meta-analysis in order to estimate the prevalence of premalignant and malignant lesions in women undergoing hysteroscopic polypectomy. DATA SOURCE: We developed the search using PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE databases to identify papers published between 2000- January 2019. The research strategy used on Pubmed was: ("polyps" (MESH) OR "endometrial polyp*") AND ("malignancy" OR

The effects of person-centered or other supportive interventions in older women with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures-a systematic review of the literature.

Vertebral compression fracture (VCF) is a common fragility fracture and the starting point of a lasting, painful, disabling condition. The aim was to summarize evidence of person-centered/non-medical interventions supporting women with VCF. Results show small numbers of studies with only probable effect on function, pain, QoL, fear of falling, and psychological symptoms. The vertebral compression fracture (VCF) caused by osteoporosis is the third most common fragility fracture worldwide. Previously, it was believed that the pain caused by VCF was self-subsiding within weeks or a few months pos

Contact Lens Associated Bacterial Keratitis: Common Organisms, Antibiotic Therapy, and Global Resistance Trends: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Contact lens wearing has been increased globally during recent decades, which is one of the main risk factors for developing microbial keratitis. Microbial keratitis is a severe and dangerous condition that causes cornea inflammation. It can lead to corneal scarring and perforation or even endophthalmitis and visual loss if it remains untreated. Among bacterial, fungal, protozoal, and viral agents which can cause microbial keratitis, bacteria are the most common cause. Therefore, in this study, we aim to find common causative bacteria, sensitivity, and resistance to antibiotics a

Osteopathic manipulative medicine lymphatic drainage techniques for venous insufficiency and peripheral arterial disease: a review.

CONTEXT: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are associated with significant morbidity, often manifesting as edema, pain, and nonhealing ulcers. Despite standard therapies such as compression, pharmacologic management, and surgical interventions, recurrence rates remain high, and outcomes are limited. Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) lymphatic drainage techniques, including pedal pump maneuvers, aim to enhance venous return, reduce interstitial stasis, and improve overall vascular and lymphatic function. Such approaches may complement conventional th

Chordoma Genetic Aberrations and Targeted Therapies Panorama: A Systematic Literature Review.

Background: Chordomas pose a challenge in treatment due to their local invasiveness, high recurrence, and potential lethality. Despite being slow-growing and rarely metastasizing, these tumors often resist conventional chemotherapies (CTs) and radiotherapies (RTs), making surgical resection a crucial intervention. However, achieving radical resection for chordomas is seldom possible, presenting therapeutic challenges. The accurate diagnosis of these tumors is vital for their distinct prognoses, yet differentiation is hindered by overlapping radiological and histopathological features. Fortunat

Customized titanium reconstruction of post-traumatic orbital wall defects: a review of 22 cases.

The authors present the clinical results of their method of customized reconstruction of orbital wall defects using titanium mesh or sheet. High resolution computed tomography (CT) data are imported and processed to create a three-dimensional (3D) image which is used to reconstruct the orbital defect. Mirror imaging of the air in the contralateral maxillary sinus is used to overcome artefact defects in the floor. A stereolithographic model is constructed, from which titanium mesh or sheet is shaped and sized to the required contours for implantation. Twenty-two patients were treated using this

Late Reconstruction of the Orbit With Patient-Specific Implants Using Computer-Aided Planning and Navigation.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of orbital deformities is a challenging task. Virtual 3-dimensional (3D) planning and the use of patient-specific implants (PSIs) could improve anatomic and functional outcomes in the orbital region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of patients who underwent late orbital reconstruction from 2009 to 2013. To be included in the study, patients had a unilateral orbital deformity by involvement of at least 2 orbital wall defects. No orbital osteotomies could be used to correct the deformity. All patients underwent 3D virtual treatment planning. Th
