Serum unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) levels > 205.2 mumol/L were present in 120 of 143 cases of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. Sixty-five per cent (78/120) cases showed bilirubin crystals in the neutrophils of Leishman's stained smears from EDTA blood. The proportion of crystal positive (CP) neutrophils was higher in septicaemia than in Haemolytic Disease of Newborn (HDN). Mortality rate was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in CP septicaemic cases when compared with those which were crystal negative (CN).

Three cases of a necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but life- and limb-threatening infection, were treated in the Department of Surgery at the University Hospital of the Ruhr University Bochum (MHH) between October 1992 and January 1994. We compare our experiences with regard to bacteriological etiology, risk factors, localization, and place of entry, course, therapy and mortality with those in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the etiology, management, and maternal and perinatal outcome in patients with septic shock during pregnancy.
METHODS: In 18 patients with septic shock during pregnancy, the criteria for the diagnosis were sepsis-induced hypotension unresponsive to adequate fluid resuscitation and requirement for vasopressors.

Inhalation injury, a major contributor to burn-related mortality, has been difficult to quantify. A scoring system paralleling current adult respiratory distress syndrome systems has the potential to distinguish survivors from nonsurvivors. The utility of the PaO2/FiO2 (P/F) ratio in predicting injury severity was first examined. Retrospective assessment of treatment results in larynx and hypopharynx carcinoma treated in ENT department from 1970 to 1991 was undertaken. Linear function and square trend were used in analysis. The patients survival trend after the treatment of carcinoma and recurrence appearance trend were estimated. 485 patients with adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia operated in our hospital. 283 cases were treated with total gastrectomy, and 202 cases were treated with proximal subtotal gastrectomy.
