Bile leakage test in emergency hydatid liver cyst surgery.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: In liver cyst hydatid surgery, presence of cysto-biliary communication (CBC) is important for the prevention of postoperative morbidity. If cysto-biliary connections are not obvious, diagnosis is not easy. Intraoperative bile leakage test has been shown to reduce postoperative biliary complications by revealing occult CBCs. However, bile leakage testing in emergency conditions such as hydatid cyst perforation has not been experienced so far. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, a bile leakage test performed in a 23-year-old male patient undergoing emergency surgery due to the

Cystic echinococcosis in sheep and goats of Lebanon.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a zoonotic disease caused by the species complex of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.), is endemic in Middle East and the Mediterranean basin, where pastoral activity is widespread. Despite the chronic endemicity of the disease in Lebanon and neighbouring countries, recent data are scant. The objectives of this survey were to evaluate the current epidemiology of CE in Lebanon, investigate the prevalence and determine the infecting genotypes in locally raised sheep and goats. A multidimensional approach combining post-mortem inspection of slaughtered animals a…

Following up of Surgical Treated Human Liver Cystic Echinococcosis: A Proteomics Approach.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most important parasitic zoonosis in the world. Post-surgery follow up in CE patients is an important non-solved problem up to now. Therefore, the investigations on this problematic issue would be very applicable in the view of CE clinical treatment. METHODS: A total of 24 confirmed liver CE patients sera including eight sera before surgery (BS), eight sera three months post-surgery (3MPS), and eight sera six months post-surgery (6MPS) were used in the present study. Proteomics methods including 2DE and LC-MS/MS were performed on the specim…

Rapid Growth of Hydatid Cyst: A Pediatric Case Report.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus with worldwide distribution. The most affected organs are liver and lungs, but it can be detected in any other organs as well. We reported a 5-yr-old boy from Shiraz, southern Iran in 2017 who presented with abdominal discomfort. Imaging revealed multiple liver hydatid cyst and a huge kidney hydatid cyst. This case showed the possible implication of rapid growth of multiple hydatid cyst as well as unusual organ presentation in the pediatric population.

Cystic echinococcosis: an emerging zoonosis in southern regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the principal causes of economic loss to the livestock industry because of its morbidity and mortality of food-producing animals and condemnation of important visceral organs. Pakistan being an agricultural country having an extensive livestock sector, is mostly practiced by poor people, which has a fundamental role in the economy. The present study was aimed to conduct a cross-sectional survey and PCR based confirmation of Echinococcus granulosus in sheep, goats, cows, and buffaloes from southern regions (three districts: Lakki Marwat, Bannu, a…

The Effects of Nitric Oxide and Inhibitor, and Combination of Albendazole and Praziquantel On Liver in Mice Injected with Echinococcus granulosus Larvae.

In this study, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the pathogenesis of hydatidosis and the interaction with effects of anthelmintic drugs, albendazole and praziquantel, were examined in larval infection caused by protoscolices obtained from hydatid cysts of sheep liver in Albino Balb/c mice. Animals were divided into ten groups including controls and infected groups. Larval infection was established with intraperitoneal injection of protoscolices. Eight months after infection with protoscolices, the infected animals were divided into 6 groups. The infected animals were given a selective inhibitor

Isolated renal hydatid disease: laparoscopic approach to an uncommon entity (case report).

Hydatidosis is a parasitic disease, endemic in various parts of the World. It frequently involves liver and lungs and, rarely, other organs as well. Isolated renal hydatidosis is a rare entity that accounts for less than 3% of all hydatid cases. Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment. We hereby report a case of isolated renal hydatid cyst involving left kidney that was managed by laparoscopic approach.

Metabolomic profiling of active and inactive liver cystic echinococcosis.

