Presumably innate and acquired automatic processes in children with attention and/or reading disorders.

Innate and acquired automatic information processing was compared in non-problem students and three groups of educationally troublesome children: two normal reading groups with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), one without and one with hyperactivity, and a non-hyperactive Reading Disabled (RD) group. All groups displayed reliable, presumably innate, automatic processing on measures of temporal and frequency sensitivity, but the two ADD groups made less precise judgements than controls. Contrasted with controls, all clinical groups exhibited delayed automatization in arithmetic computation, but

Tendon injuries about the foot and ankle in children.

Sixty-four children with tendon injuries about the foot and ankle have been reviewed in order to present a plan of management when such injuries occur. One-third involved the tendo Achillis; the others were equally distributed between the dorsum and sole of the foot, and in only 12% was more than one tendon involved. Sensory nerves were frequently severed, but nearly all recovered completely after early repair. The results of immediate repair of tendons were good. When repair was delayed the results were less satisfactory, as severe deformities developed in the growing feet. Early exploration

Electron microscopy in the early diagnosis of genetic disorders of the skin.

Electron microscopy is shown to represent an effective tool in the early diagnosis of genetic disorders. On the basis of ultrastructural findings in various dominant and recessive types of ichthyoses and epidermolyses, defects of structural proteins of the skin proved to form the main intrinsic pathogenetic feature of some dominantly inherited types whereas quantitative impairments characterize their closely resembling recessive counterparts. Most of the diseases concerned severely disable the involved patients. Early diagnosis is therefore of high importance. In those cases where an exact dia

Evaluating the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) Scores Using Principal Components Analysis.

Introduction  The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is an extensive tool used to assess children with autism and other developmental disabilities who have language delays. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) professionals frequently use the VB-MAPP to create personalized intervention programs catering to each child's needs. The lack of studies examining the VB-MAPP at the pretest, posttest, and differential scores using principal components analysis (PCA) suggests an opportunity to conduct PCAs on these different VB-MAPP scores. In doing so, researchers could be

Survey results on training in developmental disabilities in Canadian psychiatry residency programs.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health problems in children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities (DD) are an underserviced clinical area. Although the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada requires that experiences with patients with DD must be included during psychiatry residency training, the type and extent of this experience is not specified. The purpose of this study was to examine the current educational opportunities regarding DD in Canadian psychiatry residency programs. METHODS: A survey asking about training in DD was sent to psychiatry residency directors at all

Update on the current management of newborns with neonatal encephalopathy.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a subtype of neonatal encephalopathy and a major contributor to global neonatal morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in obstetric and neonatal care there are still challenges in accurate determination of etiology of neonatal encephalopathy. Thus, identification of intrapartum risk factors and comprehensive evaluation of the neonate is important to determine the etiology and severity of neonatal encephalopathy. In developed countries, therapeutic hypothermia as a standard of care therapy for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy has proven to decr

Behavioral and Psychiatric Phenotypes in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2 Deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a chromosomal microdeletion that affects approximately 40 to 50 genes and affects various organs and systems throughout the body. Detection is typically achieved by fluorescence in situ hybridization after diagnosis of one of the major features of the deletion or via chromosomal microarray or noninvasive prenatal testing. The physical phenotype can include congenital heart defects, palatal and pharyngeal anomalies, hypocalcemia/hypoparathyroidism, skeletal abnormalities, and cranial/brain anomalies, although prevalence rates of all these features are va

[Review of 22 patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: phenotype spectrum].

INTRODUCTION: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is a contiguous gene deletion syndrome with an incidence rate of 1/4,000-6,000 live births. The most specific clinical features are: congenital conotruncal heart diseases, palate anomalies, hypocalcaemia, immunity and learning problems, and a characteristic facial phenotype. The objective of this work is to review the presenting phenotype and clinical features of children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome as a guide for early diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 22 patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome diagnosed at our hospital in

[Complications of leg diaphyseal fracture in a pediatric patient: case report].

Fractures in pediatric age have a prominent role when the growth plates are involved, which represent the point of least resistance of the skeleton in children. Traumas in these regions can, therefore, cause chondroepiphysary detachments and alterations of vascularisation which can result in growth anomalies. The aim of this paper is to stress how an early diagnosis combined with a correct therapeutic approach can avoid the onset of deformations and serious disabilities. The case of a 14-year-old boy with an evident deformation and functional impotence of the ankle joint associated with a 7.5

Radial Inclination and Volar Tilt Following Ulnar Epiphysiodesis for Distal Radius Physeal Arrest.

