Computed tomography imaging and clinical features of congenital hepatoblastoma: A retrospective analysis.

Congenital hepatoblastoma (CHB) is the most common hepatic malignant tumor of fetus or neonates, but few studies focusing on the radiological characteristics of CHB have been reported to date.To investigate the characteristic clinical and computed tomography (CT) findings of CHB to facilitate recognition and noninvasive diagnosis.Medical records of 7 patients with CHB were retrospectively reviewed. The demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were extracted from the electronic medical records. Two pediatric radiologists evaluated the abdominal CT examinations for the hepatic tumor location, …

[Pulmonary Mucormycosis with Reversed Halo Sign on Computed Tomography of Patient with Leukemia].

The patient was a male in his 60s, who had undergone bone marrow transplantation because of lymphoblastic leukemia. He suffered from chest pain two weeks after the transplantation. A chest computed tomography(CT) showed reversed halo sign( RHS) in the right upper lobe of the lung. A bronchoscopic lung biopsy revealed mycelia, and the patient was diagnosed with pulmonary mucormycosis. Although antifungal drugs were administered, no significant improvements were observed. A right upper lobectomy of the lung was successfully performed, and no postoperative complications occurred. Pathological exa…

Postmortem computed tomography of gas gangrene with aortic gas in a dialysis patient.

Recently, postmortem imaging is sometimes used as an alternative to conventional autopsy. However, there are few case reports of postmortem imaging of dialysis patients. Here, we report a fatal case of gas gangrene involving a 76-year-old man who underwent dialysis. He died suddenly before a diagnosis could be established. Immediately after his death, postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) revealed gas accumulation in his right upper extremity and ascending aorta. Gas gangrene progresses rapidly and may sometimes result in sudden death before it is diagnosed. In this case, PMCT findings were us…

Review of methods and applications of attenuation coefficient measurements with optical coherence tomography.

The optical attenuation coefficient (AC), an important tissue parameter that measures how quickly incident light is attenuated when passing through a medium, has been shown to enable quantitative analysis of tissue properties from optical coherence tomography (OCT) signals. Successful extraction of this parameter would facilitate tissue differentiation and enhance the diagnostic value of OCT. In this review, we discuss the physical and mathematical basis of AC extraction from OCT data, including current approaches used in modeling light scattering in tissue and in AC estimation. We also report…

Anaesthetic management of an infant with tracheomalacia scheduled for computed tomography angiography: A challenge.

Tracheomalacia is characterised by collapse of the tracheal wall with respiration. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) can be utilised for evaluation of airway abnormalities but providing sedation/anaesthesia for CTA in such a case carries the risk of airway catastrophe. We describe the anaesthetic management of an infant who had tracheomalacia with >90% collapse in lower two third of the intrathoracic trachea as diagnosed on videobronchoscpy and was scheduled for CTA.

Characterization of scintillating fibers for use as positron detector in positron emission tomography.

PURPOSE: Manual and automatic blood sampling at different time intervals is considered the gold standard to determine the arterial input function (AIF) in dynamic positron emission tomography (PET). However, blood sampling is characterized by poor time resolution and is an invasive procedure. The aim of this study was to characterize the scintillating fibers used to develop a non-invasive positron detector. METHODS: The detector consists of a scintillating fiber coupled at each end to transmission fiber-optic cables that are connected to photo multiplier tubes in a dual readout setup. The det…

Spectrum of computed tomography manifestations of appendiceal neoplasms: acute appendicitis and beyond.

Appendiceal neoplasms are rare and often only discovered incidentally during surgery performed for acute appendicitis. Computed tomography (CT) has been demonstrated to be a reliable technique for accurately establishing the preoperative diagnosis of appendiceal neoplasms that manifest as acute appendicitis through the presence of certain imaging findings. Other manifestations of appendiceal neoplasms include appendiceal mass, mucocoele, localised abscess formation, ileus, increasing abdominal girth from pseudomyxoma peritonei, and intussusception. This pictorial essay illustrates varied CT fi…

Optical coherence tomography of onychomycosis: proposed terminology and a suggestion of practical usage.

Onychomycosis is the most common cause of nail changes accounting for about half of all nail diseases. It is important to diagnose the fungal pathogen to prescribe adequate treatment, but as genus- and species-specific diagnostic tests can be time consuming and expensive, it is crucial to obtain representative tissue during nail scrapings. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging tool enabling real-time imaging of skin and tissue. Pilot studies using OCT have described morphological characteristics of onychomycosis, though diagnostic criteria of onychomycosis and other nail…

Diagnostic performance of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in the evaluation of glioma.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying glioma grade through imaging allows clinicians to recommend and accurately direct treatment. We sought to quantify the utility of FDG-PET/CT (18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography), alone and in combination with MRI, in identifying high-grade regions of glioma. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of patients who had an FDG-PET/CT performed as part of the workup of suspected glioma or in follow-up of known glioma. FDG-PET/CT scans were reviewed and uptake in the identifiable lesion coded as none, diffusely or focally increased. Pa…
