Early regional changes in retina and choroid of chicks following monocular hemifield form deprivation.

To investigate regional changes in the chick retina and choroid after hemifield form deprivation (HFD). Ten chicks were randomly and equally divided into a temporal retinal deprivation (TRD) and nasal retinal deprivation (NRD) group. HFD was induced with half-lateral translucent plastic goggles in the right eye; the left eye was kept untreated. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) images obtained at 0, 3, and 72 hours (h) were analyzed using customized software. After 72 h of TRD, the retinal thickness (RT) of the treated eyes was significantly less than that of the fellow eyes i

Correlation Between Laser Speckle Flowgraphy and OCT-Derived Retinal and Choroidal Metrics in Healthy Human Eye.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) signals and the quantitative metrics derived from optical coherence tomography (OCT) in normal eyes. METHODS: LSFG, OCT, and OCT angiography (OCTA) imaging were performed on normal participants using a custom-designed LSFG system and a commercial swept-source OCT system. Mean (PWM) and amplitude (PWA) of the LSFG pulse waveform were selected to quantify the LSFG signals. Retinal and choroidal maps were obtained using the standard 6 × 6 mm OCT and OCTA scans. Structural and vascular metrics maps, including thicknes

Choroidal vascularity index: a step towards software as a medical device.

The choroidal vascularity index (CVI) is a relatively new parameter, calculated off optical coherence tomography (OCT) images, for the quantitative evaluation of choroid vascularity. It is defined as the ratio of vascular area to the total choroidal area, presented as a percentage. The choroid is an important vascular bed, often implicated in ocular and systemic conditions. Since the introduction of CVI, multiple studies have evaluated its efficacy as a tool for disease prognostication and monitoring progression, with promising results. The CVI was born out of the need for more robust and accu

Choroidal thickness in patients with cardiovascular disease: A review.

The choroid is a vascular network that supplies the bulk of the retina's oxygen and nutrient supply. Prior studies have associated changes in the thickness of the choroid with the presence of various cardiovascular diseases. This is the first review that summarizes current knowledge on the relationship between choroidal thickness and cardiovascular diseases while highlighting important findings. Acute hypertension increases choroidal thickness. Chronic hypertension and heart failure may decrease choroidal thickness, but controversy exists. Both coronary artery disease and carotid artery stenos

Noninvasive in vivo optical detection of biofilm in the human middle ear.

Otitis media (OM), a middle-ear infection, is the most common childhood illness treated by pediatricians. If inadequately treated, OM can result in long-term chronic problems persisting into adulthood. Children with chronic OM or recurrent OM often have conductive hearing loss and communication difficulties and require surgical treatment. Tympanostomy tube insertion, the placement of a small drainage tube in the tympanic membrane (TM), is the most common surgical procedure performed in children under general anesthesia. Recent clinical studies have shown evidence of a direct correspondence bet
