Clinicopathological details of 52 cases of total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (TAPVD) taken from pediatric autopsy files from hospitals in Adelaide (Australia) Oxford and Edinburgh (United Kingdom) between 1957 and 1990 are presented. The patients ranged in age from a stillborn girl to a 15-month-old boy, with 42 cases (81%) dying in the first 3 months of life. BACKGROUND: Operative repair of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) remains challenging due to risks of sinus node dysfunction, baffle obstruction, and superior vena cava (SVC) obstruction.
METHODS: Traditional or modified Warden procedures were performed in 75 of 318 consecutive patients (24%) with PAPVC repaired surgically at our institution during 1993 to 2021. Clinical characteristics, echocardiography data, operative details, and early and late outcomes were collected. Cumulative incidence of reintervention and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis are reported.

Results of treatment of 148 patients, in whom deep veins thrombosis of v. cava inferior (VCI) system had occurred, were analyzed. Cava-filter (CF) was applied in 50 patients. Thirty hearts from fetuses with visceral heterotaxy were examined to determine the range of cardiac malformations. By examining the morphology of the atrial appendages, 20 hearts were identified as having left isomerism (67%) and 10 hearts right isomerism (33%). Uterine leiomyoma invading internal iliac vein and consequently disseminating into the right atrium is an extremely rare condition, and surgical strategy is controversial. Here, we reported a specific case with successful surgical resection through one-stage total hysterectomy, bilateral oophorectomy, and the intracardiovascular lesion. This procedure would be an optimal choice for uterine leiomyoma invading inferior vena cava and spreading to right atrium.

We report the first-stage percutaneous palliation in a newborn with a rare heterotaxy syndrome variant including interrupted inferior vena cava, partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, and restrictive interatrial communication. Virtual reality imaging aided visualisation, decision-making, and planning. Successful atrial septoplasty performed via the internal jugular vein and anomalous pulmonary vein was followed by stenting of ductus arteriosus.

Two Angus calves housed in the Swiss Alps for two months were presented with brisket edema, jugular distension, and diarrhea. Hematological and biochemical examination included elevated concentration of erythrocytes and increased activity of liver enzymes. Ultrasonography revealed small amount of pleural effusion hepatomegaly and congested caudal vena cava. The diagnosis of congestive heart failure secondary to high-altitude disease was confirmed in pathology.

A 2-month-old boy with a single ventricle underwent cardiac catheterisation. Inferior vena cava angiography at the end of the examination revealed local stenosis, flexion, and connection to the right hepatic vein. Six hours after catheterisation, he went into haemorrhagic shock. CT revealed contrast extravasation into the liver with ascites. A precise diagnosis of vascular anomalies is mandatory, especially in patients with heterotaxy syndrome.

An 83-year-old female presented with progressive dyspnea, a non-productive cough and right pleural effusion consistent with exudate. Rapid staining and PCR for mycobacteria, culture and cytology were negative. A thoracic computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a solid lesion, 53 mm in diameter, with an epicenter in the right crus of the diaphragm, both diaphragmatic and hepatic infiltration and compression of the inferior vena cava.

We demonstrate a case, in which endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) was useful for determining the diagnosis of lesions of retroperitoneal fibrosis. In our case, accessing the retroperitoneal lesions by conventional percutaneous biopsy procedures was not feasible due to the difficulty of avoiding the inferior vena cava and ureter. We believe that our case demonstrates a unique approach for performing histological analysis in a challenging case.

Amoebic liver abscess is common in children in developing countries due to lack of hygiene and sanitary conditions. Inferior vena cava thrombosis is a rare complication of this disease, with only a few cases reported in the literature, where this thrombus led to pulmonary thromboembolism. We report the case of a 7-year-old child with amoebic liver abscess who developed pulmonary thromboembolism and was promptly diagnosed and managed.

Cyanosis in a newborn is commonly due to intracardiac shunts or duct-dependent lesions. Systemic venous anomalies are uncommon and sinus venous atrial septal defects do not usually present with cyanosis. We report the case of a 4-month-old female with persistent hypoxemia due to a right superior vena cava overriding a superior sinus venous atrial septal defect resulting in a right to left shunt.

A 68-year-old woman, previously treated with embolization of the thoracic duct with Lipiodol (an ethiodized oil injection) and cyanoacrylate glue (a topical tissue adhesive), was admitted with an asymptomatic mass in the inferior vena cava (IVC) and right atrium. The mass was surgically removed, and pathologic analysis revealed a Lipiodol-containing thrombus. To our knowledge, this is the first clinicopathologic report of Lipiodol-induced thrombus presenting as an intracavitary mass.

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are benign hamartomatous tumours of the kidney that occur sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis. Although they are benign lesions, larger tumours can, rarely, behave aggressively and have extrarenal extension. Extension of an AML into the renal veins and inferior vena cava (IVC) is rare. We report a rare case of an AML with extension into the renal vein and IVC up to the right atrium that was successfully managed surgically.

Percutaneous transcatheter closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) remains challenging when femoral venous approach is not available. We describe the successful closure of a PFO using the right internal jugular venous approach and a catheter delivery system with a reshaped tip in a patient with a PFO, recurrent stroke, recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding, bilateral deep venous thrombosis and thrombosed bilateral inferior vena cava filter.

A 30-month-old female was admitted with recurrent spells and severe cyanosis. Preoperative echocardiography was diagnostic of tetralogy of Fallot with an atrial septal defect of the primum type, unroofed coronary sinus, and a left superior vena cava draining into the left atrium. At surgery the patient was found to have a complete atrioventricular septal defect in addition to these anomalies. Complete anatomical correction was achieved through the right atrial approach.