OBJECTIVE: Physeal arrest of the distal radius is a known complication after pediatric distal radius fractures. When this occurs, ulnar epiphysiodesis has been shown to prevent further ulnar positive variance. The purpose of this study is to determine any difference in the radial inclination (RI) and volar tilt (VT) of the distal radius pre-ulnar and post-ulnar epiphysiodesis and whether the final distal radius radiographic measurements are associated with clinical outcomes. METHODS: A review of children who underwent ulnar epiphysiodesis for premature radial physeal closure at a single insti

Non-targeted immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory therapies for idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are autoimmune-mediated inflammatory disorders of skeletal muscles with non-muscle involvement in some people, which carry significant morbidity and mortality. Treatment of IIM represents an area of unmet need. This review is an update of a review previously published in 2012, as new and promising data on non-targeted treatments have emerged. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of non-targeted immunosuppressant and immunomodulatory treatments for IIM: dermatomyositis (DM, including juvenile dermatomyositis, jDM), immune-m

Early stages of pediatric bipolar disorder: retrospective analysis of a Czech inpatient sample.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30%-60% of adults diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) report onset between the ages 15 and 19 years; however, a correct diagnosis is often delayed by several years. Therefore, investigations of the early features of BD are important for adequately understanding the prodromal stages of the illness. METHODS: A complete review of the medical records of 46 children and adolescents who were hospitalized for BD at two psychiatric teaching centers in Prague, Czech Republic was performed. Frequency of BD in all inpatients, age of symptom onset, phenomenology of mood episode

Dealing with diversity-blind and visually impaired ski guiding in physical education teacher education.

A positive attitude towards diversity seems to be crucial for successful inclusion in physical education (PE). However, some previous studies point to counterproductive attitudes of PE teachers in general and towards children with blindness or visual impairments (BVI) in particular. The present study examines how a seminar focusing on BVI ski guiding influences PE teacher education (PETE) students' attitudes towards diversity. The seminar includes the experience of guiding a fellow student, who in turn experiences simulated BVI skiing. Subsequently, students have the option to participate in a

Examining the barriers and facilitators to mental health service provision for autistic people in Ireland: a survey of psychiatrists.

BACKGROUND: Autistic people have high levels of mental ill-health and an increased risk of suicide across the lifespan. Yet autistic people report difficulties communicating with healthcare professionals and accessing a range of healthcare services. At the same time, mental healthcare workers in other countries are reporting links between confidence when working with autistic patients and the degree of autism knowledge and training they can access. METHODS: We sought to examine what factors helped or hindered Irish mental healthcare colleagues when working with autistic healthcare service use

Microvillous atrophy: atypical presentations.

OBJECTIVES: Microvillous inclusion disease (MVID) is a cause of intractable diarrhea in infancy. In its classic form, the disease is characterized by a severe persistent watery diarrhea starting within the first days of life. Parenteral nutrition and small bowel transplantation are the only known treatments for the affected children. Histologically, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining shows accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff-positive staining material along the apical pole of enterocytes, whereas transmission electron microscopy exhibits microvillus inclusion bodies within the cytoplasm of e

Decompressive Craniectomy and Outcomes in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and Adolescent Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Decompressive craniectomy has been used to reduce the increased intracranial pressure (ICP) in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, recent retrospective studies showed conflicting results regarding the benefit of decompressive craniectomy in children. Owing to the gap in information, we designed a study to examine the long-term outcomes of decompressive craniectomy. METHODS: This study was performed from data obtained from the Approaches and Decisions in Acute Pediatric TBI Trial. Included in the study were all patients younger than 18 years with severe TBI

Validity and reliability of Arabic version of pediatric migraine disability assessment scale (Child Self-Report versus Parent Proxy-Report): a multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric Migraine Disability Assessment (PedMIDAS) is one of the most frequently used questionnaires to assess disability from migraine in pediatric patients. This work aimed to evaluate the validity and test-retest reliability of the Arabic version of the child self-report versus the parent proxy report PedMIDAS. We also aimed to test the agreement between children's and parents' reports of the scale. METHODS: PedMIDAS was subjected to translation and back-translation, then applied to 112 pediatric patients fulfilling the migraine diagnostic criteria. This cross-sectional study

Associations between early term and late/post term infants and development of epilepsy: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While life-long impacts exist for infants born one or two weeks early little evidence exists for those infants born after their due date. However interventions could be used to expedite birth if the risks of continuing the pregnancy are higher than intervening. It is known that the risk of epilepsy in childhood is higher in infants exposed to perinatal compromise and therefore may be useful as a proxy for intrapartum compromise. The aim of this work is to quantify the likelihood of children developing epilepsy based on their gestational age at birth (37-39 weeks or ≥41 weeks). MET
