Molecular epidemiology of Hepatitis E virus among humans in the Niger Republic, 2017-2023.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis, responsible for large outbreaks in resource limited countries. The virus belongs to the genus Orthohepevirus which is subdivided into eight distinct genotypes (HEV-1 to HEV-8). Human disease transmission is mostly through the faecal-oral route. However, zoonotic transmission could also occur. In the Niger Republic, the first documented HEV outbreak was recorded in 2017 around displaced persons camps in the Diffa region across the Lake Chad basin, resulting in 736 confirmed cases and 38 (1.9%) deaths. Since then, sporadi

Cholera in Sub-Saharan Africa: Unveiling neglected drivers and pathways to elimination.

Cholera is a virulent infectious disease caused by the Gram-negative, comma-shaped bacteria Vibrio cholerae, after ingesting contaminated food and/or water. If left untreated, it can kill within 5 days. Since mid-2021 the world has recorded a notable increase in the seventh cholera pandemic, with high case fatality rate especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Oral cholera vaccines are established but not readily available on the market, or if they are, they are not pocket friendly for low-resource-income countries. Hence, with the advent of green factory biotechnology, plant-derived edible vaccines

Significant challenges to the sustainability of the California coast considering climate change.

Climate change is an existential threat to the environmental and socioeconomic sustainability of the coastal zone and impacts will be complex and widespread. Evidence from California and across the United States shows that climate change is impacting coastal communities and challenging managers with a plethora of stressors already present. Widespread action could be taken that would sustain California's coastal ecosystems and communities. In this perspective, we highlight the main threat to coastal sustainability: the compound effects of episodic events amplified with ongoing climate change, w

Exploring Nonspecialist Preparedness to Deliver an Evidence-Based, Family Strengthening Intervention in Rwanda: A Qualitative Study.

Families in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face significant mental health and psychosocial care gaps. In recent years, researchers and practitioners have addressed these gaps by task-sharing evidence-based mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) interventions to nonspecialist community providers. Supervision and training approaches are intended to prepare nonspecialists to deliver evidence-based interventions with quality. However, there is still little research exploring nonspecialist experiences with training and supervision and how, if at all, their training and supervision

Neglected tropical disease meets neglected community: Street children's susceptibility to scabies in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Scabies is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) with high prevalence rate in resource-limited settings. Though street children are susceptible because of lack of sanitation and contact with vectors, few attempts have been made to identify the lived experience of street children with scabies in the global south. This study explored perceived susceptibility to scabies and related lived experiences of street children in Addis Ababa. Using in-depth interviews, we collected qualitative data from selected children of the street to identify their understanding of the causes of scabies, their experience

A panel of diverse Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates for research and development.

Klebsiella pneumoniae are a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections worldwide. In particular, strains expressing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases pose serious treatment challenges, leading the World Health Organization (WHO) to designate ESBL and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae as 'critical' threats to human health. Research efforts to combat these pathogens can be supported by accessibility to diverse and clinically relevant isolates for testing novel therapeutics. Here, we describe a panel of 100 diverse K. pneumoniae isolates that are publicly avai

Information, involvement, self-care and support-The needs of caregivers of people with stroke: A grounded theory approach.

BACKGROUND: Globally, stroke is a leading cause of death and disability, with most care undertaken by caregivers who are generally family and friends without prior experience of care. The lack of experience or unpreparedness results in feelings of uncertainty, burnout, anxiety, burden, etc. Hence, it is necessary to identify the needs of caregivers to better support them in their caregiving journey and improve the quality of care delivered. METHODS: The study employed a grounded theory methodology that utilizes information gathered from literature reviews and social media to represent the nee

Faculty development for strengthening online teaching capability: a mixed-methods study of what staff want, evaluated with Kirkpatrick's model of teaching effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Globally, tertiary teachers are increasingly being pushed and pulled into online teaching. While most developments in online education have focused on the student perspective, few studies have reported faculty development (FD) initiatives for increasing online teaching capability and confidence from a staff perspective. METHODS: We designed and evaluated FD workshops, using five datasets, and the use of H5P software for interactive online teaching. We used educational theory to design our FD (Mayer multimedia principles, active learning) and evaluated our FD initiatives using the

Psychological, social, and sexual challenges affecting men receiving male infertility treatment: a systematic review and implications for clinical care.

In recent years, social research surrounding the consequences of infertility has increasingly focused on the male perspective; however, a gap exists in the understanding of men's experiences of male infertility treatment. This review aims to synthesize the existing evidence concerning the psychological, social, and sexual burden of male infertility treatment on men, as well as patient needs during clinical care. A systematic search identified 12 studies that are diverse in design, setting, and methods. Psychological evaluations have found that urological surgery may have a lasting impact on in

Trauma, risk, and resilience: A qualitative study of mental health in post-conflict Liberia.

The Liberian civil wars led to widespread destruction and devastation for its individuals, communities, and economy. However, individuals' subjective trauma experiences and long-term psychological impact remain relatively understudied. This study aims to explore context-specific traumatic events and examine how risk and protective factors combine with traumas to influence trajectories of suffering and recovery over time. We conducted 43 semi-structured interviews with Liberian adults who were present during the Liberian civil wars, and we used line-by-line open coding, thematic analysis, and a
