This investigation was carried out to study allergic contraction of passively sensitized human airway smooth muscle in response to specific antigen challenge. We attempted to determine the role played by histamine, slow reaction substances (SRSs), and cyclooxygenase products in the mediation of this response in tracheal smooth muscle. From 1966 through 1978, 13 patients were treated for major bronchial disruptions due to nonpenetrating trauma. In 10 patients the diagnosis was made early, and operation was carried out in all of them. We undertook a study to demonstrate whether inhalation of atropine could inhibit cold air-induced bronchoconstriction in a dose-dependent fashion. Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed in 47 volunteers: 19 nonsmokers and 28 smokers. Total protein, albumin, immunoglobulins G and A, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were measured in the concentrated lavage effluent. Although a significant increase (p < 0.001) in the ratio of CEA to total protein recovered from the group of smokers was found, this increase primarily reflected the greater increase that occurred in a subgroup of 7 smokers.
