Effects of risperidone on core symptoms of autistic disorder based on childhood autism rating scale: an open label study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of risperidone in patients afflicted by autistic disorder especially with regards to its three core symptoms, including "relating to others", "communication skills", and "stereotyped behaviors" based on Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An 8-week open-label study of risperidone for treatment of autistic disorder in children 4-17 years old was designed. Risperidone dose titration was as follow: 0.02 mg/kg/day at the first week, 0.04 mg/kg/day at the second week, and 0.06 mg/kg/day at the third week a

A new chronic itch model accompanied by skin lesions in hairless mice.

The present study was performed to develop a new chronic itch model accompanied by skin lesions using hairless mice. The effects of some drugs on the itch response in this model were also studied. 2,4,6-Trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB) was applied repeatedly on the rostral back of sensitized hairless mice every 2 days for 54 days, and the scratching behavior was observed on day 0, 18, 36 and 54. The skin symptoms and total IgE level were also observed. The number of scratches observed at 24 and 48 h after TNCB challenge was increased gradually from day 18 to day 54. An intimate relationship was ob

Aggression and psychopathology in treatment-resistant inpatients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.

Positive psychotic symptoms, such as threat/"control-override" delusions or command hallucinations, have been related to aggression in patients with schizophrenia. However, retrospective data collection has hampered evaluation of the direct influence of psychopathology on aggressive behavior. In this study, we monitored aggressive behavior and psychopathology prospectively and in close temporal proximity in 157 treatment-resistant inpatients diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder participating in a 14-week double-blind clinical trial. Aggressive behavior was rated wit

Topiramate antagonizes MK-801 in an animal model of schizophrenia.

The phencyclidine (PCP) model of schizophrenia suggests that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor hypofunction and its consequences may play an important role in the pathophysiology of this psychiatric disorder. Moreover, the schizophreniform psychosis caused by PCP resembles schizophrenia in all of the relevant domains of psychopathology, especially negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction. Because of interest in the PCP model and possible NMDA receptor hypofunction in schizophrenia, animal behaviors elicited by PCP and its analogues have been characterized. These preclinical models may se

Risk factors for the development of problem gambling in individuals with ADHD symptoms: The mediating roles of gambling engagement and ADHD characteristics.

Gambling disorder is a behavioral addiction characterized by impulsivity and problem gambling, and it often cooccurs with ADHD. This study investigated the associations between ADHD symptoms and problem gambling, focusing on the roles of various forms of gambling engagement. Based on data from the JASTIS 2024 survey, which included 29,268 valid respondents, this cross-sectional study explored how ADHD symptoms are related to the prevalence of problem gambling and specific forms of gambling engagement. Problem gambling was assessed using the Problem Gambling Severity Index, and ADHD symptoms we

Neuropsychiatric sequelae of COVID-19 in pediatric populations: The higher prevalence and related factors in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric individuals might exhibit enduring neuropsychiatric symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, there was a significant gap in comparative analyses between children and adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictive factors of post-COVID-19 neuropsychiatric symptoms in both children and adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 180 individuals aged 18 years and younger, categorized into child (aged between 6 and 9 years) and adolescent groups (aged between 12 and 18 years). Questionnaire-based surveys collected sociodemog

Network analysis in depressed adolescents with suicidal ideation: the role of depression, anxiety, and childhood abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent depression is a global public health issue strongly associated with suicidal ideation and childhood abuse. Although family systems and ecological theories highlight the multilevel influences of family environment on mental health, most studies focus on overall symptom scores rather than examining how specific forms of abuse relate to distinct symptoms. Employing symptom network analysis, this study investigates the interactions among depressive symptoms, anxiety, and childhood abuse in adolescents diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicidal ideation. Children's emotion recognition and aggression: A multi-cohort longitudinal study.

Difficulty recognizing negative emotions (NEs) in children is linked to increased antisocial traits and externalizing problems. However, crucial aspects of this relation remain unclear, such as: whether NE recognition is associated with externalizing problems in general or only a particular subcomponent (i.e., aggression); whether subcomponents of NE recognition (i.e., insensitivity and misspecifications) are relatively more important; and how these relations change over the course of development. We assessed emotion recognition, overt aggression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD

Symptom dimensions in obsessive-compulsive disorder as predictors of neurobiology and treatment response.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Specific symptom dimensions of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been suggested as an approach to reduce the heterogeneity of obsessive-compulsive disorder, predict treatment outcome, and relate to brain structure and function. Here, we review studies addressing these issues. RECENT FINDINGS: The contamination and symmetry/ordering dimensions have not been reliably associated with treatment outcome. Some studies found that greater severity of sexual/aggressive/religious symptoms predicted a worse outcome after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and a better outcome a

Intraindividual variability in symptoms consistently predicts sudden gains: An examination of three independent datasets.

