A total of 20 hip joints of 10 non-fixed corpses were examined within 48 h of death to measure the pressure below the inguinal ligament simulating the surgical conditions during total hip arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of various leg positions and insertion techniques of retractors during the surgical procedure for total hip replacement in order to detect supposed causes for indirect pressure injuries of the femoral nerve. The obtained results verified no increase of pressure in the inguinal canal which could explain an indirect injury of the femoral nerve.

Over 4.5 years, 32 patients with spinal epidural metastases were decompressed and stabilized. Median survival was 9.5 months. Myelopathy was the predominant indication (41%) for the operation, intractable pain (microinstability) the second most important. A series of 41 total hip arthroplasties with acetabular reinforcement by a Müller support ring is reviewed. The postoperative management was the same as that used in conventional cemented total hip arthroplasty. The overall clinical results and the radiological findings were most satisfactory after one to six years. Of the 30 hips available for functional assessment using the Merle d'Aubigné scale, 16 were excellent, 10 good, 2 fair, 1 poor and 1 bad. We evaluated twenty-one patients, one to eight years after removal of total hip-arthroplasty components because of infection. Sixteen of the patients had moderate to severe pain with either weight-bearing or sitting, and the other five had continuous moderate to severe pain. A review of 333 consecutive Charnley total hip arthroplasties four to seven years after operation showed that twenty-eight patients had died, and three deaths were directly related to the surgery. This paper reports a retrospective study of acute femoral neck fractures in 123 patients treated by primary prosthetic replacement. The average age in our patient population was 80-5 years. A Christiansen trunnion-bearing hip prosthesis (Christiansen, 1969 and 1974) was used in all patients except one. The prosthesis was cemented to the femoral shaft.
