Urogenital tuberculosis (TB) is a common late manifestation of an earlier symptomatic or asymptomatic pulmonary TB infection. A latency period ranging from 5 to 40 years between the time of the initial infection and the expression of urogenital TB frequently occurs. As one of the most common sites of involvement of extrapulmonary TB, urogenital TB accounts for 15% to 20% of the infections. We present a patient who had culture-negative active tubercular kidney disease due to silent tuberculous infection. Our case demonstrates the limitations of noninvasive testing in establishing the diagnosis

Tuberculous meningitis is a difficult diagnosis to make. The presenting symptoms, signs, and laboratory values are often nonspecific and can be attributed to other underlying conditions. Imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis can be more helpful. Extra pulmonary tuberculosis is not uncommon, and tuberculous meningitis represents 5% of extrapulmonary cases in the United States with the risk for tuberculosis increased six times for foreign-born persons. We report the case of a foreign-born cirrhotic patient with tuberculous meningitis whose diagnosis was likely delayed because of signs and sym

The nitro-blue tetrasolum (NBT) test was used for the study of the bactericidal capacity of blood monocytes in 30 healthy subjects and 86 pulmonary tuberculosis patients. The monocyte capacity of tuberculosis patients to restore NBT in the process of phagocytosis was found to be reduced. The NPT test parameters in the absence of cell stimulation were the same in both groups of the examined subjects. Administration of 50 TU of tuberculin subcutaneously is accompanied by the lowered capacity of monocytes to restore NPT during phagocytosis in patients with minimal activity of the tuberculous proc

The case of a patient submitted to sonographic abdominal examination because of recent onset of fever, abdominal pain and weight loss, with the finding of multiple enlarged lymph nodes along great vessels, is reported. Because of the negativity of noninvasive procedures, the patient underwent laparatomy and biopsy. The histologic and bacteriologic diagnosis of tuberculous lymphnodes was unexpected, as the patient was unreactive to the tuberculin skin test and had no signs of active pulmonary tuberculosis. Although uncommon, tuberculosis must be included in the differential diagnosis of subdiap

In two patients with extensive pulmonary tuberculosis who developed hypercalcaemia and hypokalaemia the hypercalcaemia appeared related to the use of small doses of vitamin D, which suggested patients with tuberculosis were hypersensitive to vitamin D. They were thus similar to patients with sarcoidosis, and it is interesting that the Kveim test result was positive in both cases. The hypercalcaemia was quickly suppressed with steroids. Hyperparathyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, Addison's disease, and multiple myeloma were excluded on clinical grounds and by the appropriate tests. The hypokalaemia wa

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is the clinical entity that is gaining more recognition. Still, it may emerge in various ways, making it difficult to diagnose. Even though pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common variety, EPTB may affect many organ systems and often mimics other diseases, therefore postponing diagnosis, and treatment. Five rare types of EPTB, including testicular tuberculosis, esophageal tuberculosis, psoas abscess with spinal involvement, tuberculous mastitis, and parotid gland tuberculosis, are the main subjects of this case series. All patients who were HIV-negative wer

SETTING: Despite declining tuberculosis mortality per head of population, there was little change in tuberculosis case fatality in England and Wales from 1974 to 1987.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the trend in tuberculosis case fatality for England and Wales from 1988 to 2001.
DESIGN: Annual deaths to notifications ratios (DNRs) for tuberculosis were calculated using published notification and mortality data, and analysed by age group and three disease sites (central nervous system [CNS], respiratory and other). In this investigation, 94 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis obtained over a 3-year period (1996-1998) from French Guiana were characterized by spoligotyping and IS6110-RFLP and the patterns obtained were compared with genotypes representing the worldwide diversity in an international spoligotyping database (n = 4269) and a IS6110-RFLP database (n = 4189). All the clustered isolates giving < or = 6 copies of IS6110 were further typed using the double-repetitive element (DRE)-PCR. The results obtained underlined the highly diverse nature of the M. tuberculosis population in French

We report two singular cases of sudden death in which the cause was advanced tuberculosis infection. In the first case, a 24-year-old man died suddenly following massive hemoptysis due to erosion of the pulmonary vessels. The second case involved a 29-year-old man who died unexpectedly from asphyxia secondary to hemoptysis caused by fibrocavitatory tuberculosis. Toxicological screening and HIV testing were negative in both cases. Medico-legal autopsy, combined with detailed histological examination, was essential to determine the exact cause of death.

