Tumor location and patient age predict biological signatures of high-grade gliomas.

Prognostic factors for high-grade gliomas include patient age, IDH1 mutation, MGMT methylation, and Ki67 value. We assessed the predictive role of topographic location of gliomas for their biological signatures. Collecting all neuroradiological and histological data of patients with histologically proven HGG, we performed a retrospective monocentric study. A predictive value of frontal location for a lower Ki67 value (especially in the left hemisphere) and mutation of IDH1 (especially in the right hemisphere) was found. Temporal location was predictive for IDH1 wild-type. Involvement of the pa

Disorders of memory.

This paper reviews disorders of memory. After a brief survey of the clinical varieties of the amnesic syndrome, transient and persistent, selected theoretical issues will be considered by posing a series of questions. (i) What is impaired and what is spared in anterograde amnesia? (ii) Do temporal lobe, diencephalic and frontal lobe amnesias differ? (iii) How independently semantic is semantic memory? (iv) What determines the pattern and extent of retrograde memory loss? (v) Can retrograde amnesia ever be "isolated"? (vi) Does psychogenic amnesia involve the same mechanisms as organic amnesia?…

Perfusion ECD/SPECT in the characterization of cognitive deficits in Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive abnormalities have been reported in a large percentage of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Often cognitive changes are sub-clinical and involve frontal lobe function. In other occasions they develop into full dementia. Functional neuroimaging may help characterize these abnormalities. We have studied brain perfusion with SPECT and the tracer ECD in 44 PD patients, 22 presenting with normal cognitive function and 22 with clinical and neuropsychological signs of dementia. Compared with 21 healthy controls, demented PD patients showed significant perfusion decrements in all corti

White matter correlates of temporal discounting in older adults.

Temporal discounting, the tendency to select a smaller reward offered sooner over a larger reward offered at a later time, has been associated with a number of real-world decision-making outcomes important for health and wellbeing. Neurobiological mechanisms supporting temporal discounting have been explored among younger participants, and these have considered white matter integrity. However, the white matter correlates of temporal discounting in older adults are unclear. We hypothesized that greater temporal discounting would be associated with poorer white matter integrity measures, more sp

Anterior selective amygdalohippocampectomy: technical description and microsurgical anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: We introduce a technique for performing a selective amygdalohippocampectomy (AH) through a minisupraorbital approach. METHODS: A … LUSION: The anterior route for selective AH is a logical and straightforward approach to the mesial temporal lobe. Compared with other variations, it is less invasive and destructive, especially in terms of the fibers of the optic pathway, temporal stem, and lateral temporal neocortex.

Evidence for an occipito-temporal tract underlying visual recognition in picture naming.

A 24-year-old male underwent awake surgery for a lesion in the left dominant basal temporo-occipital junction. During the intraoperative functional mapping using picture naming, cortical stimulation near the visual word form area led to visual paraphasia. These visual paraphasias were also elicited axonally by subcortical stimulation at the anterior wall of the cavity. We propose to discuss the existence of this "visual object form area", devoted to the visual recognition of object, and its links with the closely related "visual word form area". We suggest that its afference, whose stimulation

Atrial fibrillation as an independent predictor of early epileptic seizures after acute ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Early epileptic seizures (EES) are a known complication of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and are associated with unfavorable outco … Patients with EES were older and more frequently had cortical involvement, particularly frontal and temporal lobe lesions. Higher stroke severity (NIHSS > 10), hemorrhagic transformation, atrial fibrillation, and hypertension were significantly more common in the EES group. Mortality was higher among patients with EES. In multivariable analysis, independent pre …

A dual-modality study on the neural features of cochlear implant simulated tone and consonant perception.

Accurately perceiving lexical tones and consonants is critical for understanding speech in tonal languages. Cochlear implant (CI) users exhi … rony in the δ and θ frequency bands than channelized speech, which was more pronounced in the right temporal lobe. This finding was also observed with "za" consonants. fNIRS results showed stronger right temporal lobe activation for channelized speech, suggesting that the brain requires greater auditory effort to process channelized speech. Combining both modal …

Anti-Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD) 65 Encephalitis Mistaken for Herpes Encephalitis and Hashimoto's Encephalitis (HE): A Case Report.

Autoimmune encephalitis is increasingly recognized in clinical practice. We are presenting a 72-year-old female patient who initially presented with a new onset seizure with temporal lobe abnormality on imaging. This was initially attributed to herpes encephalitis although herpes polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was negative. The patient was treated with acyclovir and antiepileptic medication (AEM) with some clinical improvement. She presented again with refractory seizure evolving to status epilepticus. Escalation of AEMs was pursued and positive anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibody prompted…

Glycolysis inhibition partially resets epilepsy-induced alterations in the dorsal hippocampus-basolateral amygdala circuit involved in anxiety-like behavior.

Pharmacoresistant temporal lobe epilepsy affects millions of people around the world with uncontrolled seizures and comorbidities, like anxiety, being the most problematic aspects calling for novel therapies. The intrahippocampal kainic acid model of temporal lobe epilepsy is an appropriate rodent model to evaluate the effects of novel interventions, including glycolysis inhibition, on epilepsy-induced alterations. Here, we investigated kainic acid-induced changes in the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) and basolateral amygdala (BLA) circuit and the efficiency of a glycolysis inhibitor, 2-deoxy D-glu…

Physical activity, biomarkers of brain pathologies and dementia risk: Results from the Memento clinical cohort.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to examine whether physical activity moderates the association between biomarkers of brain pathologies and dementia risk. METHODS: From the Memento cohort, we analyzed 1044 patients with mild cognitive impairment, aged 60 and older. Self-reported physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Biomarkers of brain pathologies comprised medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTA), white matter lesions, and plasma amyloid beta (Aβ)42/40 and phosphorylated tau181. Association between physical activity and risk of developing dementia ove…

Connectome-based predictive modeling predicts paranoid ideation in young men with paranoid personality disorder: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Paranoid personality disorder (PPD), a mental disorder that affects interpersonal relationships and work, is frequently neglected during dia … n tests. The model constructed based on the negative prediction network involving the limbic system-temporal lobe was observed to have significant predictive ability for paranoia scores, whereas the model constructed using the positive and combined prediction network had no significant predictive ability. In conclusion, using CPM, whole-brain rs-FC predicted th …

Activity in perirhinal and entorhinal cortex predicts perceived visual similarities among category exemplars with highest precision.

Vision neuroscience has made great strides in understanding the hierarchical organization of object representations along the ventral visual … poral regions, namely in perirhinal (PrC) and anterolateral entorhinal cortex (alErC) in the medial temporal lobe. To address this issue with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we administered a modified 1-back task that required discrimination between category exemplars as well as categorization. Further, we obtained observer-specific ratings of per …

Endoscopic-Assisted Keyhole Middle Cranial Fossa Approach for Small Vestibular Schwannomas.

The classical middle cranial fossa approach (MCFA) for vestibular schwannoma (VS) removal often requires a large incision and craniotomy, excessive temporal lobe manipulation, and a longer recovery. We describe a keyhole MCFA (KMCFA) with endoscopic assistance that allows for adequate access with minimal temporal lobe manipulation, resulting in a fast recovery and an invisible scar. Eight sides of four cadaveric heads were dissected through the endoscopic-assisted KMCFA to access the internal auditory canal (IAC). Furthermore, five patients with intracanalicular VS underwent tumor removal with…

GABAergic circuits of the basolateral amygdala and generation of anxiety after traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has reached epidemic proportions around the world and is a major public health concern in the United States. Approximately 2.8 million individuals sustain a traumatic brain injury and are treated in an Emergency Department yearly in the U.S., and about 50,000 of them die. Persistent symptoms develop in 10-15% of the cases including neuropsychiatric disorders. Anxiety is the second most common neuropsychiatric disorder that develops in those with persistent neuropsychiatric symptoms after TBI. Abnormalities or atrophy in the temporal lobe has been shown in the overw…
