BACKGROUND AND AIM: Majority of the healthcare workers (HCWs) globally have low back pain (LBP) at some point of time of their lives, resulting in activity limitation and sick leave. HCWs are exposed to the burden of long duty hours, poor posture, inadequate sleep hours, stress, etc., which ultimately leads to the occurrence of LBP. This study aimed to assess different factors influencing LBP among HCWs for early prevention and environmental modification.
METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted in a tertiary center in Eastern India. The study population was all HCWs pr

BACKGROUND: Stiff person syndrome spectrum disorders (SPSD) are a disabling group of immune-mediated disorders that most commonly cause progressive rigidity and painful spasms. Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) has anecdotally improved SPSD symptoms, though evidence regarding treatment strategy and clinical efficacy is scarce.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the location, frequency, dosage, and clinical response to BoNT injections in patients with SPSD.
DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study.
METHODS: SPSD patients who received BoNT treatments between August 2018 and February

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare genetic bone disease that is characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification of the thoracic cavity. Prognosis is poor with cardiopulmonary complications being the main cause of death. Spirometry is a well-established metric of functional exercise capacity and prognosis in lung diseases but its use is limited in this population. Accuracy and validity of spirometry is dependent on forced expiratory maneuvers which are difficult to perform for individuals with FOP. Oscillometry is an effort-independent pulmonary funct

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has emerged as an important public health concern that poses a significant threat to human health and imposes a substantial economic burden. Research has demonstrated that ubiquitin ligase-mediated substrate protein ubiquitination is a pivotal factor influencing liver lipid homeostasis and metabolic abnormalities in MAFLD. Nevertheless, the specific enzyme molecules implicated in this regulatory process remain to be elucidated. We have published a transcriptome-overexpressing ubiquitin ligase, membrane-associated ring-CH-t

OBJECTIVES: In axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), entheseal involvement is common, which contributes significantly to disease burden and may also lead to structural damage. Although radiographs of the pelvis are widely available in axSpA, information on entheseal damage and associated characteristics are lacking. Therefore, we assessed the prevalence of radiographic entheseal lesions at the pelvic region in radiographic (r-) axSpA compared with controls and explored associations with patient and disease characteristics.
METHODS: Pelvic radiographs of 167 consecutive r-axSpA patients were random

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of painful temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) has been well studied in various countries, but not in multi-ethnic Singapore where pain development, presentation, impact, and reporting may be influenced by cultural, genetic and environmental factors. This study is an initial step toward assessing the prevalence of self-reported TMD pain amongst adult Singaporeans and its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHODS: Adult participants (≥ 21 years) were randomly recruited using a two-stage stratified sampling. Data was collected in 2017 using a multilingua

BACKGROUND: The burden of obesity-related health conditions remains incompletely explored. Previous studies have been underpowered to study severe obesity, focused on a limited set of health outcomes, and lacked diversity in study populations.
METHODS: We studied 270,657 participants from the All of Us research program with linked electronic health records and body mass index (the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters) greater than or equal to 18.5. We investigated the prevalence and incidence of 16 a priori-identified outcomes covering cardiovascular-kidney-metabo

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported excellent disease control and survival in patients with well-lateralized, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC)-7 T1-2N2b tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The reduced treatment volume is associated with lower rates of physician-assessed toxicity. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have been proposed as a similarly reliable measure, but the body of literature is limited for unilaterally treated patients. Our goal was to review PROs of such patients who had reduced treatment volumes. METHODS: We reviewed PROs of patients with AJCC-7 T1-2N2b di

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are severe psychiatric conditions, with prevalence rates ranging from 5.5 to 17.9% in women and 0.6 to 2.4% in men. EDs carry a high risk of chronicity and mortality, highlighting the need for effective prevention strategies. Primary prevention can target the entire population (universal), high-risk groups (selective), or individuals with early signs (indicated). Despite substantial research, prior reviews often show limitations, such as single-author data extraction, lack of quality assessment, reliance on endpoint data, exclusion of obesity prevention progr

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms driving the progression of moyamoya disease (MMD) remain unrecognized. There is evidence suggesting that genetic and environmental factors may be associated with intracranial artery stenosis. Here, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of infectious exposure and the association of the RNF213 (RING finger protein 213) variant and infectious burden (IB) with intracranial artery stenosis of MMD.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively recruited 275 patients with MMD. Participants underwent RNF213p.R4810K sequencing. Serum antibody titers of herpes simplex virus, cy

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Historically, cholecystectomy was infrequently performed in children. Lifestyle changes, delays in health care access, and increases in childhood obesity occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of these shifts on need for cholecystectomy are poorly understood. We evaluate trends in cholecystectomy case volume among children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A multi-institutional retrospective cohort study was conducted for children ages 18 years and younger who underwent cholecystectomy from January 1, 2016, to July 31, 2022, at 10 children's hospital

Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of infectious diseases, contributing to pathogenesis and the appearance of clinical symptoms. However, the involvement of oxidative stress in renal cryptococcosis remains unknown, as do the potential protective effects of rutin. Cryptococcus neoformans is considered the main agent of cryptococcosis, a systemic life-threatening opportunistic fungal disease that affects internal organs. In 2022, the World Health Organization classified it as a critical-priority group on its Fungal Priority Pathogens List. Rutin, a flavonoid with potent

AIMS: Oesophago-gastric cancers are the fifth most common in the UK. Most patients present with advanced disease and are unsuitable for curative surgery, instead receiving palliative treatment to improve prognosis and symptom burden. Treatment resilience refers to the ability of patients to tolerate their anti-cancer treatment. Palliative chemotherapy can result in significant toxicity; almost 40% of patients are unable to complete their chemotherapy regimen, with this proportion rising significantly in older and frailer patients. Despite most cases occurring in patients over 70, older and fra

Eating disorders (EDs) are complex medical conditions that pose a considerable health burden for individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). EDs in individuals with T1DM are linked to poor metabolic control, which heightens the risk of diabetes complications. Consequently, regular screening for EDs is essential. This study investigates the prevalence of EDs in adolescents with T1DM, investigating the associations with diabetes duration, pubertal stage, glycemic control, and diabetes-related complications. In this cross-sectional study, 350 adolescents (155 males, 195 females) with T1DM,

Cigarette smoking, a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide, has increasingly been recognized as a significant and independent risk factor for the development and progression of various liver diseases. Historically, the direct impact of smoking on liver health received limited attention compared to its well-established effects on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. However, a growing body of evidence now unequivocally demonstrates that smoking negatively influences the incidence, severity, and outcomes of a wide spectrum of hepatic conditions, including metaboli
