The medical records of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans who entered the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) residential recovery program were retrospectively reviewed for presence of diminished libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory delay. Of 53 patients, 39 reported diminished libido, 26 reported erectile dysfunction, and 8 reported ejaculatory dysfunction. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C; 0-12 points) was included on health surveys in a cohort of 32,622 general medicine outpatients from seven US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the risk of fracture (mean follow-up = 1.6 years) by AUDIT-C category. After adjusting for confounders, AUDIT-C scores of 8-9 and 10-12 were associated with significantly increased risks for subsequent fractures, HR (95% CI) = 1.37 (1.03 to 1.83) and 1.79 (1.38 to 2.33) respectively. Patterns of reinstitutionalization following psychiatric hospitalization for individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) vary by medical and psychiatric health care settings. This report presents rates of reinstitutionalization across care settings for 35,527 patients following psychiatric discharge in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health system, a national health care system. Twenty-six cases of colonic volvulus from the University of Kentucky Medical Center and the Lexington Veterans Administration Hospital, covering a ten-year period, are presented. Overall mortality was 19 per cent (5 of 26 patients). Cecal volvulus carried the greatest mortality, 30 per cent (3 of 10 patients), whereas sigmoidal volvulus had relatively low mortality rate of 7 per cent (1 or 15). The antihistamines diphenhydramine and methapyrilene were compared with pentobarbital for hypnotic effect in two Veterans Administration Hospital populations using subjective-response methods. To assess the association of illicit drug use and USA300 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia, a multicenter study was conducted at 4 Veterans Affairs medical centers during 2004-2008. Tracheoesophageal puncture prostheses (TEPPs) are an integral aspect of speech rehabilitation for many patients who have undergone total laryngectomy. Because one flange of the prosthesis sits in the trachea and the other in the esophagus, these devices can be aspirated or swallowed if dislodged. Thirty-three cases were diagnosed in a series of 1,290 stool examinations in 971 patients at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee.