OBJECTIVE: Sudden gains are robust predictors of outcome in psychotherapy. However, previous attempts at predicting sudden gains have yielded inconclusive findings. The aim of the present study was to examine a novel, transdiagnostic, transtherapeutic predictor of sudden gains that would replicate in different settings and populations. Specifically, we examined intraindividual variability in symptoms. METHOD: We examined data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of prolonged exposure therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents (n = 63), an RCT of cognitive

Efficacy of Imagery Rehearsal Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Sexual Assault Victims With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Sleep disturbances are common among sexual assault victims with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for PTSD does not directly address sleep-related symptoms. Trauma-related sleep disturbances are associated with more impairment and contribute to the maintenance of PTSD. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of a combination of CBT and nightmare therapy (imagery rehearsal therapy; IRT) compared to CBT alone for the treatment of PTSD. We recruited 42 adult victims of sexual assault who were suffering from PTSD and randomly assigned them to either the

Reversible dementias.

In recent years, more attention has been given to the early diagnostic evaluation of patients with dementia which is essential to identify patients with cognitive symptoms who may have treatable conditions. Guidelines suggest that all patients presenting with dementia or cognitive symptoms should be evaluated with a range of laboratory tests, and with structural brain imaging with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While many of the disorders reported as 'reversible dementias' are conditions that may well be associated with cognitive or behavioral symptoms, these sym…

Response to signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndrome: differences between Lebanese men and women.

BACKGROUND: Signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndromes differ between men and women, but whether men and women respond differently to these indications is not well understood. Such responses influence health outcomes because success of treatment depends on how quickly healthcare is sought. OBJECTIVE: To explore differences between Lebanese men and women in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndromes. METHODS: A convenience sample of 149 men and 63 women with unstable angina or acute myocardial infarction were interviewed within 72 hour

Visit rates and risk factors of healthcare-seeking behavior for urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse among women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Female pelvic floor dysfunction(FPFD), including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse, is an expanding global health problem among women, declining their quality of life. Healthcare-seeking behavior of FPFD patients plays a vital role in preventing symptom deterioration and reducing future burdens. Poor healthcare-seeking behavior has resulted in lower visit rates than prevalence. This study aimed to investigate the visit rate and risk factors of healthcare-seeking behavior in patients with FPFD and to provide a basis for developing prevention strat

Drug-responsive symptoms during early neuroleptic treatment.

Identification of symptoms that are directly responsive to neuroleptic drugs at progressive phases of treatment is important for monitoring drug response and understanding the relationship between neurochemical mechanisms of drug action and disordered behavior. Using multiple regression analyses that controlled for pretreatment severity, we identified those symptoms that improved in direct relation to serum concentrations of perphenazine after 10 days of treatment. Improvement in two positive symptoms of psychosis--hallucinations and conceptual disorganization--appears to be related to perphen

SSD-12 somatic symptom disorder scale: replication of validation and introduction of a parent version SSD-12-P.

According to DSM-5, Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) is characterized by distressing somatic symptoms with accompanying excessive thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. SSD is highly prevalent in the adult population and imposes significant clinical and societal burden. Early identification and standardized assessments are highly relevant, particularly for effective treatment. The SSD-12 is a validated self-report measure focused on the B-criteria of SSD; however, analogues parent-reported instruments for concerns about children's somatic symptoms are lacking. Moreover, independent replications of th

Cerebellar Neuromodulation in Autism Spectrum Disorders and Social Cognition: Insights from Animal and Human Studies.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social atypicalities and repetitive behaviors. Growing evidence suggests that alterations in brain networks may contribute to ASD symptoms. The cerebellum, with its widespread connections to the cortex, has emerged as a potential key player in ASD. Non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) offer a promising avenue for modulating brain activity and potentially alleviating ASD symptoms. In addition,

The prevalence and clinical correlates of body-focused repetitive behaviors in eating disorders.

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) and eating disorders (EDs) involve persistent, self-directed behaviors causing distress and impairment. Despite similarities, the relationship between the two is understudied. We examined clinical and subclinical BFRB prevalence in individuals with EDs, tested associations with ED and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, and compared BFRB occurrence between ED subtypes. The sample included 95 female adults and adolescents in residential ED treatment (51% anorexia nervosa-restricting, 37% anorexia nervosa-binge-eating/purging, 9% bulimia nervosa, 3% othe

Arachidonic acid-derived dihydroxy fatty acids in neonatal cord blood relate symptoms of autism spectrum disorders and social adaptive functioning: Hamamatsu Birth Cohort for Mothers and Children (HBC Study).

AIM: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with abnormal lipid metabolism, such as a high total ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). PUFAs are metabolized to epoxy fatty acids by cytochrome P450 (CYP); then, dihydroxy fatty acid is produced by soluble epoxide hydrolase. This study examined the association between PUFA metabolites in the cord blood and ASD symptoms and adaptive functioning in children. METHODS: This prospective cohort study utilized cord blood to quantify PUFA metabolites of the CYP pathway. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS
