The influence of emotional context on cognitive operations is of fundamental importance for the evolution of higher cognitive functions and their disturbance in neuropsychiatric disorders. The dopamine pathways projecting to prefrontal cortex and the basal ganglia are assumed to play a major role in such emotion-cognition interactions. Here we provide evidence for such a role by studying working memory for emotional faces in patients with Parkinson's Disease. We studied 25 patients with Parkinson's disease during their on and off medication states. Faces with emotional expressions (happy, angr

Attentional biases to threat are considered central to anxiety disorders, however physiological evidence of their nature and time course is lacking. Event-related potentials (ERPs) characterized sensory and cognitive changes while 20 outpatients with panic disorder (PD), 20 with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and 20 healthy controls (HCs) responded to the color (emotional Stroop task) or meaning of threatening and neutral stimuli. ERPs indicated larger P1 amplitude and longer N1 latency in OCD, and shorter P1 latency in PD, to threatening (versus neutral) stimuli, across instructions to

The so-called obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder (OCD spectrum) is represented by a large variety of clinical entities. There are in general obsessive-compulsive disorder, trichotillomania or Gilles de la Tourette disease among the impulse control disorders, body dysmorphic disorder and hypochondriasis among the somatoform disorders. Updated overview of the OCD spectrum through a bipolar configuration with the impulsion-compulsion (I-C) spectrum, characterized by a failure to resist and control intrusive thoughts associated with repetitive behaviors that seem to be uncontrollable or requir

Anxiety disorders are common disorders in childhood, and developmental differences must be considered when diagnosing and treating patients in this age group. Recent research has illuminated the course of childhood anxiety disorders, including how they can be precursors to continued anxiety and mood problems in adulthood. Recent studies of cognitive-behavioral therapy, the first-line psychosocial treatment for childhood anxiety, have focused on the following issues: the relative efficacy of group versus individual cognitive-behavioral therapy; the role of parent involvement; and the applicatio

Overvaluation of shape and weight in binge-eating disorder (BED) is associated with greater eating-disorder psychopathology and greater weight-bias internalization, which are-in turn-associated with poorer mental and physical health. Little is known, however, about the significance of other cognitive processes, such as rumination, in BED. This study examined rumination and overvaluation of shape/weight with eating-disorder psychopathology and weight-bias internalization among 237 treatment-seeking patients with BED and comorbid obesity. Hierarchical multiple regressions indicated that ruminati

OBJECTIVE: Although several treatments for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders are available, there are few well-controlled studies in the literature that compare these treatments for efficacy. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of controlled treatment studies for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders.
METHOD: The research literature on controlled treatment studies of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents was systematically reviewed through a search of PsycINFO and Medline. Studies that did not compare the efficacy of treatment modalities were

The psychopathology of stroke encompasses several psychiatric and behavioral disorders that have high prevalence in the geriatric population, reduce the patient autonomy and increase the caregiver's burden. These disorders are usually associated with other cognitive and neurological deficits, and are labelled as neuropsychiatric when the whole clinical picture is consistent with the specific dysfunction of a neural system or brain region. Thus the neuropsychiatry of stroke comprises disorders of the perception/identification of the self and the environment (anosognosia of hemiplegia, misidenti

Objective: To identify self-reported sleep-wake disturbances that increase the risk of cognitive decline over 1-year follow-up in frail participants. Background: Risk factors for cognitive impairment need to be better identified especially at earliest stages of the pathogenesis. Sleep-wake disturbances may be critical factors to consider and were thus being assessed in this at-risk population for cognitive decline. Methods: Frail elderly participants aged ≥70 years were selected from a subsample of the Multi-domain Alzheimer Preventive Trial (MAPT) for a sleep assessment (MAPT-sleep study) at

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a globally prevalent public health disorder following rapid population aging. Although depression can trigger cognitive decline, few studies have focused on how anxiety and its comorbidity with depression can affect cognitive decline development. METHODS: Cognitive impairment was recognized based on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), while dementia was diagnosed with self-/proxy-reported evaluations. The 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) were employed for evalu

AIM: To investigate associations between cognitive status and retinal parameters in older adults.
METHODS: The population-based Beichen Eye Study (BCES) recruited 5840 older adults from Tianjin, China. Retinal thickness and vessel density (VD) were measured using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT/OCTA). Cognitive function was assessed via the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Participants with gradable images and valid MMSE scores (n = 3606) were analyzed.
RESULTS: Cognitive impairment (CI) was identified in 32.7% of participants. Compared to non-CI individuals, those with CI

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic widespread pain disorder associated with fatigue, tender points, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders. Symptoms associated with FM also include decreased cognitive function in which the neural basis is poorly understood. Neuroendocrine hormones may be correlated with cognitive performance under some ill conditions. However, we are unaware of current evidence on neuroendocrine hormones as factors influencing cognitive function in adults with FM.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess whether neuroendocrine hormones could affect cognition in

With the development of generative artificial intelligence (AI), human-computer interaction has shifted from a primarily instrumental function to a more human-like symbiotic relationship. However, current research on digital addiction (DA) remains limited to the compulsive consumption characteristic of the Web 2.0 era and does not adequately address the new pathological features emerging with AI. This study uses a narrative review method to systematically trace the evolution from internet addiction disorder to smartphone addiction, and subsequently to AI addiction. Research indicates that DA h

Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by a child's persistent inability to communicate verbally in some or all contexts of social life. It is often associated with other cognitive-affective disorders. Performing cognitive-behavioral assessments and psychological interventions can be challenging due to the difficulty in administering standardized neuropsychological tests and involving family and teachers in the intervention program. In a single case study, a young Filipina girl with SM underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and received multimodal t

BACKGROUND: Caring for a young person with anorexia nervosa (AN) has been associated with psychological distress and found to be a traumatic experience. This can have an impact on patient and family outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether self-blame cognitions contribute to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in parents of young people with AN.
METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used. One hundred and twenty-three parents of young people with AN completed a range of questionnaires assessing self-blame cognitions and PTSD symptoms.
RESULTS: Overall, levels o

The amygdala is critically involved in emotional processing, including fear responses, and shows hyperactivity in anxiety disorders. Previous research in healthy participants has indicated that amygdala activity is down-regulated by cognitively demanding tasks that engage the PFC. It is unknown, however, if such an acute down-regulation of amygdala activity might correlate with reduced fear in anxious participants. In an fMRI study of 43 participants (11 men) with fear of snakes, we found reduced amygdala activity when visual stimuli were processed under high cognitive load, irrespective of wh

Cognitive models of anxiety and panic suggest that symptom reduction during treatment should be preceded by changes in cognitive processing, including modifying the anxious schema. The current study tested these hypotheses by using a repeated measures design to evaluate whether the trajectory of change in automatic panic associations over a 12-week course of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is related to the trajectory of change in panic symptoms. Individuals with panic disorder (N = 43) completed a measure of automatic panic associations--the Implicit Association Test (A. G. Greenwald, D. E.

In vivo functional brain imaging provides an opportunity to quantify and localize functional deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), in relation to dementia severity and heterogeneous cognitive profiles. Such imaging also provides a basis for distinguishing AD from other causes of dementia and for making an early diagnosis of disease. One imaging modality that can elucidate AD is positron emission tomography (PET), which is used to measure regional cerebral metabolic rates for glucose (rCMRglc) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Resting-state measurements with PET, when relate

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to offer a comprehensive, data-based explanation of the relationship between hyperventilation and panic disorder linking CO2 hypersensitivity, cognitive/behavioral factors, and the respiratory effects of antipanic pharmacologic and psychological treatments.
METHOD: The authors conducted a computerized search of MEDLINE for relevant articles.
RESULTS: Some panic patients have a chronic, subtle respiratory disturbance. Acute hyperventilation is neither necessary nor sufficient for panic to occur. Respiratory abnormalities in panic patients may adaptive