The global increase in incidence of Tuberculosis (TB) is returning to be a major health issue grabbing a universal concern. Although extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) has a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, primary involvement of the adrenal glands along with spine without pulmonary affection has been rarely reported. We report a case of successfully treated adult Asian male patient presented with primary adrenal TB, complicated with chronic adrenal insufficiency accompanied with upper lumber spinal TB. We also present the follow up of our patient after three years.

Tuberculosis is still being a health problem worldwide despite it being a curable disease. Although the only way to prevent its spread is treating cases of active pulmonary disease, we still do not have reliable markers that help us to evaluate the response to anti-tuberculosis drugs. Currently, a patient with negative conversion in the culture of the sputum is considered as cured; however, several studies have questioned the usefulness of this test given that some individuals persist with data of clinical activity despite their negative culture. A couple of recent studies based on sophisticat

OBJECTIVES: Intestinal obstruction due to tuberculosis is a rare form of mechanical bowel obstruction. The objectives of this study were to determine the clinical features, to evaluate the role of surgery and to choose procedures in management of this disease.
METHODS: In this 7-year retrospective study (from 1992 to 1998), 23 patients (20 males, three females) were included, accounting for 4.5% of all mechanical intestinal obstructions. More than 80% of the patients had a clinical picture of lower small bowel obstruction, while 90.5% of patients had advanced pulmonary tuberculosis.
RESULTS:

Amikacin was found to be a potent inhibitor of clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro. The drug was also active against some, but not all, strains of M. intracellulare, M. kansasii and rapidly growing mycobacteria in concentrations that may be attained clinically. Activity was independent of susceptibility or resistance of the isolates to commonly used antituberculosis agents. Groups of mice were infected intravenously with M. tuberculosis H37Rv and then treated daily with amikacin, streptomycin, isoniazid or kanamycin. One third of the mice in each group were killed 30, 60 a

RUTI is a therapeutic vaccine that is generated from detoxified and liposomed Mycobacterium tuberculosis cell fragments that has demonstrated its efficacy in the control of bacillus reactivation after short-term chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to characterize the cellular immune response generated after the therapeutic administration of RUTI and to corroborate the lack of toxicity of the vaccine. Mouse and guinea pig experimental models were infected with a low-dose M. tuberculosis aerosol. RUTI-treated animals showed the lowest bacillary load in both experimental models. RUTI also dec

INTRODUCTION: Melioidosis, caused by the soil saprophyte B. pseudomallei, is a 'neglected' infectious disease in many Asian countries. It remained undiagnosed or misdiagnosed in India for long due to a lack of awareness and facilities to diagnose the disease; however, it is slowly gaining the status of an emerging disease recently. The disease is well known as a great mimicker, as the presentations are very similar to many other tropical diseases, and more importantly, to tuberculosis .
METHODOLOGY: A prospective observational study was conducted from January 2016 - December 2018 to find the

PURPOSE: Orbital tuberculosis (TB) is a rare extra-pulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis and its clinical diagnosis poses unique challenges, with potential for destructive complications as well as social and public health implications. The aim of this study is to report our experience of patients presenting with orbital TB and to identify common aspects.
METHODS: A systematic search for mandatory notifications of orbital tuberculosis between January 01, 1994 and December 12, 2016 was undertaken in the Victorian Tuberculosis database. In addition, members of the Australian and New Zealand So

Cutaneous Tuberculosis is a rare form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. It is a skin infection typically caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is more prevalent in TB-endemic areas and immunocompromised individuals. Cutaneous TB has various manifestations and can resemble a multitude of other skin conditions. The disease can be further classified by the route of infection and the bacillary load, which adds another layer of complexity to the diagnostic process. Awareness of cutaneous TB can prompt earlier initiation of microbiological and histopathological workup for the disease, thereby prev

Tracheobronchial tuberculosis (TBTB) is a key cause of long-term lung function impairment and diminished quality of life in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Although the Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of tracheobronchial tuberculosis (2025 Edition) systematically establishes a new diagnosis and treatment framework, prevalent issues in clinical practice-including insufficient awareness, delayed diagnosis, and non-standardized technical application-severely constrain the improvement of TBTB treatment outcomes. This article aims to integrate the core updates of the new guidelines with