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is one of the life-threatening diseases worldwide. It is a parasitic zoonosis caused by tapeworms of the species Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l). The treatment options of CE vary from simple "watch and wait" approach to invasive treatment, based on the type and especially the nature of the cyst (active/inactive). Serological tests are inadequate to distinguish between active and inactive CE. A diagnostic reference that can determine whether the cyst is active or inactive can easily guide the treatment strategy. We aimed to test whether gas chromatography-mas…

Metabolic profiling of liver and faeces in mice infected with echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is a severe zoonotic parasitic disease which severely affects the health of the hosts. The diagnosis of echinococcosis depends mainly on imaging examination. However, the patient is often in the late stage of the disease when the symptoms appear, thus limiting the early diagnosis of echinococcosis. The treatment and prognosis of the patients are hampered because of long-term asymptomatic latency. Metabolomics is a new discipline developed in the late 1990s. It reflects a series of biological responses in pathophysiological processes by demonstrating the changes in me…

In vitro scolicidal effects of Sideritis perfoliata extract against Echinococcus granulosus.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis, caused by helminths within the genus Echinococcus, is mainly localised in the liver and lungs of affected hosts. Surgery has been the best choice for the treatment of hydatidosis and using effective scolicidal agents during hydatid surgery is required to prevent secondary infection. Several plant extracts have been shown to exert scolicidal efficacy. This study was designed to investigate the in vitro scolicidal activity of methanol extract of Sideritis perfoliata against the protoscolices of hydatid cysts. METHODS: The protoscolices were collected from a li…

First Report of Echinococcus ortleppi in Free-Living Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) from Portugal.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis that is prevalent worldwide. It is considered endemic in Portugal but few studies have been performed on Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato and their hosts. In this study, CE cysts are reported for the first time in a free-living wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Portugal. The presence of the metacestodes in the liver of the wild boar was identified by morphological features, microscopic examination and molecular analysis. The sequencing of part of the DNA nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS-1) region revealed a G5 genotype that presently corre…

Demographics of Cystic Echinococcosis Patients Treated Surgically in Lahore, Pakistan: A Single Centre Study from 2007 - 2018.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus tapeworms. These parasites have a worldwide geographic distribution and pose a serious threat to livestock industry as well as human health in the endemic areas. CE is widely distributed in Pakistan. However, very few reports are available related to the regional transmission of E. granulosus. A retrospective analysis was conducted of surgically confirmed CE patients who were treated at Shoukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore, Punjab Province, Pakistan from 2007 …

Cell-free DNA as a diagnostic tool for human echinococcosis.

Echinococcosis is a major public health problem and an emerging/re-emerging disease. It was proposed that Echinococcus cell-free DNA (cfDNA) could be used in diagnosing human echinococcosis, though earlier attempts failed. Here, we update the research on detecting Echinococcus cfDNA in echinococcosis patients' samples and highlight future research directions.

Genetic diversity of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto infecting humans in western Algeria.

Human cystic echinococcosis is a zoonosis due to the flat worm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The disease remains a major public health problem in Northern Africa. Molecular typing enables a better understanding of the parasite circulation from animals to humans. In this study, we investigated the genotypic diversity of 46 Echinococcus granulosus isolates collected from humans in the western part of Algeria by the mean of partial sequences of 4 mitochondrial loci, namely cox1a, cox1b, nd3, and atp6. Nucleotide polymorphism ranges from 0.6 (nd3) to 2.7% (cox1a). Eight alleles had not been …

Albendazole Nanocrystal-Based Dissolving Microneedles with Improved Pharmacokinetic Performance for Enhanced Treatment of Cystic Echinococcosis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis caused by Echinococcus spp., affecting both humans and animals' lives. Current treatment of CE by oral administration of albendazole (ABZ) is hampered by several limitations. The poor aqueous solubility and the rapid metabolism of ABZ in the liver are the main issues, leading to lack of efficacy of the treatment. In the present study, we developed a nanocrystalline (NC) formulation of ABZ to be delivered intradermally using dissolving microneedles (DMNs). The NC formulation was developed using milling in an ultrasmall-scale device. Following several scr…
